This document provides an overview of the 50-year history of the Institute for Educational Leadership's Education Policy Fellowship Program (EPFP). It began in 1964 as the Washington Internships in Education (WIE) with funding from the Ford Foundation to develop education policy leaders. Over the years it has expanded to include state-based programs and now has over 8,000 alumni. The program provides year-long fellowships for emerging leaders to learn about the education policy process. It aims to develop non-partisan, collaborative leaders who can work across boundaries. While the policy issues and participants have changed over time, the goal of building leadership skills through the program has remained consistent.
