Winter's revenge
G324 coursework by Chloe Kiely
1. In what ways does your
media product use, develop
or challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products
Initial Stages
 At the start of my product, I couldn’t decide whether to create a film
trailer with the genre of horror or comedy or romance. This is due to the
fact that I had loads of ideas as I enjoy all these genres so I knew creating
a storyline would be quite fun and I would be able to use influences from
different real films.
 After completing more research into each of the three genres and the
conventions, I decided to create a horror/thriller film trailer. I pitched
my idea to a group which was generally received well but I did make
some minor changes to the plot line as it was supposed to be a
grandfather who died but I came to the challenge that I had no cast
member to play a grandfather so I changed it to a sister.
 The plot revolves around a teenage boy gets muddled up in a gang but
escapes that life. The gang want him back but he refuses so they murder
his little sister as she is the only one he cares about. Thus the main
character goes crazy and murders the gang.
Genre Conventions
 At the beginning of the project, I completed research into my three favourite
film genres: Horror, romance and comedy.
 Horror Genre: https://chloekielya2.blogspot.co.uk/2017/09/research-into-
similar-products-genre.html
 Comedy Genre: https://chloekielya2.blogspot.co.uk/2017/09/research-into-
similar-products-genre_19.html
 Romance Genre: https://chloekielya2.blogspot.co.uk/2017/09/research-into-
similar-products-genre_17.html
 I went on to decide that I wanted to do a horror themed film trailer because
to me i felt like i could create suspense and mystery which is what i pike in a
horror film. I also knew the perefect place to film parts of a horror film such
as the lickey hills near me as they can seem wuite creepy dhe to the forest
and woodland. I analysed several films with similar plotlines such as 'A
Nightmare On Elm Street' and 'IT’. Both films include a serial killer of kinds
going after kids. Similarly, my plotline is a boy going after people his own age
and killing them due to the fact that they killed his little sister.
Film Trailer Development
 I started my trailer
through a long shot with
tracking showing the
brother and sister Logan
and Robyn to have a close
normal sibling
relationship which
suggests nothing out of
the ordinary is going to
happen. This is used as
backstory for the
audience as they begin to
understand how close the
two are and so why Logan
goes crazy after Robyn is
murdered as a message
for him.
Film Trailer Develoment
 I then went on to use
an over the shoulder
shot of Logan putting
up posters of the four
main gang leaders and
the times he wishes to
kill them at.
Film Trailer Development
 Towards the end of the
trailer, in scene five, I used
a series of fast paced
editing of gang members
Caitlyn and Charlie running
away from Logan. This
editing technique was used
to highlight how scared the
gang members were and
emphasis the tension and
mystery for the audience.
Film Trailer Development
 The last scene of my trailer
includes a close up of an
alarm clock ringing which
was used to signify that
someone was dead. The
time is just after nine so 9
is quite a significant time
as both clocks on the
ancillary show this time.
The close up also
emphasises how important
the clock is in the film
trailer.
Film Trailer
Development
 Intertitles were useed throughout my film trailer to
create suspension between each scene to a build-up
of a gang member dying in scene 5. The intertitles I
used were quite simplistic as to give away very
little which makes the audience want to know
more.
 Intertitles: https://chloekielya2.blogspot.co.uk/20
18/04/drafting-and-planning-intertitles.html
 Fpurthermore, i used the colours black andwhite to
continue the theme of the colours red, black and
white that i have used throughout all three
elements of the project to show a sense of cohesion
and branding. Those colours also highlight the
horror genre theme of the film trailer as it
represents a spooky and mysterious setting.
Film Poster
Influences
 I firstly researched fferent horror film posters
such as mama, The forcreared nightmare on
elm street etc to find out different codes and
conventions of a horror film poster. I found
out that most use an antaganist as the main
cover image and most horror films use dark or
unusual lighting. I decided straightaway that i
wanted to incorporste
 I created two mock up film posters using two
different film posters as influence. I created
the first one of the main chzrscter leaning
against the tree with influence from the forsr
film poster as in this fiom poster the black
and white background and familiar scene lof
the background. Although in The forest film
poster the person is only small whereas the
poster i creared shows the main charscter as
the focus of the backgroynd. For the second
film poster i created (the one i actually used
for my ancillary prpductp) used influence
from the nightmare on elm street poster aqs
it focuses pn the main charscter like i did in
the poster. The poster also emphasises the
knives as fingers likes my poster emohasises
the importancs of the clock.
 Poster analysis:

Film Poster Development
I started by taking several different photos of Logan using
different shots and angles. I liked this medium shot of
Logan looking down at the clock the best. By looking down
it shows that he is quite a closed character and also by
looking at the clock it shows how important The clock is as
it symbolises Robyn's death.
After taking photos of my main character Logan, I decided
that I wanted to Make the image look more creepy and
mysterious so I tried three different filters: Black and
white (to highlight the horror theme and show cohesion
between the magazine and film trailer), Red (to emphasis
the blood and gore supposedly in the film and go with the
colour scheme of all three elements of the project) and
sepia (to make it stand out). I Chose the sepia filter as it
made it stand out more and create more mystery.
After creating both magazines, I asked my potential target
audience for their thoughts on which magazine they
preferred.
http://chloekielya2.blogspot.co.uk/2018/03/drafting-and-
planning-feedback-for-both.html?m=1
Magazine Development
 I started by looking into several different magazine
companies such as 'Horrorville' and 'Empire' to look at
the different codes and conventions for film
magazine. I knew most of these from my progression
from AS where I had to create a music magazine.
ch-into-similar-products.html
 I then decided on the magazine empire as I could use
a red masthead to go with the colour theme that I
had running throughout all the other elements.
 I then looked into an empire magazine of 'The
Hunger Games' and used this magazine as an
influence for my own magazine.
ch-into-similar-products-film.html
 I then used the codes and conventions from this
magazine to influence the choices I made for my
magazine (including cover lines, anchorage text, pug
and a cover line at the bottom of the magazine).
2. How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary
texts?
Character Representations
 There is a clear consistency between the film trailer and the two ancillaries
as the main focus of both is the main protagonist Logan. Due to the fact that
the whole narrative of the film trailer revolves around Logan, he is the sole
focus in both ancillaries. This shows a cohesion between all three products.
Both photos are done in dark low key lighting to show that he is evil.
 Characterisation of main character:
https://chloekielya2.blogspot.co.uk/2017/12/organisation-
characterisation.html
 In the trailer, it is made clear that Logan is close to his to sister (especially in
scene 1) so when she is killed, he goes crazy and closed as he holds on to
something that was with Robyn at her death (the clock) which is why in both
ancillaries he is looking at it rather than the audience.
Mise en scene
 Colour scheme – I used a consistent theme of black,
red and white throughout both my ancillary
products: these colours are all significant in
connotating horror films. These colours also stand t
against the black background and sepia colour of
the film poster and magazine. I also used the white
and black for my intertitles in my film trailer.
 Props – The main prop used throughout all three
elements is the clock. This shows that the clock is
important to the main character as it was by sister
at her death. Another prop used in most horror
films is a weapon. In one scene (scene 5) a knife is
used by the main character. This highlights the
genre of the film.
Applying Theory
 Due to audiences nowadays being an active audience, there I absolutely no
way that an audience member would copy any action that is in the film
because they know it is all fiction.
 Linking to the Uses and gratification theory, this focuses on how and why the
media is being used and consumed by audiences. For my film trailer, the
audiences will use the film for entertainment purposes only as the horror
genre is mainly used for escapism purposes only.
3. What have you
learned from your
audience feedback?
Audience Feedback – Pitch
 Throughout the whole process of making my trailer and two ancillary
products, I was constantly getting feedback from my teachers and my
potential target audience so I could see their opinions on how to move
forward through my products
 In the early stages of my project, I had to think about the genre, narrative
and age certification of my film so after lots of thinking I came up with my
idea about a serial killer. At first I didn't realise how flawed my film idea was
due to location and casting issue so I pitched my idea to a group of peers ad
through this they gave me question to consider when progressing with my
project
 ps://chloekielya2.blogspot.co.uk/2017/11/drafting-and-planning-pitch-
feedback.html
Audience feedback –
titles and film trailer
 My next problem that I faced was I couldn't decide
what name to give my film that conveyed the
horror genre and went along with my narrative of
my film. I came up with lots of different ideas and
asked my potential target audience to decide and
the majority liked the name 'Midnight Tolls'.
However with extra consideration I decided
against this name as it didn’t exactly fit the
narrative so I decided the name 'Winters Revenge'
ting-and-planning-film-titles_24.html
 Furthermore after editing each scene, I asked for
peoples thoughts both positive and negative on the
scenes. I used these thoughts to then change the
editing for the final
Audience Feedback - Posters
 I came up with two completely different film posters for my film trailer (a
billboard and a poster). I used audience feedback to help me decide which
film trailer was the best and would fit the genre the best by showing cohesion
between all three elements of the project.
feedback-for-both.html
4. How did you use media
technologies in the
construction and research,
planning and evaluation?
Blogger
 Blogger was a useful tool to help show my development throughout my trailer
and ancillaries. AS well as keep up to date evidence of my research into
similar products, drafting and planning, research into a target audience and
organisation. This website also allowed me to use media tools like using
embedded videos and photos.
 I could also keep everything organised by labelling things in the four main
areas so I knew what I had done and what needed to be done. The archive
tool also allowed my work to be ordered chronically of all my previous blog
posts which meant I could navigate through my own work easily.
https://chloekielya2.blogspot.co.uk/
Movie Plus and Page Plus
 As part of my preliminary task, I had to re-edit a short film so I got used to
the tools and how to work with serif movie plus so I was familiar with the
programme before I worked on my actual project.
 I also used page plus for my poster and magazine as I already knew how to use
this programme as I used it for my AS project.
 Page plus allowed me to manipulate different images using the photo studio
and cut out studio. This was an essential tool for my film poster mainly. I also
used paint.net to cut out the image of Logan for my film magazine
Social Media
 For my research into a potential target audience, I used social media to
contact with people as it is an easy to access and is quite popular with my
target audience.
 I used snapchat, instagram and facebook messenger etc.
 Snapchat was the easiest to use because I could send images and videos easily
and get instant replies. The app is also very popular so I could get a large
range of people's opinions
Power point and slide share
 For my evaluation, I used power point so I could use photos, hyperlinks and
screenshots of my main product and two ancillaries. I was very comfortable
using this programme as I had used this to make loads of presentations
previously. I also could use different templates that could be manipulated to
fit the same theme as my blog.
 I then uploaded the presentation to slideshare which was easy and I was
familiar to as I had used this before. I did this because it is an easy way of
uploading a power point to blogger and making sure each hyperlink works.
