Social change is defined broadly in terms of process and product to indicate that all kinds of
social change activity are welcomed and encouraged at Walden. As faculty members, students,
and alumni have indicated, even small acts can have large consequences, and many of these
consequences are unpredictable. The charge given to the Definition Task Force was to expand
the university’s definition of social change to provide more guidance for teaching, learning, and
assessing the social change mission at Walden. To that end, the Task Force offers the following
considerations.
To bring about long-term solutions and promote lasting effects through the process of social
change, the following features may need to be considered as appropriate to the context and
purposes of each program. The features are grouped under the headings Knowledge, Skills, and
Attitudes, to encourage a holistic approach to preparing learners for social change. The
groupings, however, are defined by soft boundaries because each feature belongs primarily to
one group but may share some of the qualities of the other groups.
A. Knowledge

The scholar-practitioner model is particularly suited to social change because knowledge

What is an OD Practice?
There are many types of organization development (OD) practices. Some OD professionals practice solo, often from home or in a small office. Others work in small boutique firms specializing in one area of OD. Some work for large management consulting firms and are part of multidisciplinary consulting teams. Some work as internal consultants in large corporations or government agencies. Over a long career, an OD practitioner may work in all of these roles.
One well-known OD practitioner started in a general international consulting firm and then moved to a private practice, only to find it extremely lonely. He then went to work for a Fortune 100 corporation and after several years became very weary with the corporate politics. In the next stage of his career, he took an academic position in a university and taught consultants and managers about organization development. After a lengthy stint as an academic, he joined a small boutique firm. Finally, he retired from the business world and taught online classes as an adjunct professor.
Organization Development and the Organizational Setting
Unlike many psychologists and some management trainers, an OD practitioner practices in an organizational setting. Without an organization as a client, the OD practitioner is simply theorizing like a sociologist or anthropologist might do. Even the solo practitioner is working within various organizations. The practitioner may be doing team building, management coaching, succession planning, or organizational redesign, but the client is an organization and the work gets done within an organization. The OD practitioner must always have the organization or community as his or her major focus.
Ethical Considerations
There will be times when the OD practitioner is confronted with ethical issues. Consider the following example:
A practitioner has been hired by an organization to coach an individual manager. During the session it becomes evident that the employee does not even want to be a manager and wants to leave the organization. What should the practitioner do? The practitioner’s client is the organization.
When this happens, the practitioner could consult the OD code of ethics, other OD practitioners, and his or her own conscience. It will happen, and sometimes it means walking away from a client or a job.
From an Individual to an Entire Community
Organization development practitioners work the gamut from one-on-one coaching to working with communities, nations, or multinational groups such as the United Nations. A comprehensive skill set and political savvy are necessary for OD practitioners who work in a variety of roles. OD practitioners are found in virtually any kind of organization. The following are just a few examples of where an OD practitioner might work:

We have learned how a society's culture can influence people. There are other elements in society, however, that also affect our decisions and behavior. Sociological research has found that in addition to culture, social structure and groups also significantly impact many of our individual choices. Our position in the social structure affects our behaviors, attitudes, and ideas. For example, an important element of social structure are groups. We belong to a variety of different groups. Decades of research have documented the impact of group conformity on the individual. Although people tend to often believe that they act as individuals and aren't impacted by others, research has found this is usually not the case. The Milgram experiment in your Resources is a great example. Milgram (1963) examined conformity and obedience and found that people are highly influenced by authority and the demands of conformity, even to the point that we will inflict pain on another person to obey authority.
Sociologists also study education and how it is impacted by a society's culture and structure. The purpose of education is to provide knowledge (facts, skills, cultural norms) to members of a society. In the United States, education teaches us not just skills, but also how to be effective citizens. Education transmits the dominant culture, ensuring that children understand cultural norms and values. Educational attainment impacts life outcomes—it affects our occupation, earnings, work conditions, and health. Thus, education is related to social inequality. We have a tendency to assume that education is an equalizer in the United States, but this is something that is debated by sociologists. Is education equally available to everyone? What is an OD Practice?
There are many types of organization development (OD) practices. Some OD professionals practice solo, often from home or in a small office. Others work in small boutique firms specializing in one area of OD. Some work for large management consulting firms and are part of multidisciplinary consulting teams. Some work as internal consultants in large corporations or government agencies. Over a long career, an OD practitioner may work in all of these roles.
One well-known OD practitioner started in a general international consulting firm and then moved to a private practice, only to find it extremely lonely. He then went to work for a Fortune 100 corporation and after several years became very weary with the corporate politics. In the next stage of his career, he took an academic position in a university and taught consultants and managers about organization development. After a lengthy stint as an academic, he joined a small boutique firm. Finally, he retired from the business world and taught online classes as an adjunct professor.
Organization Development and the Organizational Setting
Unlike many psychologists and some management trainers, an OD practitioner practices in an organizational setting. Without an organization as a client, the OD practitioner is simply theorizing like a sociologist or anthropologist might do. Even the solo practitioner is working within various organizations. The practitioner may be doing team building, management coaching, succession planning, or organizational redesign, but the client is an organization and the work gets done within an organization. The OD practitioner must always have the organization or community as his or her major focus.
Ethical Considerations
There will be times when the OD practitioner is confronted with ethical issues. Consider the following example:
A practitioner has been hired by an organization to coach an individual manager. During the session it becomes evident that the employee does not even want to be a manager and wants to leave the organization. What should the practitioner do? The practitioner’s client is the organization.
When this happens, the practitioner could consult the OD code of ethics, other OD practitioners, and his or her own conscience. It will happen, and sometimes it means walking away from a client or a job.
From an Individual to an Entire Community
Organization development practitioners work the gamut from one-on-one coaching to working with communities, nations, or multinational groups such as the United Nations. A comprehensive skill set and political savvy are necessary for OD practitioners who work in a variety of roles. OD practitioners are found in virtually any kind of organization. The following are just a few examples of where an OD practitioner might work:

We can oftentimes take a sociological concept and use it to explain something that occurs in our own lives. For example, you have learned about norms and how we tend to follow the norms of a society. You can use that to explain how people behave when they are in an elevator. Most people face forward, look up at the numbers, and don't talk.
Many of your experiences can be analyzed using sociological concepts. For your final assessment, Assessment 6, you will complete a Sociology of Me and apply many of the concepts you have learned about in this course to your own life. For Assessment 5, begin to think about which concepts you would like to apply to your own experience, develop an outline, and identify appropriate resources. In order to complete this assessment, you will need to show your understanding of some additional concepts related to social structure, education, and technology/media.
We have learned how a society's culture can influence people. There are other elements in society, however, that also affect our decisions and behavior. Sociological research has found that in addition to culture, social structure and groups also significantly impact many of our individual choices. Our position in the social structure affects our behaviors, attitudes, and ideas. For example, an important element of social structure are groups. We belong to a variety of different groups. Decades of research have documented the impact of group conformity on the individual. Although people tend to often believe that they act as individuals and aren't impacted by others, research has found this is usually not the case. The Milgram experiment in your Resources is a great example. Milgram (1963) examined conformity and obedience and found that people are highly influenced by authority and the demands of conformity, even to the point that we will inflict pain on another person to obey authority.
Sociologists also study education and how it is impacted by a society's culture and structure. The purpose of education is to provide knowledge (facts, skills, cultural norms) to members of a society. In the United States, education teaches us not just skills, but also how to be effective citizens. Education transmits the dominant culture, ensuring that children understand cultural norms and values. Educational attainment impacts life outcomes—it affects our occupation, earnings, work conditions, and health. Thus, education is related to social inequality. We have a tendency to assume that education is an equalizer in the United States, but this is something that is debated by sociologists. Is education equally available to everyone? The Extended Master in Public Health Degree Program (EXDP) at the University of Washington School of Public Health wants to increase engagement among current students, alumni, and the broader public health community using social media.
