Problem
 Our mid-size software company wants to keep growing to become a
national corporation
 That means we need to keep increasing our profits for our shareholders to
convince them to invest even more money
 One problem is that we need to show our shareholders more profits so
that we can ask appease them and eventually ask for money
 So the executives want to cut down 20% of the jobs and give their roles to
the other employees hired
 This will allow us to keep the same profits but keep costs down even lower

Upper management’s Logic
 Upper management utilizes egotistic logic as well as utilitarian
 First they claim that the business is an entity and it’s in the best interest of
the entity to build itself up by any means even if that means laying off the
workers
 Secondly they think that by allowing the layoff this will bring the most
good to the most people by allowing for us to grow and thus utilize our
product to more people who are in need of it in a type of utilitarian
mindset
Why it’s an Ethical Problem!
 It’s an ethical problem because this layoff will affect people in a profoundly
harmful way.
 Ethics concerns moral standards and moral standards “concern behavior
that seriously affects human well-being” (Shaw, & Barry, 2016, pg. 5)
 This layoff affects the financial situation of the employees who are laid off
as well as their families too
 It also negatively affects the employees who now have added workloads
Solution
 As manager, I have a solution of utilizing prime facie specifically granting
more moral significance to our employees than our investors
 Therefore I believe the best thing for us to do is retain employees who are
doing a satisfactory job and then give severance packages to the ones you
do fire
 Also I think it’s best that instead of cutting costs we should build out more
of our infrastructure and utilize the employees we have now

Problem  Our mid-size software company wants to keep growing to become a national corporation  That means we need to keep increasing our profits for our shareholders to convince them to invest even more money  One problem is that we need to show our shareholders more profits so that we can ask appease them and eventually ask for money  So the executives want to cut down 20% of the jobs and give their roles to the other employees hired  This will allow us to keep the same profits but keep costs down even lower Ethical Presentation – Zach Eparza

Upper management’s Logic  Upper management utilizes egotistic logic as well as utilitarian  First they claim that the business is an entity and it’s in the best interest of the entity to build itself up by any means even if that means laying off the workers  Secondly they think that by allowing the layoff this will bring the most good to the most people by allowing for us to grow and thus utilize our product to more people who are in need of it in a type of utilitarian mindset

Why it’s an Ethical Problem!  It’s an ethical problem because this layoff will affect people in a profoundly harmful way.  Ethics concerns moral standards and moral standards “concern behavior that seriously affects human well-being” (Shaw, & Barry, 2016, pg. 5)  This layoff affects the financial situation of the employees who are laid off as well as their families too  It also negatively affects the employees who now have added workloads

Solution  As manager, I have a solution of utilizing prime facie specifically granting more moral significance to our employees than our investors  Therefore I believe the best thing for us to do is retain employees who are doing a satisfactory job and then give severance packages to the ones you do fire  Also I think it’s best that instead of cutting costs we should build out more of our infrastructure and utilize the employees we have now
