A game designer needs thorough understanding of game play theory, strong storytelling and communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. There is no single path to become a game designer, but it is typically not an entry-level role. Common routes include starting as a game tester to gain experience with the development process and access to software and tools. As a game designer, duties include training testers to evaluate games based on expectations for the finished product.
