Piero Manzoni's 1962 work Achrome consisted of bread rolls covered in white china clay in a simple repetitive pattern devoid of color or narrative. This conceptual work drew influence from Marcel Duchamp's emphasis on concepts over aesthetics in works like his 1917 readymade Fountain. Jasper Johns' 1957 Flag and Robert Rauschenberg's 1951 White Painting also featured monochrome white palettes and incorporated found objects in a Duchampian style. Both Manzoni, Johns, and Rauschenberg paid homage to Duchamp's concepts of readymades and challenging conventional notions of art in their work, showing Duchamp's enduring impact on 20th century avant-garde art movements

Pablo Picasso's Cubist period from 1907-1912 saw his style evolve significantly. An early Cubist work, his 1909 plaster bust Tête de femme exhibits strong African influences in the carved facial features, alluding to tribal masks. In contrast, his 1911 painting Tête is a more abstract, fractured portrait composed of simple lines and shapes. While both works exhibit Cubist characteristics, Tête lacks discernible features and African influence, demonstrating Picasso had already begun adapting Cubism within a few years. Comparing works from Picasso's Cubist period is essential to understanding how his style continuously changed, both during this time and his artistic career overall.
Norman Rockwell's 1964 painting "The Problem We All Live With" depicts Ruby Bridges, a young African American girl, being escorted to her newly desegregated school surrounded by U.S. marshals. While critics argue Rockwell painted such progressive works for monetary gain, the author argues Rockwell chose to portray Civil Rights depictions to bring attention to his genuine support for equality in an accessible way. The author analyzes Rockwell's background and shift in subject matter at Look magazine to demonstrate his legitimate interest in promoting Civil Rights, not just financial profit.

Franz Marc and Modernism: Contextualising Deer in the Woods II Within Twentie...Kelly Richman-Abdou
Franz Marc's 1911 painting Deer in the Woods II depicts an abstracted landscape with a sleeping deer. The painting combines recognizable subjects with blocks of saturated color in a dreamlike style. The document compares Deer in the Woods II to works by Paul Gauguin, Wassily Kandinsky, and Helen Frankenthaler to show how it reflects trends in early 20th century modernism like post-impressionism, expressionism, and abstract expressionism through its use of unnatural color, blurred forms, and focus on nature. Comparing the painting to works spanning over 60 years provides context for Franz Marc's style and the progression of modern art toward abstraction.
