Overview Of SCADA System
• A SCADA (Supervisory Control & Data
Acquisition) is an industrial computer
based control system used to acquire the
real time data to keep Track, Monitor &
Control industrial equipment at the
supervisory level
• It is a combination of Software , Hardware
& Protocols
• It is used in different types of industries
and various domains
Data Acquisition
Purpose Of SCADA System
• Ability to collect data control process from distance
• Ability to crate logs on system current and past state
• Ability to send necessary information to operators in real time using SMS and
internet
• Reduces man power needs
• Saves Energy Time and Money
• Less travelling for workers
• Reliable
• Supervisor Control over a particular system
Overall Function of SCADA

Innovation
Monolithic Or Early SCADA System
• Minicomputers are used earlier for
computing the SCADA system. In earlier
times, the common network services were not
available. Hence these are independent
system without having any connectivity to
other system .
• The function in the early first generation
were limited to monitoring sensors in the
system and flagging any operation in case of
surpassing programmed alarm level
Distributed SCADA System
• The sharing of control function is
distributed across the multiple system
connected to each other using Local Area
Network (LAN )
• These individual stations were used to
share real time information for
performing control tasks to trip the alarm
levels of possible problem
• But even in the second generation system
also the network protocols were not
standized

Networked SCADA System
• The current SCADA system are generally
networked and communication using
Wide Area Network (WAN) System over
mobile network, Ethernet or Fiber Optic
Connection for transmitting data between
the nodes frequently.
• These SCADA system use Programmable
Logic Controller (PLC) for Monitoring
and adjusting the system parameters
• Open system architecture and
communication protocols
Architecture SCADA System
Software Architecture SCADA System
Most of the servers are
used for multitasking and
real time database. The
servers are responsible for
data gathering and
handling
SCADA Basics
Human Machine Interface (HMI)
• It is an input device that presents the data to
be controlled by a human operator.
• It is used by linking to the SCADA system
software programs for providing the
information including the scheduled
maintenance procedures ,detailed schematics,
trending and diagnostic data for a specific
sensor or machine.
• HMI system facilitate the operation personnel
to see the information graphically
Supervisory System
• Supervisory system is used as server for
communicating between the equipment
of the SCADA system such as RTU’s,
PLC’s and sensor, etc. and the HMI
software used in the control room
workstations.
• Master Station comprises a single PC in
smaller SCADA system and in case of
larger SCADA system it comprises
distributed software application
Simulation
Remote Terminal Unit (RTU)
• Physical objects in the SCADA system are interfaced with
the microprocessor controlled electronics devices called as
Remote Terminal Units (RTU).
• These Units are used to transmit telemetry data to the
supervisory system and receive the message from the master
system for controlling the connected objects.
 Data logging & alarm handling
 Asks the field devices for information
 Can control IED (Intelligent Electronic Device)
 Slave / Master Device
• In SCADA system, PLC’s are connected to the
sensor for collecting the sensor output signals
in order signal in order to convert the sensor
signals into digital data.
PLC’s are used instead of RTU’s (Remote
Terminal Unit ) because of the advantages of
PLC like flexibility , configuration , versatile
and affordability compared to RTU
Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)
SCADA Servers
• It can be a web server
• Data logging
• Analysing data
• Serve the clients through a firewall
• Client connected through internet
• Real time Decision maker
• Asks RTU (Remote Terminal Unit ) for Information
SCADA System Application Area
• Oil & Gas Production, Treatment, Gathering, Movement,
Transportation, Pipelines and Distribution & Networks
• Oil Tank Fames, Trucks Loading / Unloading facilities
• Gas Compressor & Oil Pumping Stations
• Utilities and Municipalities managing Water, Gas, Electric Power,
Heating distribution networks
• Drinkable Water purification & Transportation facilities,
Wastewater Treatment Plants
• Electric Power Industry :- Generation, Transmission, EMS & DMS,
Distribution
