Nepal 2015
Nepal has significant hydropower potential due to its geography and climate, but has developed less than 1.5% of estimated 83,000 MW potential. Key challenges include increasing private investment, rural electrification, and strengthening national capabilities. National policies aim to develop hydropower at low cost to meet domestic demand, encourage private and foreign investment, and extend electricity access across the country in an environmentally sustainable way. Targets are set to provide tangible water benefits to communities in the short, medium, and long term through integrated management of water resources.
Build Back Better: Public Transport and COVID-19 Recovery
Public transport systems around the world are facing financial crisis due to sharply reduced ridership brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Ridership is down 50-90% in many areas. The author outlines a 3 stage process for recovery: 1) social distancing with reduced services, 2) a transition period with gradually increasing demand, and 3) developing a new configuration with new revenue sources, infrastructure investment, and fleet modernization. Significant government support is needed to preserve jobs and operations during this difficult time in order to avoid system collapse and encourage use of more sustainable transport options for recovery.

The REN21 Renewables Global Status Report (GSR) provides an annual look at the tremendous advances in renewable energy markets, policy frameworks and industries globally.
Each report uses formal and informal data to provide the most up-to-date information available. Reliable, timely and regularly updated data on renewables energy are essential as they are used for establishing baselines for decision makers; for demonstrating the increasing role that renewables play in the energy sector; and illustrating that the renewable energy transition is a reality.
This year’s GSR marks 10 years of REN21 reporting. Over the past decade the GSR has expanded in scope and depth with its thematic and regional coverage and the refinement of data collection.
The GSR is the product of systematic data collection resulting in thousands of data points, the use of hundreds of documents, and personal communication with experts from around the world. It benefits from a multi-stakeholder community of over 500 experts. Country information for 133 countries were received and used as basis for GSR2015 preparation.
The country data received is featured in the newly launched REN21 Renewables Interactive Map (www.ren21.net/map).

Speaker background: Lara Esser is Senior Programme Officer at the International Center on Small Hydro Power (IC-SHP) under auspices of UNIDO here in Hangzhou. She has been coordinating the first World Small Hydropower Development Report 2013, which is now available from ‘Small Hydropower World” knowledge platform (www.smallhydroworld.org).
Lara comes from Germany, but has studied and lived in the UK, the Netherlands, France, Austria, Hong Kong, the United States, Thailand and China. Her background is in the field of marine and freshwater biology, species conservation and assessment, ecological management, climate resilience and rural sustainable development. She has a recent Master’s in Environmental Technology from the Centre of Environmental Policy at Imperial College London.

The workshop in Arusha explored the East African/Tanzanian environment for village energy, local case studies, challenges and opportunities, with a view to formulating policy recommendations for policymakers, funders, NGOs and other stakeholders the region. An important part of the workshop, and indeed the whole Smart Villages initiative work programme, was to gather evidence from existing projects that have provided or facilitated sustainable off-grid energy solutions in the developing world.The workshop gathered more than 50 experts, including policymakers, NGOs, off-grid energy entrepreneurs and others to look for solutions to providing energy to villages off the grid.

Topic details: Lara would like to present some of the results of the first World Small Hydropower Development Report (2013) in the context of international sustainable energy goals.
Speaker background: Lara Esser is Senior Programme Officer at the International Center on Small Hydro Power (IC-SHP) under auspices of UNIDO here in Hangzhou. She has been coordinating the first World Small Hydropower Development Report 2013, which is now available from ‘Small Hydropower World” knowledge platform (www.smallhydroworld.org).
Lara comes from Germany, but has studied and lived in the UK, the Netherlands, France, Austria, Hong Kong, the United States, Thailand and China. Her background is in the field of marine and freshwater biology, species conservation and assessment, ecological management, climate resilience and rural sustainable development. She has a recent Master’s in Environmental Technology from the Centre of Environmental Policy at Imperial College London.

REA, ERB, ZESCO through REFit Strategy must support the private sector, individual households to use solar. • ZESCO should let go of the energy markets and allow other organizations like REA to create their own customers and grid of renewables • It is recommended that the indicator be schools all across the nation in reference to those that are not connected to the grid. • Track renewable energy funds to implementation phase and involve all stakeholders.

CONCLUSION • Energy Storage technologies need to be promoted across the nation • Energy efficiency technologies from generation pumps to household pumps • This power crisis is a very huge opportunity to put out the policies that support renewables and efficiency at both national and private household level • Solar energy installation & awareness programs need to be effective to help reduce the 70% biomass dependence(CIFOR, 2016); REDD+ Project, 2016) • The Refit Program needs to be implemented at a faster rate before the country experiences good rainy season, worry is financial support might be terminated without national power crisis • If hydro power fails and the policy solution is to increase diesel power production and energy imports, instead of establishing solar mini electric plants to meet the demand of electricity in households, then at present • Zambia is not on the right path to Energy Sustainability Achievement.
