South Africa's mining equipment sector is a major exporter, constituting 8.5% of exports. However, imports are three times larger than exports. South Africa has competitive advantages in mine safety, ventilation, shaft sinking, and tracked mining due to its dense network of suppliers, skills, and local value addition of 90%. However, some advantages are declining as skills shortages increase and research funding decreases. The government is working to address challenges like expanding training to maintain South Africa's position in the mining equipment sector.
