This document outlines factors to consider when designing an English language course, including questions about why students need to learn, who will be involved in teaching, where learning will take place, when it will occur, what content will be covered, and how learning will be achieved. It suggests addressing questions about objectives, time, language skills, proficiency levels, topics, learning theory, and methodology. Course design should also consider the syllabus, teaching methods, learner characteristics, and learning environment.
This book provides a survey of the major approaches to structural linguistics that developed in the 20th century. It summarizes theories from the Prague School, Copenhagen School, American structuralism, functional linguistics, and transformational grammar. The book also examines topics like mathematical linguistics and machine translation. It compares key concepts and debates between different scholars and linguistic traditions. Overall, the book aims to give readers a comprehensive but concise overview of the different traditions within structural linguistics and how they relate to one another.
This document discusses different approaches to language description and analysis throughout history. It begins by explaining that language description breaks down a language system to describe grammar and generate sentences. Next, it outlines some traditional and modern approaches, including structural linguistics, transformational generative grammar, and language variation analysis. Finally, it discusses how language variation analysis led to the development of English for Specific Purposes based on identifying language features of different contexts.
This document describes different approaches to analyzing and describing language:
1. Classical/Traditional Grammar analyzes the grammatical function of each word based on inflections as in Latin and Greek.
2. Structural Linguistics describes grammar through syntagmatic sentence structures and notions of time, number, gender.
3. Transformational Generative Grammar argues structural descriptions are superficial and do not explain relationships of meaning between surface structures.
4. Language Variation and Register Analysis examines how language varies according to context, such as areas of knowledge in English for Specific Purposes.
5. Functional/Notional Grammar focuses on social functions like advising or describing, and how the human mind thinks in
This document discusses the relationship between linguistics and language teaching. It begins by explaining that both fields take language as their subject but that linguistics is the scientific study of language while language teaching focuses on applying linguistic theories to help students learn languages. The document then provides a brief history of applied linguistics and how theories from structural linguistics, functional linguistics, and other approaches influenced different language teaching methods over time. Finally, it discusses concepts like syllabus design, types of language tests, and the benefits of testing in language teaching.
The document outlines and compares different approaches to describing language: classical/traditional grammar, structural linguistics, transformational generative grammar, language variation and register analysis, functional/notional grammar, and discourse (rhetorical) analysis. Classical grammar is based on analysis of word roles in sentences but has limited application to English. Structural linguistics describes language through substitution tables and syntagmatic structures, providing a means to sequence language items but failing to explain relationships of meaning.
This document summarizes different approaches to language description including classical grammar, structural linguistics, transformational grammar, language variations and register analysis, functional and notional syllabus, and discourse analysis. It discusses how the concept of language variation led to the development of English for Specific Purposes based on register analysis. Examples are provided to show how language varies based on context between informal spoken text versus formal written instructions. The document concludes that developments in language description are interrelated and distinguishing performance from competence is important in describing a language for learning purposes.
The document discusses several theories of learning, including behaviorism which views learning as habit formation through reinforcement, mentalism which sees learning as acquiring rules through thinking, and cognitivism which considers learners as active processors of information who solve problems. It notes that while a need to acquire knowledge is necessary, learners should also enjoy the learning process. The conclusion advocates an eclectic approach drawing on useful aspects of different theories based on teaching experience rather than any single theory.

Language description and functional GrammarMadiha Batool
Functional grammar analyzes language based on choices and how grammar constructs meaning in context. It looks at analyzing experience, interaction, and message construction. Functional grammar in ESP deals with analyzing processes, participants, circumstances, mood, modality, and clause combining. Notional grammar expresses ideas and social behaviors that do not vary across languages. Functional grammar is useful for ESP as it focuses on actual language use and human thinking. Some advantages are that it provides an inventory of language elements and is based on factual study of language use.
The document discusses several learning theories that are relevant to course design:
- Cognitive theory focuses on mental processes like thinking and problem-solving. Learning involves changing mental schemas.
- Behaviorism views learning as the formation of stimulus-response habits through reinforcement. Operant conditioning uses rewards to shape behaviors.
- Constructivism holds that learners construct their own knowledge through experience and social interaction. Learning involves problem-solving and critical thinking.
- Humanism emphasizes the affective domain and sees learners as whole persons aiming to fulfill their potential. Factors like motivation and emotion influence learning.
The document discusses different approaches to course design for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) programs. It describes three main approaches: language-centered, skills-centered, and learning-centered. The learning-centered approach is presented as the most comprehensive because it considers the learner at every stage of the design process, including needs analysis, syllabus and materials development, methodology, and evaluation. It emphasizes that course design should be a negotiated and dynamic process that adapts to learners' needs and changing resources over time.
ESP is an approach to language teaching where all decisions about content and methods are based on the learners' reasons for learning. It is not about teaching specialized varieties of English for different professions. ESP course design considers factors like the learners' language needs, backgrounds, and learning situations. Effective course design also draws on language descriptions, learning theories, and needs analysis.
ESP PPT : GROUP 3 SYLLABUS AND COURSE DESIGN IN ESPDieyana Rahman
The document discusses course design and syllabus for English for Specific Purposes. It describes language-centered, skill-centered, and learning-centered approaches to course design. The types and purposes of different syllabi are outlined. A syllabus plays an important role in organizing content and sequencing lessons according to the chosen approach to course design, whether it is language-centered, skill-centered, learning-centered, or learner-centered. Criteria for organizing a syllabus include focusing on key materials, selecting and subdividing topics, and deciding on sequencing.
1. The document outlines various theories and approaches to describing language, including classical/traditional grammar, structural linguistics, transformational generative grammar, functional/notional grammar, register analysis, discourse analysis, and text-diagramming.
2. It notes that traditional grammar provides useful terms for discussing language, while structural linguistics describes grammar through syntagmatic structures and notions of time, number, and gender.
3. Transformational generative grammar examines two levels of meaning - deep and surface structures - and how language can be viewed in terms of form and function.
Ferdinand de Saussure was a pioneer in modern linguistics who viewed language as a system of arbitrary signs. He made an important distinction between langue (the abstract system of a language) and parole (individual usage). Saussure also differentiated between the synchronic study of language at a single point in time versus the diachronic study of language evolution over time. His work emphasized analyzing the langue through its sign relationships and structure at a fixed time period, establishing linguistics as a formal, scientific discipline.
Ferdinand de Saussure: The Father of LinguisticsSilvia Lee
Ferdinand de Saussure was a Swiss linguist considered the father of linguistics. He taught courses on Sanskrit, Gothic, Old High German, and Indo-European languages at the University of Geneva. Saussure developed the concepts of langue and parole, the system of a language and its usage, and emphasized the arbitrary nature of the linguistic sign. He viewed language as a system of relations and differences that is studied through both synchrony, the present state, and diachrony, its historical development.
The document discusses different types of syllabi that can be used in English language teaching, including procedural, cultural, situational, skill-based, structural, multi-dimensional, task-based, process, learner-led, proportional, content-based, and lexical syllabi. It emphasizes that no single type is appropriate for all situations and teachers should choose types that fit their teaching procedures, combining multiple types to create a flexible syllabus that meets student needs.

Digital Banking in the Cloud: How Citizens Bank Unlocked Their MainframePrecisely
Inconsistent user experience and siloed data, high costs, and changing customer expectations – Citizens Bank was experiencing these challenges while it was attempting to deliver a superior digital banking experience for its clients. Its core banking applications run on the mainframe and Citizens was using legacy utilities to get the critical mainframe data to feed customer-facing channels, like call centers, web, and mobile. Ultimately, this led to higher operating costs (MIPS), delayed response times, and longer time to market.
Ever-changing customer expectations demand more modern digital experiences, and the bank needed to find a solution that could provide real-time data to its customer channels with low latency and operating costs. Join this session to learn how Citizens is leveraging Precisely to replicate mainframe data to its customer channels and deliver on their “modern digital bank” experiences.

Bram Verhoef, Head of Machine Learning at Axelera AI, presents the “How Axelera AI Uses Digital Compute-in-memory to Deliver Fast and Energy-efficient Computer Vision” tutorial at the May 2024 Embedded Vision Summit.
As artificial intelligence inference transitions from cloud environments to edge locations, computer vision applications achieve heightened responsiveness, reliability and privacy. This migration, however, introduces the challenge of operating within the stringent confines of resource constraints typical at the edge, including small form factors, low energy budgets and diminished memory and computational capacities. Axelera AI addresses these challenges through an innovative approach of performing digital computations within memory itself. This technique facilitates the realization of high-performance, energy-efficient and cost-effective computer vision capabilities at the thin and thick edge, extending the frontier of what is achievable with current technologies.
In this presentation, Verhoef unveils his company’s pioneering chip technology and demonstrates its capacity to deliver exceptional frames-per-second performance across a range of standard computer vision networks typical of applications in security, surveillance and the industrial sector. This shows that advanced computer vision can be accessible and efficient, even at the very edge of our technological ecosystem.

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...Alex Pruden
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

HCL Notes and Domino License Cost Reduction in the World of DLAUpanagenda
Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/hcl-notes-and-domino-license-cost-reduction-in-the-world-of-dlau/
The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!
We’ll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. We’ll provide examples and solutions for those as well. And naturally we’ll explain the new licensing model.
Join HCL Ambassador Marc Thomas in this webinar with a special guest appearance from Franz Walder. It will give you the tools and know-how to stay on top of what is going on with Domino licensing. You will be able lower your cost through an optimized configuration and keep it low going forward.
These topics will be covered
- Reducing license cost by finding and fixing misconfigurations and superfluous accounts
- How do CCB and CCX licenses really work?
- Understanding the DLAU tool and how to best utilize it
- Tips for common problem areas, like team mailboxes, functional/test users, etc
- Practical examples and best practices to implement right away
