Ethnic Groups In The Philippines
What is Ethnic History?
• Ethnic history is a branch of social history that studies
ethnic groups and immigrants. –Wikipedia.org
Ethnic is derived from the Greek word ethnos (more precisely, from the adjective
ethnikos, which was loaned into Latin as ethnicus). The inherited English language
term for this concept is folk, used alongside the latinate people since the late
Middle English period.
 Ethnicity is defined as someone's cultural background or where they came from.
The Philippines is in fact up of a tapestry of ethnic groups, each at one point
independent kingdoms and chieftaincies. The unity of these Philippine ethnic
groups saw the overthrow of colonizers, namely Spain and America, through
armed revolution and active participation in lawmaking respectively.
Ethnic Groups In The Philippines
• The Philippine islands are inhabited by number of
different ethnic groups.
• The majority of the population is composed of
ethnolinguistic groups whose languages are
Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) in origin.
• Many of these groups converted to Christianity, and
adopted many foreign elements of culture.
• These ethnic groups include the Cebuano, Ilocano,
Pangasinense, Kapampangan, Tagalog, Bicolano,
and Waray.

In Mindanao
 there are people who practice Islam. The Spanish called them Moros
after the Moors. In some highland areas of Mindanao, there are
mountain-dwelling ethnic groups collectively known as lumad.
Lumad people do not practice Islam, and maintain their animistic
beliefs and traditions.
The Lumad are a group of Austronesian indigenous people in the
southern Philippines. It is a Cebuano term meaning "native" or "indigenous".
The term is short for Katawhang Lumad (Literally: "indigenous people"), the
autonym officially adopted by the delegates of the Lumad Mindanao Peoples
Federation (LMPF) founding assembly on 26 June 1986 at the Guadalupe
Formation Center, Balindog, Kidapawan, Cotabato, Philippines. Usage of the
term was accepted in Philippine jurisprudence when President Corazon Aquino
signed into law Republic Act 6734, where the word was used in Art. XIII sec. 8(2)
to distinguish Lumad ethnic communities from the Bangsamoro.

• The Negrito are a pre-Mongoloid people who migrated from mainland Asia and
were one of the earliest human beings to settle the Philippines, around 30,000
years ago.
• The Negrito population are estimated to number around 30,000.
• Their tribal groups include the Ati, and the Aeta. Their ways of life remain
mostly free from Western and Islamic influences. Scholars study them to try to
understand pre-Hispanic culture.
The Ati are a Negrito ethnic group in the Visayas, the central portion of the
Philippine archipelago. Their small numbers are principally concentrated in the islands of
Boracay, Panay and Negros.

The Aeta, Agta, or Dumagat, are collective terms for several
Filipino indigenous peoples who live in various parts of the island of
Luzon in the Philippines.

They are considered to be part of the Negrito ethnic groups and share
common physical characteristics of dark skin tones, short statures, curly to
Afro-textured hair, and a higher frequency of naturally lighter hair color
(blondish) relative to the general population.
• Most Filipinos are part of the Austronesian group, a group of
Malayo-Polynesian speaking people often known as Malay
race.
• Other ethnic groups form a minority in the Philippine
population. These include those of Spanish, American,
Chinese, Europeans, and other ethnic groups from other
countries. Mixed-race individuals are known as Filipino
mestizo.
•There are 134 ethnic groups in the Philippines, the
majority of which are indigenous, though much of the overall
Philippine population is constituted by only 8-10 lowland
ethnic groups.
The ancestral record of Philippine National Hero José
Rizal includes Austronesian, Japanese, Chinese, and
Spanish blood.
Activity 1

they are located.
