Stuart Absolutism and the English Civil WarTom Richey
These slides were created to accompany a historical lecture on Stuart England, focusing on the reigns of James I and Charles I as well as the English Civil War and Cromwell's Protectorate.
Split into two lessons (1 - researching evidence & putting it into evidence sheets; class split into groups. 2 - trial and aftermath) My first proper attempt at putting stuff together myself - apologies for stolen parts.
Hobbes argued that all humans are by nature equal in faculties of body and mind (i.e., no natural inequalities are so great as to give anyone a "claim" to an exclusive "benefit"). From this equality and other causes in human nature, everyone is naturally willing to fight one another: so that "during the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called warre; and such a warre as is of every man against every man". In this state every person has a natural right or liberty to do anything one thinks necessary for preserving one's own life; and life is "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short"

Excerpts from Locke’s Two Trea3se on Government, 1690
Man being born…with a title to perfect freedom, and…all the rights and privileges of the law of
nature…hath by nature a power, not only to preserve his property, that is, his life, liberty and
estate, against the injuries and attempts of other men; but to judge of, and punish the breaches of
that law in others, as he is persuaded the offence deserves, even with death itself, in crimes
where the heinousness of the fact, in his opinion, requires it…
IF man in the state of nature be so free, as has been said; if he be absolute lord of his own person
and possessions, equal to the greatest, and subject to no body, why will he part with his freedom?
Why will he give up this empire, and subject himself to the dominion and control of any other
power? To which it is obvious to answer, that though in the state of nature he hath such a right,
yet the enjoyment of it is very uncertain, and constantly exposed to the invasion of others…
…But because no political society can be, nor subsist, without having in itself the power to
preserve the property, and… punish the offences of all those of that society; there, and
there only is political society, where every one of the members hath quitted this natural
power…And thus all private judgment of every particular member being excluded, the
community comes to be umpire, by settled standing rules, indifferent, and the same to all
parties…
Those who are united into one body, and have a common established law and judicature to
appeal to, with authority to decide controversies between them, and punish offenders, are in civil
society one with another.
…whenever the Legislators endeavour to take away, and destroy the Property of the People, or
to reduce them to Slavery under Arbitrary Power, they put themselves into a state of War with the
People, who are thereupon absolved from any farther Obedience…Whensoever therefore the
Legislative shall… endeavour to grasp themselves, or put into the hands of any other an
Absolute Power over the Lives, Liberties, and Estates of the People; By this breach of Trust they
forfeit the Power, the People had put into their hands…and it devolves to the People…
What I have said here, concerning the legislative in general, holds true also concerning the
supreme executor…He acts also contrary to his trust, when he either employs the force, treasure,
and offices of the society to corrupt the representatives, and gain them to his purposes; or openly
pre-engages the electors, and prescribes to their choice, such, whom he has, by solicitations,
threats, promises, or otherwise, won to his designs: and employs them to bring in such, who have
promised beforehand what to vote, and what to enact. Thus to regulate candidates and electors,
and newmodel the ways of election, what is it but to cut up the government by the roots, and
poison the very fountain of public security?
…Revolutions happen not upon ever ...

An astonishing, first-of-its-kind, report by the NYT assessing damage in Ukraine. Even if the war ends tomorrow, in many places there will be nothing to go back to.

Here is Gabe Whitley's response to my defamation lawsuit for him calling me a rapist and perjurer in court documents.
You have to read it to believe it, but after you read it, you won't believe it. And I included eight examples of defamatory statements/

Here is Gabe Whitley's response to my defamation lawsuit for him calling me a rapist and perjurer in court documents.
You have to read it to believe it, but after you read it, you won't believe it. And I included eight examples of defamatory statements/
3. “I would know by what power I am called hither
... I would know by what authority, I mean
lawful; there are many unlawful authorities in
the world; thieves and robbers by the high-ways
... Remember, I am your King, your lawful King,
and what sins you bring upon your heads, and
the judgement of God upon this land. Think
well upon it, I say, think well upon it, before
you go further from one sin to a greater ... I have
a trust committed to me by God, by old and
lawful descent, I will not betray it, to answer a
new unlawful authority; therefore resolve me
that, and you shall hear more of me.”
4. In other words…
By saying this it proves how much Charles believed in
the Divine Rights of the King like his father
- “Remember, I am your King, your lawful King”
God gave him the right to rule
- “I have a trust committed to me by God”
Wanted absolute monarchy
He did not like the parliament imposing rules and
telling him what to do
- “…I will not betray it, to answer a new unlawful
authority”
5. About Charles I
Succeeded James VI and I in 1625
Not popular at all
Needed lots of money for himself
- Imposed lots of taxes such as ship money, tonnage
and poundage etc without parliament approval
Court of Star Chamber
- He could basically do whatever he wanted here
- Tried people spoke out against him (Seditious libel)
6. About Charles I cont…
Lost patience with Parliament
- Attacked them
- Beginning of Civil War
Charles defeated by Parliament after 7 years
Oliver Cromwell takes over
Executed Charles for treason after Trial of the King in
1649
More about Charles I: Conrad’s post and Julie’s post
7. Today…
Though absolute monarchy doesn’t exist anymore ,
many countries are still led by dictators
Leaders who like Charles still believe it is their
birthright to rule
- “I have a trust committed to me by God, by old
and lawful descent” –Charles I
- Jonathan’s blog about Charles and dictatorship
One example is North Korea’s Kim family
When Kim Jong-il died on Dec 17th 2011 the title of
supreme leader went to his son Kim Jong-un
8. Today cont…
He has control and command of all North Korea’s
military (KPA)
Direct authority and command over the KPA’s other
security organizations (Ministry of State Security,
Ministry of People’s Security, Guard Command,
country’s civilian reserve forces etc)
Basically …. the dictator of a country by birthright
People in this country have limited freedom of speech
and say over their rights
9. In Conclusion
Just because you have absolute power doesn’t mean
you can do whatever you want
If you anger enough people they will rebel
