The document provides responses to questions about the student's media product evaluation. In response to question 1, the student summarizes how they used conventions from real music magazines like Q and NME in their magazine, such as cover lines, masthead placement, and image selection. They also challenged conventions by using bolder colors and fonts. For question 2, they represented late teens and adults interested in music through relaxed, stylish artist images. Bauer Media was selected as the distributor for question 3 since it distributes similar magazines nationwide. The target audience of 15-25 year olds who like music was addressed for question 4.

In what was does you media product use,
develop and challenge forms and
conventions of a real media product
4. Q1 In what was does you media product use, develop and
challenge forms and conventions of a real media product
• Throughout the magazine process my aim was to include as many codes and conventions
from real magazine. So therefore I decided to analyse mainstream music magazines such as Q
and NME which contained the codes and conventions

•
• After viewing the magazines and naming the codes and
conventions of the mainstream magazines, I then applied these
to some made up front covers
http://ellisratchfordblogs.blogspot.com/2016/11/layout-exercise-25.html
•
• I feel this exercise helped me in understanding how to place the
supporting cover lines as I was able to see the mistakes I made
and how to improve them and I feel you can see that in the
progress from my work back then to my final product
5. Q1 In what was does you media product use, develop and challenge forms
and conventions of a real media product
Since learning about all the codes and convention I then decided to add them
to my own work. When creating my magazine I had to take many things into
consideration, but most importantly the rules that applies, when
using the codes and conventions
My masthead took up the left third and the middle. I felt I wanted
the masthead to be visible so I made it bigger and I put it in blue
which was one of the main colours I stuck with throughout.
I made sure to put my cover lines in white so it could standout
against the white background. I also felt that the white with the
bold over the names of who the cover line was about would help
catch a consumers eye
The main cover line was in a different font to the cover lines this
was to show that there was a clear different between the main
cover line and the rest of the cover line. I felt I accomplished this
as all cover lines besides the main one consisted of the same font
whereas the size of the main cover line was big one. I feel the
main story is easily highlighted and people would want to read it
due to its importance
6. Q1 In what was does you media product use, develop and challenge forms
and conventions of a real media product
My Influences
my initial influences came from looking at artists and genres that I like and looking at the artists
that would be on those front covers. I liked the real laid back element of the front cover as it
shows the relaxed pop music.
When I looked at the relaxed pop idea I came across this Q Ed Sheeran
front cover. I was inspired to add some of the elements from this front
cover, for example the, “Essential 50 albums of 2016” I liked the idea of
having something on the side of the magazine like that. So I decided to
replicate this as I felt it was a good idea to have in the magazine
With my front cover image I had an idea of being dead on with the
camera, so looking into the audiences eye would create an immediate
connection. I was more influence by a Jack Garrett image off the
internet instead
7. Q1 In what was does you media product use, develop and challenge forms and
conventions of a real media product
This Q magazine continued to
solidify my ideas of placing the 50
albums on my front cover. Also the
white font for the colour lines
where very effective and I had that
running throughout my entire
magazine
This NME magazine showed me that
despite the Masthead is one colour
the rest of the magazine doesn't
have to follow the same pathway.
But also the Masthead is bold and
stands out which I tried to translate
onto my magazine
This NME gave me the
idea of the bold font over
the cover line names
which I used on all of my
cover lines. Furthermore
this gave me the idea to
have a simplistic front
cover as it is very effective
8. Q1 In what was does you media product use, develop and challenge forms and
conventions of a real media product
For my contents page I stayed
simplistic with a white
background and I used a blue
font on all the features due to it
following the studio blue colour
scheme. This was also
highlighted so it was clear to the
consumer
On the contents page to the left I found it
was simplistic and it felt easy to read. In my
opinion the consumer would find this easy
to read. It also helped me with the idea of
making the “contents” clearly visible and I
feel I accomplished that. The contents page
to the right showed me that I should make
it clear that my pictures are with the
correct feature
9. Q1 In what was does you media product use, develop and challenge forms and
conventions of a real media product
My first influence was this as I felt the star had to be the
main and key element about the article as that’s what
consumers what to see. As that’s why they buy the
magazine
I decided that I wanted to stay simple with my approach
and have the artist clearly visible. So I did so by having
my star in his own place with only a quote to support
him
10. Q1 In what was does you media product use, develop and challenge forms and
conventions of a real media product
I love the casual layout of my double page spread. I feel it looks very relaxed and it
would be more enticing to read with that. I wanted to make it all about the artist so I
stuck to the white font colour. This was effective as I feel you are forced to focus on
the writing.
I am a fan of the simplistic approach I have taken as it sticks to the genre of relaxed
pop. The lack of colour makes you focus on the article which I think is pivotal as that
was what I wanted. Also the black and white compliment each other, overall it all
compliments each other
12. Q2 How does you media group represent particular social groups
My magazine is focused for late teens and adults, who are interested in not only the
latest music but also the industry. I felt Q magazine was a real driving force in showing
me the pop side to my magazine giving me the inspiration that I felt I needed. Also
NME helped give me the relaxed edge that I wanted
I tried to make my artist have a relaxed style to them or a more stylistic approach to them. I
did this because that was what I wanted to follow through out the entire of my magazine.
However with Louis I wanted it to come across that he was about the music. Yet he had a
stylistic approach. So he was a even balance between having the pop music edge, but also he
comes across as relaxed.
13. Q2 How does you media group represent particular social groups
My secondary images that you see in the contents
page continues to give a very relaxed image with
Chloe (top picture). Whereas in the bottom picture
there is more of a pop vibe that is being given off by
the sense of attitude portrayed. I went with a all
boy group due to the success of One Direction I
wanted to try and replicate that through “The
Division”. I felt the light makes them stand out
against the black background giving Chloe the
vulnerability factor and youth which many would
find is appealing. Whereas for “The division it makes
them seem appealing because they look like the
stars
14. Question 3
• What kind of media of media institutions
might distribute your media product and why
15. Q3 Media Institutions
I have chosen the distributer of “Bauer Media group”
https://www.bauermedia.co.uk/
I have chosen this distributer because it also distributes main stream
magazines such as Q NME and Kerrang They also use many forms of media
such as websites smart phones and TV which would mean my magazine
would make it to a nationwide audience.
17. Q4 Who would be the audience for your media product
My magazine is aimed for boys and girls from ages 15-25; teenagers and adults that
like and enjoy music. I also asked fellow students if they felt this would be a good
target audience for my genre. Some of the responses included, “this is a perfect age
range” and “I completely agree”
I feel Q has the same target audience as I do and in my
remake remodel task I was able to show this as I used
influences from Q magazine with the attitude that they show
on front covers.
Qs target audience covers my target age range
so I used there general appearance. They
always have some variation of attitude which I
showed
19. Q5 How did you attract/address your audience
Studio
Masthead
I wanted the name of my magazine to be easy and quick to
say. I also wanted it to big so it would stand out and easier
to see in shop. I feel like if you hear studio it comes with the
connotation of music so I thought that was a bonus. It is very
straight to the point and you could say very professional. I
didn’t want to be generic and go with something such as red
which would follow Q and NME but instead making it blue
would make it stand out amongst other magazines.
Colour
When deciding my colour scheme I wanted to stay with a
boldness to make the entire magazine but also add a sense
of simplicity. When looking at my magazine I feel that the
colours I chose work very well together as they are blended
well together. The blue was what I wanted to focus on as you
don’t see music magazines where blue is the main colour, it
gave the unique aspect to the magazine.
20. Q5 How did you attract/address your audience
Images
The image I used on my front cover showed my artist to
be very confident. I showed him to be very sophisticated,
with attitude. I went with darker colours for him to show
that there is another side to him. The message I wanted to
give across was more to younger audiences, that it was
okay to be confident.
Cover Lines
I used words such as “Top” to give the magazine a sense of exclusivity. Which would make
a consumer to find out more and to buy it. My aim was to keep the cover lines away from
the man one so they stand out on there own and there's more then one place to look. I
kept the language simple to try and create an even balance of which the younger audience
would understand as well a try and give an audience what they want. My main cover line I
feel would aimed at everyone but then to potentially draw in an older audience back in I
talk about the studio as my top cover line says “working on new material” I believe that is
what an older audience looks for.
21. Question 6

23. Q6 What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the
product
Page Plus Publisher Paint.Net
The effects you can add
come across as
unprofessional on the
photo
Basic tools so you wasn’t
able to make the magazine
look professional
compared to a real
magazine
Not as good as the likes of
photoshop
Limited number of shapes
meaning you'd have to use
a different program
Lack of tool means would
be swapping between
programs
Might not be the easiest
for people to pick up if
your not used to this type
of software
Limited choice on shapes Trying to uses tools like the
magic want could be
inaccurate
Weaknesses of the technology
24. Q6 What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the
product
When making my magazine I had a draft which had a different ways of which I would
lay out my work with the different styles of pictures I took and here is my first draft.
With my image that I used in my draft I didn’t have an issue with as it gave the image I
wanted to show. I didn’t feel a need to add any effects I just made the picture bigger so he
could stand out more.
25. Q6 What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the
product
Blogger
I found that using blogger was easy. It mad the magazine journey stress free. Posting
blogs was simple and uploading my work wasn’t made to feel like a chore but instead
it was a quick and also effective way of uploading. Due to it being online I am able to
see other peoples progress and compare and get ideas for my own work. It is also
connected to one account so that means its all under one area
26. Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task what do
you feel you have learnt in the progression from
it to the final product
27. Q7 Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the final product
Preliminary task
Main final task
In my preliminary task I didn’t even put cover lines, making it not seem like a realistic
front cover at all and also didn’t feature any of the codes and conventions of a real
magazine whereas my final task. I have put a barcode. A date
28. Q7 looking at the preliminary task
For the little to no experience I had i feel the preliminary task was quite good, but as
you can tell there where are a lot of improvements to be made and they are obvious.
My final piece is far more professional as there is much more content and there are a
significant amount more codes and conventions in my final piece. I would feel very
happy and pleased to place this on a magazine shelf with the way it turned out.
29. Question 8
• How successful do you feel your end product
is in fulfilling the task? How well does this fit
the brief
30. Q8 How well does it fit the brief
Overall I am very happy with the final result of my magazine. I believe that it fits the
brief very well. I added many codes and conventions of the stereotypical magazine.
Furthermore I also tried to challenge some of the stereotypical features of a music
magazine. Through researching music magazines in the earlier stages of making this
magazine I found out what applied to my target audience 15/25 year olds. I
experimented with many of the programs and also photos to make a pop music
magazine.
