Ambrose Bierce was an American author, journalist and Civil War veteran. He was born in 1842 in Ohio and had 13 siblings all with names starting with A. Bierce fought in the Civil War and later worked as a journalist and writer, publishing short stories and satires. He is most famous for his darkly ironic works and his dictionary of satirical definitions titled The Devil's Dictionary. Bierce disappeared in 1914 while traveling to Mexico to observe the Mexican Revolution, with his fate and death remaining unknown.
