Fabio Alberto Scanzani is an electrical engineer and teacher of Electronics and Electronic Systems. He has many years of experience as a systems engineering manager for an Italian industrial company. Over the past 20 years, he has led dozens of industrial projects, especially for public administration in Italy and the EU. In 2007, he started his own consulting firm called Studio FAS Engineering Consulting, through which he conducts highly profitable projects in industrial, environmental, energy, and sustainable logistics fields. Recently, he conducted research on using microwave radiometry for environmental analysis and temperature measurement of the lower troposphere. The results of this study were published and presented internationally. In 2014, he won a tender from the City of Rome to help fund
The Future Internet Research and Experimentation - FIRE - current offer to customers from industry (including SMEs) and research includes access to testbed facilities for the purpose of technology, product and service development and testing, as well as knowledge, methods and tools for experimenters and product and service developers. FIRE’s offer in the next years will transform towards a service-oriented framework where the concept of Experimentation as a Service (EaaS) will be central.
This 1-pager gives an insight into what is real and usable today in FIRE project FESTIVAL.

DESIGN OF WIND-EXCITED CIVIL STRUCTURES:
PHENOMENOLOGICAL BASIS, PERFORMANCES ASSESSMENT, SOLUTIONS AND CASE STUDIES
This publication describes some of the research highlights achieved in the focus areas of the Open Smart Spaces spearhead programme 2009–2012: interoperability, smartness, and natural interaction.
Interoperability between devices, software and other resources is essential for the emergence of smart spaces. The different levels of interoperability are discussed together with the importance of a common language for the devices. Semantic interoperability in resource limited devices is also elaborated and an implementation example is given. Context recognition has taken significant technical steps and matured from laboratory to real world applications during last couple of years. This development from recognising user’s physical activity – sitting, walking, running – to more elaborate life pattern analysis is discussed. Development of VTT Node, a wireless sensing and processing device bringing distributed intelligence into industrial condition monitoring is explained. An overview of how existing near field communication antennas and circuits can double for the purpose of wireless charging is given. Finally, the interesting possibilities given by augmented and mixed reality and 3D cameras are introduced.

1. An electrical engineer, Fabio Alberto Scanzani is also a teacher of Electronics and
Electronic Systems and comes from a background of numerous years as systems engineering
manager with an Italian industrial company (the Philips group). Since 1986, first as an officer
in the Italian Army and then as a civilian, he worked in the ICT and industrial Automation
sectors where he explored (playing top-level professional roles) the technical, scientific and
marketing-sales aspects of the field.
Over the past twenty years he has headed the implementation of dozens of industrial
projects, especially in the sphere of supplies to public administration both in Italy and the EU.
In 2007 he set up a professional engineering practice of his own (Studio FAS Engineering
Consulting) and began to practice as a freelancer, rapidly attaining acclaim and prestige in
highly profitable projects within the field of industrial, environmental, energy and sustainable
logistics.
In 2009 he began acting as expertise-consultant to numerous industrial promotion bodies
like the European Commissionʼs DG Connect (FP7 and Horizon 2020) and to several other
organizations and government agencies (ARPA, Ispra, MIUR, MISE, ARTS, Filas, etc.).
Recently, collaborating with the Italian research institute, CNR (Italyʼs National Research
Council), while working on issues of atmospheric science and climate for his doctorate in Geo-
Information, he carried out an in-depth investigation into some aspects of microwave
radiometry applied to environmental analyses: this study addressed the possibility of re-
engineering instruments for measuring the temperature of the lower strata of the troposphere,
availing of innovative-technology solutions and algorithms of a neutral and FuzzyLogic type.
The results of this study have been published and presented at national and international
level. In 2014 he won (coming fourth out of over 60 projects submitted) one of the tenders
issued by the Municipality of Rome City for promoters of technological innovation; this tender
will provide funds to cover the pre-industrialization phase of this temperature profiler.
In recent years, to his commitments as researcher and freelance professional he has
added teaching at a State Technical School where he fosters the development of training
projects and the dissemination of technological innovation (2010 IFTS for environmental
technicians, 2011 photovoltaic, 2012 Integrated Logistics, 2014 Internet of things). In this
particular area has attained substantial standing as an expert trainer and coordinator in the
electronics sector of the industrial-systems milieu. In 2012 he was awarded a Higher Diploma
in Education to teach electronics and systems in State Senior Secondary Technical Institutes.
In 2013 masterminded and co-founded BIP (Best Ideas & Project), a business association
created for the promotion of technological innovation in Italy. In 2014, BIP was among those
recognised by the Italian Ministry of Education in association to take part in its SMART CITIES
projects. In 2014, he oversaw the first Italian IOT (Meet IOT ROME 2014) in collaboration with
some of the sectorʼs major players ; the meeting was held in October 2014 at Romeʼs
Auditorium as part of the now well-known "International Maker Fair ".
For some years, he has been vice-chairman of the Engineering and Environment
Committee of Confindustria SI and a member of the Technological Innovation and
Environmental Boards of the Roman Engineers Association
The Studio FAS company provides consultative services in the field of strategic marketing
planning and assistance in the development and industrial innovation of SMEs. It elaborates
feasibility studies and designs projects covering the provision and supply of advanced
technological, control and supervision systems designed to safeguard environmentally
protected areas and renewable energy instalments within infrastructural and civil public-
services plants.
