PURPOSE AND COLLECTION METHODS
The English which is spoken in India is different from that spoken in other regions of the world,
and it is regarded as the unique variety which is called Indian English. The purpose of this folklore
project is to show some of the various ways Indians have intentionally and unintentionally
customized English to better suit their needs and to discuss some of the problems and situations
which can and do arise when Indians use or experience English in different settings. Attitudes about
English and English speakers in India are also explored.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF INDIAN ENGLISH
Indian English is a distinct variety of the English language. Many Indians claim that it is very

similar to British English, but this opinion is based on a surface level examination of lexical
similarities. Of course, one must keep in mind that not every linguistic item is used by every Indian
English speaker and that a great deal of regional and educational differentiation exists. Even so,
items can be identified which are indicative of Indian English speech and which are widely used.

English As International Language Essay
English is an international language, that have used by people around the world to communicate and
make people easy to communicate each other. English is one of languages that have to be master. In
Indonesia, English have been taught since Elementary school to university. But, not all people can
apply it in their real life. That is why English is important to teach at the early ages, because English
becomes the important communication tool. According to Graddol (2006) states that using of
English have been taught from several decades and became international Language in the world.
In Indonesia, English as the first foreign language have been taught as a formal language in the

So, in teach, English teacher need has many strategies to make students easy to understand and to get
attention from them. There are three strategies function In English, they are (1) as a Lingua Franca in
the world (2) as a first language that used in science and technology (3) as a "Lingua Franca"
between leader in the country. In learning English, teacher should be relaxing, enjoy and fun to make
students comforatable and feel that learning English is not difficult as they had

For me, learning a language is a complicated process. It is different from learning other subjects. It
involves a lot of practices and follow up. When I talk about my personal experience, I would say
that I have a rich experience in learning English as a second language. English was taught to me for
ten years starting from grade seven till graduation from university. After graduation, I felt that I
should improve my language skills. Therefore, I did a lot of efforts personally to increase my
fluency. Until now I still learn the language. Indeed, learning a language takes a lifetime.
I started learning English as a second language when I was in first intermediate. I still remember my
first classes and my first teachers. I remember that my teachers changed frequently in the first year
but all of them have much in common. All of them used grammar translation method. They used to
write bilingual lists of words on board, then we, as students, were asked to copy these lists and
memorize them by heart. All teaching concentrated on reading and writing skills, but there were no
activities concentrating on speaking or listening. In addition, grammar rules were taught in that stage
of learning the language as mathematics equations, and we were asked to memorize the rules as we

Of course, there are certain defects or gaps in my knowledge or ability to use the English language
like using idioms and the appropriateness of some vocabulary. Idioms have many connotations and
denotations in the English language. Sometimes I use an idiom and I mean something, but the
connotations of the idiom means something else. Another gap of my knowledge of the language is
the appropriateness of using certain vocabulary. English language entails high sense of using the
appropriate word for describing or narrating something. To my mind, I have not reached this point
