Neoliberalism vs. Biopolitics
Under the reign of neoliberalism, the United States seems
to have been changed to being anti-democratic than it has ever
been witnessed before
. Neoliberalism has been introduced to serve as the reference
and pillar
for all consultation and basis of matter of politics, economic
state of the nation, government, rationality and even morally by
the article. The article “Beyond the biopolitics of disposability:
Rethinking neoliberalism in the new gilded age” seeks to
establish the effects brought about by use of biopolitics to
realign corporate power though the market forces. Biopolitics
has brought more harm than good in the intersection and
existence of race and class. New suffering has been experienced
with the reigning bio political systems.
Foucault
describes biopolitics as a technology of power that has been
turned on the citizens, his
article discusses the negative aspect of biopolitics revealing the
darker side that is less explored by such philosophers.
Biopolitics has been used a tool for using rules to control
people without the rightful consideration of their views and
opinions on various matters. Biopolitics has, indeed, brought a
new element in the addressing of issues at the judicial systems
and disciplinary techniques in the United States.
The author
, however, notes that the understanding of the term is critical.
Some
have relied on various meanings of biopolitics that have been
misleading to their own detriment. One of the results of the
biopolitical system is the objectification of human beings. More
so the women which has been on lines of discrimination
. The thin line has been crossed of viewing people for their
worth and who they are and objectification into some sorts of
machines has been observed especially in the corporate world.
Biopolitical savage
in this manner becomes a tool of savageness rather than a tool
for reform and to help enact human rights. Human life process
has been mismanaged explains the author and has led to the
trampling with the roles of citizens more so that lay man who is
not in any leadership role.
Their knowledge and skills have been taken advantage of and
power has been misused by those in the leadership roles. The
author calls out for newer action or the eradication of the
biopolitical reigns if it results into chaos rather than prevailing
harmony.
The article discusses concepts of biopolitics with a firm
standing that examines the biopolitical system in the colonial
era and the handling of the matter in the ancient times. The
findings are more negatinge with the hopes of shedding light on
some measures to correct the contemporary phenomena.
Biopolitics brings a border
to politics and human life. This is a gray area that should be
treated with respect, lest
it aggravates and creates chaos in the political system,
governance, domestic and legal dimensions of the state. When
biopolitics is used as a measure to critique and shed bad light
on the government, a lot more harm is caused than good.
The logic of a free market controlling the United States is
depicted with enactment of some of some biopolitical concepts.
This is such as the declaration of value on some non-economic
issues and facets such as human life.
This becomes wrong on so many levels and aspects of human
existence. My view, coincides with that of the author, that upon
hints
of human objectification, biopolitics should be dropped at the
mention of it. Perceiving of human life in economic terms is
inhumane and against human rights.
However, moving away from the negative aspects brought about
by the effects of biopolitics a few positive elements are worth
noticing. Biopolitics has been used to control the population to
avoid instances of overpopulation bringing up measures to
control the birth rates. This is a moral issue and to some extent
a religious one hence carefully handling by the government
being paramount. The rules and regulations put up have to be
humane and respect the mere existence of human life rather than
view population as a political problem or opportunity.

Has it been or not?
Clarify this idea.
What do you mean by this?
This is good but you could make the connection between
neoliberalism and biopolitics more apparent.
Where did he come from?
Whose article? Foucault’s or the article you discuss above. In
fact, you should introduce the author’s name somewhere. If it is
the article above, you need to turn this second clause into its
own sentence.
Use the name.
Who?
This isn’t a complete thought.
Clarify this sentence.
Is this missing an article? You need to define this idea.
Restructure—the idea gets lost.
Why is this important?
What do you mean by this?
How will it do these things?
Restructure.
Clarify.
What you have here has the potential to turn into quite a good
paper. However, you need to continue to work on defining the
scope of your essay—as it stands, you seem to want to talk
about the relationship between biopolitics, neoliberalism,
government, the public sphere, and the private sphere. While all
of these can be discussed, for a 4–6 -page paper, it is just too
much. Indeed, if you choose to discuss all of these things you
will probably end up not being able to either fully explore or
support your ideas. Nevertheless, this is a good start.

What’s the State of a Nation?
Benedict Anderson’s Imagined Communities: Reflections on
the Origins and Spread of
Nationalism articulates that nationalism, or feeling as if one
shares a space or set of beliefs with
another, began during the Industrial Revolution. More
specifically, because of the decline in the
usage of “privileged” languages like Latin, the advent of the
printing press, and the growing
desire to abolish rule by divine right— delegitimizing
monarchies—citizens felt a more direct
connection with their “nation” and fellow citizens. For
Anderson, a “nation” is an imagined
social construct “because the members of even the smallest
nation will never know most of their
fellow members, meet them, or even hear them, yet in the minds
of each lives the image of their
communion” (6). In other words, because a nation is a structure
that is vast and finds its power
and ability to connect people in ideals, border, or languages, all
intangible, imagined elements,
its existence is imaginary. Furthermore, Anderson argues that
nationalism, or an individual’s
and/or community’s sense of attachment or belonging to the
nation, is a positive force; indeed,
by articulating that nationalism “thinks in terms of historical
destinies,” Anderson attaches great
importance to the utopian elements of nationalism (149). As a
result, Anderson argues that the
nation and nationalism are not linked to racism which facilitates
the development of inclusive
nation-states. Such inclusivity, then, demonstrates that the
nation itself should be a force for
good by creating the possibility for multiple modes of personal
and communal attachment and
Voss-Hoynes 2
belonging. Individuals, then, are able to “feel” connected to
other nations in such a manner that
traditional borders and boundaries are, in some respects,
rendered obsolete.
While Anderson’s utopian vision of the nation and nationalism
is one that promotes
unity, the idea fails to take into account national development
as a result of resistance. In other
words, Anderson’s account of the rise of the nation and
nationalism disavows those nations that
grew out of anti-colonial struggles. In the case of a colonized
nation, there are already two
separate understandings of the nation and nationalism that exist
simultaneously. More
specifically, there is the material or formal nation and there is
the spiritual nation, which consists
of a national culture and which is the main site of colonial
resistance before the political battles
with the colonizing force begins. This space, which Partha
Chatterjee discusses in his The Nation
and its Fragments, facilitates the development of language,
modern cultural forms, and
institutions outside of the domain of the colonial State.
Anderson’s Utopian conception of
nationalism and the nation, then, fails to account for how
resistance, which is oftentimes violent,
helps form nations and how this re-defines nationalism. This
nationalism, an ideological product
of violence, both understands the importance of resistance and
creates a space for this form of
resistance.
Originally written in 1983, Anderson’s Imagined Communities
did not have the capability
to trace the role of technology and social media in the
development of the nation and
nationalism. In the wake of the Arab Spring and the Occupy
movement, I will trace the role of
technology and platforms like Facebook and Twitter in unifying
individuals and developing new
models of a nation. For these movements, the nation become a
space that is fleeting which, in
turn, redefines the role of “physical” borders in the 21st
century. As a result, new, borderless
conceptions of the nation and nationalism speak to the idea of a
globalized world.

ASSIGNMENT 3.1
STASIS AND TURN
DUE DATE: Friday, November 18, 2016 by 5 pm.
Email Submission Guidelines:
Please have the subject of your email read “Last Name ENG
106 H1” and
NOTHING else; if you fail to use the proper subject line there
is a good chance
that I will miss your email. Please email me your paper as a
.doc, .rtf, or .pages file—
NO PDFs.
LENGTH: 2 pages double-spaced (must not exceed 3 pages).
NEED HELP?: Send me an email at [email protected] or
schedule a time to meet with me
in my office (Ashe #417-A).
ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES: In this paper, you will first find
a peer-reviewed article that
discusses some aspect of biopolitics or neoliberalism. You
should then summarize the argument
of the published work of academic criticism (article or book
chapter) that you find in class (we will
go over this). After summarizing the argument, you must assess
the piece—what were its strengths
and weaknesses (in terms of its argument, NOT its style)
Finally, as this is the basis for your final
essay, indicate what your intervention or argument will be. This
does not have to come in the form
of a finished thesis; instead, it should be a working thesis that
may (will probably) evolve as we work
through the essays.
Put numerically: 1 page of charitable summary
1 page of analysis/assessment—this INCLUDES your own
argument.
CITATION METHOD: Following whatever guidelines are most
prominent in your field, provide
a “Works Cited”/ “References” page, and cite page numbers in
the paper according to convention.

  • 5. 1 2 Leo Li ENG 106 Professor Kurt-Voss Hoynes Nov. 18, 2016 Neoliberalism vs. Biopolitics Under the reign of neoliberalism, the United States seems to have been changed to being anti-democratic than it has ever been witnessed before . Neoliberalism has been introduced to serve as the reference and pillar for all consultation and basis of matter of politics, economic state of the nation, government, rationality and even morally by the article. The article “Beyond the biopolitics of disposability: Rethinking neoliberalism in the new gilded age” seeks to establish the effects brought about by use of biopolitics to realign corporate power though the market forces. Biopolitics has brought more harm than good in the intersection and existence of race and class. New suffering has been experienced with the reigning bio political systems. Foucault describes biopolitics as a technology of power that has been turned on the citizens, his article discusses the negative aspect of biopolitics revealing the darker side that is less explored by such philosophers.
  • 6. Biopolitics has been used a tool for using rules to control people without the rightful consideration of their views and opinions on various matters. Biopolitics has, indeed, brought a new element in the addressing of issues at the judicial systems and disciplinary techniques in the United States. The author , however, notes that the understanding of the term is critical. Some have relied on various meanings of biopolitics that have been misleading to their own detriment. One of the results of the biopolitical system is the objectification of human beings. More so the women which has been on lines of discrimination . The thin line has been crossed of viewing people for their worth and who they are and objectification into some sorts of machines has been observed especially in the corporate world. Biopolitical savage in this manner becomes a tool of savageness rather than a tool for reform and to help enact human rights. Human life process has been mismanaged explains the author and has led to the trampling with the roles of citizens more so that lay man who is not in any leadership role. Their knowledge and skills have been taken advantage of and power has been misused by those in the leadership roles. The author calls out for newer action or the eradication of the biopolitical reigns if it results into chaos rather than prevailing harmony. The article discusses concepts of biopolitics with a firm standing that examines the biopolitical system in the colonial era and the handling of the matter in the ancient times. The findings are more negatinge with the hopes of shedding light on some measures to correct the contemporary phenomena. Biopolitics brings a border to politics and human life. This is a gray area that should be treated with respect, lest
  • 7. it aggravates and creates chaos in the political system, governance, domestic and legal dimensions of the state. When biopolitics is used as a measure to critique and shed bad light on the government, a lot more harm is caused than good. The logic of a free market controlling the United States is depicted with enactment of some of some biopolitical concepts. This is such as the declaration of value on some non-economic issues and facets such as human life. This becomes wrong on so many levels and aspects of human existence. My view, coincides with that of the author, that upon hints of human objectification, biopolitics should be dropped at the mention of it. Perceiving of human life in economic terms is inhumane and against human rights. However, moving away from the negative aspects brought about by the effects of biopolitics a few positive elements are worth noticing. Biopolitics has been used to control the population to avoid instances of overpopulation bringing up measures to control the birth rates. This is a moral issue and to some extent a religious one hence carefully handling by the government being paramount. The rules and regulations put up have to be humane and respect the mere existence of human life rather than view population as a political problem or opportunity. References Collier, S. J. (2011). Post-Soviet social: neoliberalism, social modernity, biopolitics. Princeton University Press. Giroux, H. A. (2008). Beyond the biopolitics of disposability: Rethinking neoliberalism in the new gilded age. Social Identities, 14(5), 587-620. Has it been or not?
  • 8. Clarify this idea. What do you mean by this? This is good but you could make the connection between neoliberalism and biopolitics more apparent. Where did he come from? Whose article? Foucault’s or the article you discuss above. In fact, you should introduce the author’s name somewhere. If it is the article above, you need to turn this second clause into its own sentence. Use the name. Who? This isn’t a complete thought. Clarify this sentence. Is this missing an article? You need to define this idea. Restructure—the idea gets lost.
  • 9. Why is this important? What do you mean by this? How will it do these things? Restructure. Clarify. What you have here has the potential to turn into quite a good paper. However, you need to continue to work on defining the scope of your essay—as it stands, you seem to want to talk about the relationship between biopolitics, neoliberalism, government, the public sphere, and the private sphere. While all of these can be discussed, for a 4–6 -page paper, it is just too much. Indeed, if you choose to discuss all of these things you will probably end up not being able to either fully explore or support your ideas. Nevertheless, this is a good start. Voss-Hoynes 1 Kurt Voss-Hoynes English 106
  • 10. Dr. Kurt Voss-Hoynes 18 November 2016 What’s the State of a Nation? Benedict Anderson’s Imagined Communities: Reflections on the Origins and Spread of Nationalism articulates that nationalism, or feeling as if one shares a space or set of beliefs with another, began during the Industrial Revolution. More specifically, because of the decline in the usage of “privileged” languages like Latin, the advent of the printing press, and the growing desire to abolish rule by divine right— delegitimizing monarchies—citizens felt a more direct connection with their “nation” and fellow citizens. For Anderson, a “nation” is an imagined social construct “because the members of even the smallest nation will never know most of their fellow members, meet them, or even hear them, yet in the minds of each lives the image of their communion” (6). In other words, because a nation is a structure that is vast and finds its power and ability to connect people in ideals, border, or languages, all intangible, imagined elements,
  • 11. its existence is imaginary. Furthermore, Anderson argues that nationalism, or an individual’s and/or community’s sense of attachment or belonging to the nation, is a positive force; indeed, by articulating that nationalism “thinks in terms of historical destinies,” Anderson attaches great importance to the utopian elements of nationalism (149). As a result, Anderson argues that the nation and nationalism are not linked to racism which facilitates the development of inclusive nation-states. Such inclusivity, then, demonstrates that the nation itself should be a force for good by creating the possibility for multiple modes of personal and communal attachment and Voss-Hoynes 2 belonging. Individuals, then, are able to “feel” connected to other nations in such a manner that traditional borders and boundaries are, in some respects, rendered obsolete. While Anderson’s utopian vision of the nation and nationalism is one that promotes unity, the idea fails to take into account national development
  • 12. as a result of resistance. In other words, Anderson’s account of the rise of the nation and nationalism disavows those nations that grew out of anti-colonial struggles. In the case of a colonized nation, there are already two separate understandings of the nation and nationalism that exist simultaneously. More specifically, there is the material or formal nation and there is the spiritual nation, which consists of a national culture and which is the main site of colonial resistance before the political battles with the colonizing force begins. This space, which Partha Chatterjee discusses in his The Nation and its Fragments, facilitates the development of language, modern cultural forms, and institutions outside of the domain of the colonial State. Anderson’s Utopian conception of nationalism and the nation, then, fails to account for how resistance, which is oftentimes violent, helps form nations and how this re-defines nationalism. This nationalism, an ideological product of violence, both understands the importance of resistance and creates a space for this form of resistance.
  • 13. Originally written in 1983, Anderson’s Imagined Communities did not have the capability to trace the role of technology and social media in the development of the nation and nationalism. In the wake of the Arab Spring and the Occupy movement, I will trace the role of technology and platforms like Facebook and Twitter in unifying individuals and developing new models of a nation. For these movements, the nation become a space that is fleeting which, in turn, redefines the role of “physical” borders in the 21st century. As a result, new, borderless conceptions of the nation and nationalism speak to the idea of a globalized world. Voss-Hoynes 3 Works Cited Anderson, Benedict.
