The Commission has proposed updating the ePrivacy Regulation to strengthen privacy rules for electronic communications and adapt them to the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation. The proposal aims to ensure Europeans' electronic communications are private regardless of technology by applying ePrivacy rules to internet-based services like Skype, WhatsApp, and online messaging in addition to traditional telecom providers. The proposal also clarifies rules around cookies and direct marketing calls to give users more control over privacy settings and permissions for their personal data online and on devices.
