Definition
• Engineering Mechanics is a branch of the physical sciences that deals with the state of rest or motion of bodies subjected to the action of forces1. It can
be divided into two main subfields: Statics and Dynamics. Statics studies the equilibrium of forces on rigid or deformable bodies, while Dynamics studies
the motion of bodies under the influence of forces2.
• Some of the topics covered in Engineering Mechanics are:
• Resultant and equilibrium of force systems
• Analysis of structures such as trusses, frames, and beams
• Friction and its applications
• Virtual work and energy methods
• Center of gravity and moment of inertia
• Kinematics and kinetics of particles and rigid bodies
• Engineering Mechanics is an important subject for engineering students, as it provides the foundation for many disciplines such as civil, mechanical,
aerospace, and biomedical engineering. It also helps to develop analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as an understanding of the physical
behavior of real-world systems.

What is the difference between statics and dynamics?
Statics
• An example of statics is a book on a shelf that is in equilibrium
with the forces acting on it. The book does not move or rotate,
because the weight of the book is balanced by the normal force
from the shelf, and the friction force from the shelf prevents the
book from sliding.
Dynamics
• An example of dynamics is the motion of a cricket ball that is hit
by a bat. The ball changes its position, speed, and direction as a
result of the force applied by the bat and the air resistance. The
ball also follows a curved path due to the effect of
gravity.
