Distal radius fractures occur when the radius bone in the forearm is broken, often from a fall onto an outstretched hand. This is also called a wrist fracture due to its proximity to the wrist joint. Wrist arthritis causes pain, stiffness, and swelling in the wrist joints and can be diagnosed through examination of swelling, limitations in finger movement, and tendon problems. Initial treatment may involve wearing a wrist splint or resting the wrist and avoiding strenuous activities to relieve pain. For moderate pain, steroid injections may help, while severe, disabling pain may require surgery to remove, fuse, or replace bones in the wrist.
