1) Spices are plant substances like seeds, fruits, roots, or barks that are used primarily for flavoring, coloring, or preserving food. They are distinguished from herbs which are leaves, flowers, or stems. 2) Many spices have antimicrobial properties which may explain their use in warmer climates with more diseases and for preserving meats. Spices are also sometimes used for medicine, rituals, cosmetics or perfumes. 3) Some spices like mustard seeds, oregano, dill, thyme and rosemary contain antioxidants and compounds that may inhibit cancer growth or prevent normal cell transformation. Turmeric, sage, clove, ginger and chili pepper may also help fight cancer.
