What can you do with a retired plane? We challenged students from the Université de Montréal to recycle and redesign materials from a donated CRJ100 aircraft. The goal of this challenge was to show that a retired aircraft can become a source of raw materials, reducing the need for virgin raw materials and landfill usage. Take a look at some of the amazingly creative items the 16 industrial design students created.
It discusses Bombardier's location in Bruges, Belgium, their financial results over the past 12 months on the Euronext Brussel stock exchange, placed orders, forecasts, and conclusion. While Bombardier Belgium needs a new order from NMBS and stocks have dropped as revenues decrease, the conclusion is that the company has a positive forecast and remains financially healthy overall.
Bombardier is a Canadian engineering company that manufactures planes and trains, employing 75,000 people worldwide. It has two main departments, Bombardier Aerospace and Bombardier Transportation, which generated $16.4 billion and $18.2 billion in revenues respectively. Bombardier has a location in Bruges, Belgium with around 1,000 employees, where the future depends on an order from Belgium's national railway company. While Bombardier saw revenues increase to $18.2 billion by 2012, earnings per share remained modest at $0.33 per share that year.
The Q400 NextGen aircraft is a large, fast, quiet, and fuel efficient turboprop optimized for short-haul operations with 70 to 86 seats. It provides passenger comfort and good operating economics while reducing environmental impact. The aircraft has a maximum cruise speed of 360 knots and can fly up to 1,114 nautical miles with a full passenger and cargo load.

The Q400 NextGen aircraft has transformed perceptions of turboprops as a high-performance alternative to jets. It is a large, fast, quiet, and fuel-efficient 70-86 seat turboprop aircraft optimized for short-haul flights. It provides greater passenger comfort and operating economics with reduced environmental footprint compared to older jets. The Q400 NextGen aircraft also set new environmental standards with 30-40% less fuel use and lower carbon emissions. Its flexibility allows for optimized short flights while maintaining block time, cargo, and maintenance advantages.

This document provides a case analysis and recommendations for Bombardier regarding its options in dealing with subsidies provided to its competitor Embraer by the Brazilian government. It analyzes three options for Bombardier: 1) urging Canada to impose trade sanctions on Brazil, 2) negotiating directly with Brazil and Embraer, or 3) having Canada match Brazilian subsidies. It ultimately recommends the second option of restarting negotiations as posing the fewest risks in terms of costs and public opposition, while still allowing the other options if negotiations fail. The analysis draws on academic literature regarding international trade, political strategies, and subsidies to support this recommended course of action.

muCon 2014 "Building Java Microservices for the Cloud"Daniel Bryant
Building microservices for the Cloud is easy, right?... Perhaps, but if you want to build effective and reliable services that not only work correctly within the Cloud, but also take advantage of running within this unique environment, then you might be in for a surprise. This talk will introduce lessons learnt over the past several years of designing and implementing successful Cloud-based Java applications which we have codified into our Cloud development ‘DHARMA' principles; Documented (just enough); Highly cohesive / lowly coupled (all the way down); Automated from commit to cloud; Resource aware; Monitored thoroughly; and Antifragile.
We will look at these lessons from both a theoretic and practical perspective using several real-world case studies involving a move from monolithic applications deployed into a data center on a 'big bang' schedule, to a platform of JVM-based loosely-coupled components, all being continuously deployed into the Cloud. Topics discussed will include API contracts and documentation, architecture, build and deployment pipelines, Cloud fabric properties, monitoring in a distributed environment, and fault-tolerant design patterns.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
