The document discusses Ireland's Archaeological Code of Practice between the Irish Concrete Federation (ICF) and the Government. The Code aims to protect archaeological heritage while allowing development. ICF members agreed to avoid impacts on archaeology when possible and fully fund preservation of sites that must be removed. A Project Archaeologist was appointed to implement the Code and ensure high quality archaeological investigations are conducted. The Code is currently being reviewed and updated. Section 261 of the Planning Act introduced archaeological conditions for quarries relating to site protection and investigations. As more quarries operate under these conditions, a sustainable approach must be developed. Quarry managers must be aware of on-site archaeology and avoidance is the preferred approach through pre-acquisition surveys and design adaptations.
