Environment modelling

Environment Modelling: Log
To make thismodel,Iused6 independentobjectsinthe Lightwavemodeller(the white frontplate,
the black backplate, andthe fourgoldenscrews.) Tomake the white frontplate, Imade aflat
rectangularobjectwiththe box tool, andthenI usedthe knife tool tomake the cornersof the box
intoseparate polygons,andthendeletedthosepolygons.Then,Iusedthe beveltool toraise the
objectandcreate more faces.
To make the screws,I createdsphereswiththe appropriate tool, andthenusedBooleanswitha
cuboidobjectinanotherlayertosubtract the area of the spheres, tocreate the dipsinthe middle.
Thismodel comestoa size of 2 metersby2 meterson the in-applicationgridmeasurements,which
isimportantbecause thismodel isthe standardbywhichI scale the size of each othermodel I
create.
I alsousedthismodel asthe basisfor anothervariant;a displaycase version.
2. LuisVazquez
For the displayvariant,Icreateda simple box usingaprimitive-creationtool,inaseparate layerto
the original wall model.ThenIusedthe boolean>subtracttool to create an inside areathatextends
throughthe back of the model tomake it seemlargerthanit actuallyis;italsoservesthe purpose of
beinganarea where Ican place other, smallerobjectstodecorate myenvironment.
It alsohas a single polygonthathasa ‘glass’texture whichistransparentwhenrenderedinrealtime,
makingitso that youcan see intothe innerbox of the model.
Thisblankpanel wasverysimple tomake,Icreateda 2d planarsquare usingthe create box tool,
thenusedmultiply>bevel onthe polygontocreate a 'raised'surface.Thispiece isnotable forbeing

the base of the largestnumberof variantson a model of anyof myworks, includingthese floor
piecesthatare designedtolinktogethertoformmore detailedcompositions:
These modelswere createdbyusingthe boolean>subtract tool on differentcombinationsof
cylindersandsquarestocreate the depressedareasof the model.
I also hadto 'cleanup' some unnecessarypolygonsthathadbeencreatedinthe process(because
booleanscalculate the polygonsandpointsof all objectsused).Todothis,I usedthe knife tool while
havingcertainpolygonsselectedinthe modelertoseparate some partsof a polygonfromthe rest,
creatinga separate polygonthatI can delete withoutundoingthe restof the model.

Andthese pieceswere designedforceilingorwall decoration, mostnotableof whichisthe red
colouredpanel withawhite circle inthe centre, intendedasaceilinglight. The white areahasa
surface that waseditedinthe surface editormenutoincrease its'luminosity'.Whatthismeansis
that whenitisrendered, itappearstobe glowingregardlessof the amountof lightthatan engine is
calculatingasbeingcast againstit.
Thisaltar isactuallya model thatis made up of nine pieces, withfiveunique modelstotal (the altar,
the loweredges, the lowercorners, andthe centre). The lowerpieceswere made usingsimilar
techniquestothe wall panels –knife tool tocut off the corners, followedbybevel.
To get the depressionineachmodel toline upappropriately,Iactuallyplacedthe firstpiece Imade
intoa separate layerof the modellingprogramsothatI couldsee it andcompare to the currentone.
Once the collectionof modelswascomplete,Icouldexportthe altaras a single model, andduring
exportthe individual piecesare treatedasif theywere asingle model, asinthisimage.

Most of thisbell wascreatedusingthe bevel tool, includingthe cordontop (thoughitbeganfroma
separate discpolygon).
The gemsare notable because theyare notonlyeachunique andcreatedusingdifferentmethods,
theyare alsoall translucent, andhave a small space thattheyare enclosedin. The methodsIused
are as follows:
- Blue gem: Sphere creationtool.
- Greengem:Box creationtool,followedbyincreasingthe numberof pointsonthe
object,whichIthenmanuallymovedaroundintoa‘diamond’shape,withthe translate
tool.
- Yellowgem:Box creationtool,bevel.
- Redgem:Box creationtool,followedbymanuallymovingaroundthe points,followed
by bevel.
So that the gemswouldn’tvisiblyclip throughthe bell,Imade tookthe gemsImade andmade them
slightlylargerwiththe size tool, thenusedthe Boolean>subtracttool to create a small space that I
couldplace the normal-sizedgeminto.

The onlynewtechnique showninthismodel of abookisthe one I usedto make the book itself,
whichwasrelativelycomplicated.Ifirstcreatedacylinderobject,whichwouldmake the spine of the
book.ThenI useda box objectand the Boolean> subtracttool to cut the cylinderinhalf.Once Ihad
half of the cylinder,Ilineditupwithabox model to create the coverof the book.
Once I had the cover,I neededtocreate a space for the ‘pages’to go.To do this,I createda smaller
box and a smallercylinder, andusedthe Boolean>subtract tool to create an emptyspace inthe
coversectionof the model, andthenmade a smallerbox toplace inside thatspace.

Making thiscandle requiredatechniquethatIhad usedquite a lotina previous3dmodelling
project,whichisthe use of sub-patching.The applicationandresultof thistechnique issimple:once
it isactivated,itmakesanyselectedpolygons‘round’,whichIusedtogetthe illusionof acurved
surface at the tip of the candle, althoughitdidrequire some modificationtocoordinationof the
points,because sometimesthe polygonwouldappearwarped.
Thiscandle isalso usedtocreate anothermodel;thatof a candelabra, inwhichI usedthe rotate and
size toolstocreate variance in the appearance of the model.
8. LuisVazquez
To make thiscross, I useda box model asthe base, increaseditsnumberof points, andmodifiedthe
pointsintothe cross shape, followedbyusingthe bevel tool tocreate the raisedsurfaces.
I alsouseda previouslyunusedtool tomake thismodel;the mirrortool. The mirror tool makesa
copy of all values fora model’spoints, surfaces, andpolygons, andthen‘mirrors’themonthe
opposite site of aparticularaxis – whichin thiscase was the x-axis.
9. LuisVazquez
The body of thispewwas mostlymade withthe create disctool, thoughI also usedthe Boolean>
subtract tool to create the flatareas, and there are twosectionsof the model where Ihave used
sub-patching,whichare the large circularobjectthatformsthe ‘seat’,andthe line thatrunsalong
the lengthof the pew’sback.
The final modelsIneedare some stairs – of whichI have twovariantsplanned.Thisone isthe more
traditional ‘step’,whichImade usingthe box tool, withadditionalpoints.Since asimple box was
somethingof asimple model tomake,Ichose to include anareaof ‘felt’onthe stepthatruns along
the middle.
10. LuisVazquez
To dothis,I tookone of the pointsandmovedit downandfurtherintothe object, selectedthe area
I wantedthe differentsurface tobe,andappliedsub-patchingtothatarea.
Finally,Iproducedthis‘ramp’style stair.Muchlike the otherstairmodel,Iuseda base box model
and increasedthe numberof points, thoughwiththismodel,Iusedthe beveltool tocreate the
slightdepressionsintothe model.
The ramp is meantto imitate the rampsthatare oftenseeninairportsandaeroplanes, whichhave
builtinlightsinthe floor,soI includedsmall objectsthatImade usingthe sphere creationtool. The
spheresalsohave asurface appliedtoitwhichhas a highlevel of luminosity.
