2. WHAT IS
POLLUTION?• Pollution is a general term used to describe the
harm caused to air, water and soil.
• There are four main types of pollution. They are :
Air Pollution
Water pollution
Soil Pollution / Land Pollution
Noise Pollution
3. AIR POLLUTION
• The mixing of harmful gases and other particles in
the air is called air pollution. Polluted air affects
our health. Breathing in polluted air can cause
diseases and other health problems.
• Some substances which cause air pollution come
from natural sources. Sandstorms, volcanic
eruptions, forest fires and pollens from plants and
flowers are natural causes of pollution. Pollen
irritates the eyes and harms the respiratory
organs.
4. MORE ABOUT AIR
POLLUTION• The main cause of air pollution, however, are
human-made factors. Smoke from factories,
vehicles, the burning of fuels and firecrackers
pollute the air around us. Sometimes, the
pollutants produced may combine with natural
substances to cause great harm.
• For Example : Smoke combines with fog to form
‘Smog’. It is very harmful as it causes breathing
problems such as asthma.
5. WATER POLLUTION
• Harmful substances that are released in the water
cause water pollution. Both fresh and salty water
can get polluted. Sometimes underground water
also gets polluted.
• Pollution of water is caused by both natural and
human factors. For example, storms often cause
soil and other particles to dissolve in water. This
water gets polluted. It cannot be used for drinking
and cooking.
6. WATER POLLUTION IS USUALLY
CAUSED DUE TO HUMAN
ACTIVITIES SUCH AS :
• Dumping wastes including harmful chemicals from
factories.
• Dumping household waste. Sewage water is also
often dumped untreated into rivers.
• Bathing and washing clothes in rivers.
• Leakage from oil tankers.
Water pollution plants and animals. People also
become sick. Jaundice, gastroenteritis and typhoid
are caused when we drink polluted water.can be
7. LAND OR SOIL
POLLUTIONThe pollution of land or soil is caused when harmful
substances are released into the soil or accumulate
on the land. The main sources of soil pollution are :
• Solid wasted such as garbage.
• Refuse from mines.
• Refuse from forests and agriculture.
Pollution makes the soil infertile. It harms the
organisms living in the soil.
8. NOISE POLLUTION
• Excessive and unpleasant sound in our
environment is called noise or sound pollution.
Noise is harmful to all living things. It causes
stress, irritation and can also lead to loss of
hearing.
• The intensity of sound measured in decibels. The
softest sound we can hear is about 20 decibels.
Rock music, on the other hand, is more than 100
decibels. Any sound louder than 90 decibels is
harmful for the ears.
9. THE MAIN CAUSES OF NOISE
POLLUTION ARE :
•Car and Bus
•Loudspeakers and Loud Music
•Firecrackers
Damage to the environment affects us
directly. We must always protect the
environment from being polluted.
