FADE IN:
INT. FRONT DOOR - DAY
Tommy’s Mother, DEB (40) is at the front door with purse
ready to leave. TOMMY (10), and REX, a welsh corgi, are close
by.
DEB
(to Tommy)
Ok, today’s the day I leave you
home alone for the first time.
TOMMY
(saluting)
Don’t worry, you can count on me.
(to Rex)
Right, Rex?
Rex BARKS.
DEB
Remember all the rules?
TOMMY
(annoyingly)
Yes, mom.
DEB
Alright, bye, I’ll be back by 8.
Deb closes the door behind her. Tommy and Rex go to the
window to watch her drive off. They run to the pantry.
FLASHBACK
Deb, Tommy, and Rex are at the kitchen table.
DEB
Tommy, now don’t eat too much junk
food. You need to stay healthy. Eat
a proper lunch.
BACK TO:
INT. DEN - DAY
Tommy sits down on the couch with a bowel of popcorn, along
with other junk food. He turns on the TV and flips to an
animated superhero show. Rex comes over to the couch and sits
in obedience.
TOMMY
Want some?
Rex BARKS and Tommy throws a piece of popcorn at Rex, who
catches it. Tommy keeps increasing the height, and Rex keeps
catching, sometimes jumping up.
LATER:
The den is covered with junk food and trash. Tommy is playing
video games. Rex eats out of a bag of chips.
The phone RINGS.
Tommy has a worried look on his face.
INT. HALLWAY - DAY
INTERCUT DEB/TOMMY
He runs over and picks up the cordless phone. Deb is on her
cell phone in a dentist waiting room.
DEB
You doing alright? Safe?
TOMMY
(annoyingly)
Fine mom, only been a few hours.
DEB
I know, I know. Well if you need
ANYTHING, just call. Well, love
you.
TOMMY
You too.
Tommy hangs up the phone.
Deb closes the cell phone.
END INTERCUT
INT. DENTIST WAITING ROOM - DAY
In the background there is DRILLING and a patient YELLS in
pain. Deb and others look up, worried. One person runs out of
the room. A receptionist watches as he runs out.
2.
INT. DEN - DAY
Tommy plays tug-a-war with a chewtoy with Rex. There is a
KNOCK at the door.
INT. FRONT DOOR - DAY
Rex BARKS a few times and looks out the window. Tommy runs
over and sees MARK (12) is at the window waving.
I/E. FRONT DOOR - DAY
Tommy opens the front door to see Mark standing behind the
screen-in part.
MARK
(pointing to door)
Mind?
DEB (V.O.)
Tommy, now make sure you don’t open
the door for anyone. Rex can keep
you company.
TOMMY
Well...
MARK
Come on. How long have we known
each other, 10 years?
TOMMY
You moved in just four years ago.
MARK
Not the point.
TOMMY
Oh, alright.
Mark comes in with a bag of water balloons.
TOMMY (CONT’D)
What are those for?
MARK
Revenge.
FLASHBACK
3.
EXT. TOMMY’S FRONT YARD - DAY
Mark and Tommy are tossing a football, when it slips out of
Tommy’s hand. He catches, barely missing MR. BROWN’S (70s)
flowers. He sprays them with a water hose.
MR. BROWN
Get out of here. Bunch of trouble
makers.
BACK TO:
INT. FRONT DOOR - DAY
TOMMY
Sorry Mark, have to stay within our
fence.
MARK
Oh well, maybe another...
Mark notices a large slingshot.
MARK (CONT’D)
Wait.
EXT. TOMMY’S BACKYARD - DAY
Tommy and Mark are at the wooden fence that separates Mr.
Brown and him. They are wearing military helmets with leaves
on top. On the other side Mr. Brown is in a rocketing chair
asleep, waking up and going back asleep.
Tommy is filling up water balloons, while Mark aims the
slingshot.
MARK
(reaching hand back)
Balloon.
TOMMY
Not sure about this.
MARK
Don’t you leave me soldier.
TOMMY
(handing him a balloon)
Alright.
4.
Mark aims the slingshot up at a angle towards Mr. Brown’s
yard. The first goes way past Mr. Brown to other side. Next
one barely gets over. One finally hits him in the face.
MARK
(softly and excited)
Yes!
MR. BROWN (O.S.)
(slowly gets up)
Hey who’s doing that?!
(fades to sleep)
Once I get my hands on you...
The cordless phone in Tommy’s pocket RINGS. Mark shoots him a
shocked look. He throws his hand up in frustration.
Tommy answers the phone and walks towards the house.
TOMMY
Hello?
INTERCUT DEB/TOMMY
DEB (V.O.)
Hey Tommy, book club was cancelled
so I’ll be home soon.
A beat. Tommy has a fearful look on his face.
DEB
Tommy?
TOMMY
Yes?
DEB
(looking at watch)
See you in... about twenty minutes.
TOMMY’S MOTHER
Alright, bye.
DEB
Bye.
CUT TO:
Mark approaches Tommy
MARK
Well?
5.
TOMMY
Coming home soon.
MARK
Well that’s my queue.
Mark gathers up the remaining water balloons.
MARK (CONT’D)
Aright, later man.
TOMMY
No chance of helping me with the
chores?
MARK
Sorry, still got a mission.
(looking at slingshot)
You mind?
Tommy gasters a yes with his hand.
INT. DEN - DAY
As he cleans every so often he checks his watch. He goes
around the house picking up the trash. Rex head follows Tommy
as he moves around the room. He washes the dishes. He vacuums
the den. He clears off the table and sets it.
LATER:
Deb walks in with the groceries.
DEB
Hey Tommy, home a little later then
I thought.
Tommy is asleep on the couch with Rex beside him.
FADE OUT.
