Editor's Notes
The viewpoint from the European Council of Ministers in 2008
Europeana has defined a Strategic Plan for where it wants to go in the time horizon 2011-2015. We have idnetified 4 strategic tracks in which we want to deliver value to users, to our partners and to other stakeholders. Track 1 and 3 are mostly focused on collaborating with the network, developers’communities and the cultural heritage sector. Track 3 and 4 are – mostly, not entirely- related to end users. As a whole, our partners are of key importance to reach all of our goals. Without our network, we would not have new content and new services and we could never deliver value to end users. Therefore, it is of key importance to us to deliver value to our partners, too.
Strategic track: Aggregate, major challenges: Growth of content to 30 million Efficient and streamlined harvesting and ingestion tools Light weight harvesting Self-publication? Improved metadata quality Persistent Identifiers Language identification (with good granularity, on the field level) Automated link checkers Increased amount of geodata (with good granularity, exact coordinates) Persons, Events, Periods Enriched metadata Enrichment of metadata Cross-linking of metadata within the Europeana aggregation Pulling back in from the LOD cloud!? Ontologies Continual improvement and versioning of EDM
Strategic strand: Facilitate , support our partner network and the cuktural heritage; major challenges: Europeana as data platform, to facilitate R&D and foster innovation New and improved APIs Support new applications based on our API, and follow through Linked Open Data publications Public SPARQL end-point? Implementation, tools and services for licensing License and Public Domain calculators License interoperability National open licenses Integrating with systems for collective licensing and orphan works (ARROW)
Strategic track: Distribute: make digital heritage available wherever theu are, whenever they want it. Major challenges: Improve the Europeana portal (although in the future, we are focusing less on europeana.eu as a destination portal Improve the search precision (w. 30 million objects this will be even more important) Semantic search & browse – leverage the power of EDM in search Improve usability and the user experience Multilingual search and results translation More meaningful ranking and more targeted notification Integration of metadata and ‘social use’ Offer thematic browsable entry points Who, What, When, Where? Improve the mobile user experience Geo-location aware Social web integration Different ways of distributing content Wikipedia batch uploads Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource Other partnerships?
Strategic strand: Engage, cultivate ways for users to participate in their cultural heritage. Major challenges: Improved virtual exhibition platform Extend for multiple exhibits and exhibitors Better integration with the Europeana repository User generated – annotations, tagging, curation, contribution Self-publication? Europeana as UGC-platform Europeana Awareness project – storytelling platform Europe 1914-1918 project Europeana Remix, the HTML5-Popcorn object Contextual information from Wikipedia Actually via Dbpedia to get semantically structured information Providing context on persons, subjects, events, periods To be displayed in search results and browse UI of the portal
In the near future, we need to improve the mobile experience we offer to users, offer them location-based services, interactivity and contextualization
More and more, users assume interactivity, to share and publish easily. Additionaly, social usage can be reflected in metadata to influence search ranking.
On Oct 11, we launched the upgraded user portal. These 3 slides outline priorities for the development team until the summer of 2012.
