EPL Tendon Rupture Makes Difficult To
Straighten the Thump
The muscles that enable the fingers to bend (flex)
are known as flexor muscles. These muscles rum from
the elbow to the forearm enable the movement of
the fingers with cord-like extensions- tendons,
connecting the muscles to the bone. In the fingers,
the tendons run through tunnels that hold them
close to the bone helping them to work effectively.
A deep cut or any other incident can injure the
tendons, nerves and blood vessels. Flexor Tendon
Injuries may look simple on the outer side but can be
complex on the inside. These injuries will make the
movement of the fingers difficult.
The thumb has a long extensor tendon that is known as the Extensor Pollicis Longus (EPL). It
helps the thumb to straighten its end joint and helps in its movement towards the index
finger. This tendon is situated on the back of the wrist and runs around a bony prominence
called Lister’s tubercle. This tendon is susceptible to rupture and one can suffer EPL Tendon
Rupture in to situations- if you suffer a fracture or if you have Rheumatoid Arthritis. Rapture
in this tendon willgive you pain, inability to straighten the thumb, to place your hand flat on a
table.
The fingers are connected to the hand at the joint called the metacarpophalangeal (MP) joint.
The middle joint of the fingers is termed as the proximalinterphalangeal(PIP) joint. Injuries in
these joints cause pain and inflammation and you can initially treat this with buddy-taping and
a steroid injection to reduce inflammation. If the pain continues even after two injections
than you can opt for MP Joint & PIP Joint Arthroscopy treatment. Arthroscopy for both the
joints is a minimally invasive treatment that is helpful to both diagnose and treat many joint
disorders. It involves a minimalpain and you need to take care of the wound for 24 hours.
