*Children's Art From the "Land of the Firebird"*
This collection of artworks by Russian children, ages 5-15, was inspired by their national fairy tales and folk tales. The forest animals and 'tricksters' that live across the pages of their folk tales add vitality, inventiveness and humor to their art. The ubiquitous "Clever Fox" in Russian tales is a stand-in for "Br'er Fox" in American stories like "Tales of Uncle Remus". The stories and legends carry children off to a magic world with real life situations that usually turn out well: evil is punished and good deeds are rewarded. The folk tales and legends of all cultures are bound together by common threads of morality and values that are passed through the generations to children all over the world.
These artworks have been exhibited in over 50 locations in New York and beyond - public libraries, schools, children's hospitals, city halls and art museums. Over 300 artworks in the collection were sold at silent auctions, beginning in 1993, and proceeds were returned to their schools in Russia. American children also have sent artworks to Russia since mid-1900s. A large collection of these works is stored in Moscow.

The common narrative structure is known as a "story grammar".

Snow White lived as a servant for her cruel stepmother, who was jealous of Snow White's beauty and asked a servant to kill her. The servant spared Snow White and left her in the forest. The stepmother found Snow White disguised as an old lady and tricked her into eating a poisonous apple. The prince's kiss broke the spell, and he took Snow White to his castle to live happily ever after.
The document summarizes a folk tale from Jambi province. A poor mother falls ill and her youngest daughter bravely goes to retrieve a special flower from a mountain cave guarded by a snake to heal her. The snake agrees to let the daughter take the flower if she promises to return. She does, and discovers the snake is actually a cursed prince. However, her jealous sisters burn the snake skin, removing the curse but risking the daughter. In the end though, the prince and daughter marry, resolving the complications.
Snow White lived with her stepmother after her parents passed away. One day, her stepmother asked her maid to kill Snow White out of jealousy. The maid took Snow White into the woods but couldn't kill her. Snow White found shelter in an empty hut and later met seven dwarfs who let her live with them. She was given a poisoned apple by an old woman and fell unconscious. A prince awoke her with a kiss and they later married, living happily ever after.
