Ethnic minorities are often underrepresented or stereotyped in media. Analysis has found minorities are less likely to have leading roles and more likely to appear in entertainment roles rather than serious topics. Stereotypes portrayed include being deviant, stealing jobs, having limited skills, and posing a threat. While representation is becoming more equal, stereotypes still exist of associating ethnicity with problems and of reinforcing differences between ethnic and white groups. Specifically, Muslims are frequently portrayed negatively in news coverage and symbols of Muslim faith are targets of moral panic.
