Europe could improve its growth prospects and create 500,000 to 1.1 million net additional jobs in 2030 through auto sector innovation. Increased technology to cut fuel consumption would allow the EU to reduce its dependence on foreign oil and deliver between €58 and €83 billion a year in fuel savings for the EU economy by 2030. This shift will achieve the double bonus of mitigating climate change and creating a much-needed economic stimulus.
Key findings:
• Jobs are created by increased spending on vehicle technology, but more importantly by a shift in spending away from imported fossil fuels and back towards other areas of the European economy.
• In scenarios in which the Internal Combustion Engine is either optimized or hybridized, the yearly cost of running and replacing the EU car and van fleet is reduced by €36 billion and EU-wide employment increases by 500,000 to 660,000 in 2030. This takes account of jobs lost in the transition, such as in refining.
• In scenarios in which Europe moves rapidly to a fleet of advanced hybrid, battery-electric and fuel-cell vehicles, EU-wide employment increases by 850,000 to 1.1 million in 2030. By 2050, jobs increase by 1.9 million to 2.3 million in all low-carbon scenarios examined.
• The fuel bill for Europe’s car and van fleet is reduced by €58 – 83 billion in 2030 by a shift to low-carbon vehicles, and by €115 – 180 billion in 2050. (excluding taxes and duties)
• While jobs are created and spending on oil imports is reduced in all low-carbon scenarios, CO2 is also cut by between 64 per cent and 97 per cent in 2050. Air quality is significantly improved, with emissions of health-damaging particulates down by 73 – 95 per cent by 2050.
• Demand is reduced for a small fraction of auto sector professions, and some skill shortages also emerge during the transition. The pace of change is likely to allow time for the development of the relevant new skills in Europe, if industry, governments and academic institutions start planning now

Smart charging puts the pedal to the metal on e-mobilityLeonardo ENERGY
Smart charging represents the intersection where decarbonising power and electrifying transport meet. It creates a crucial building block for a sustainable energy system to power electric cars through solar and wind energy. Encouraging consumers to shift electric vehicle charging to hours when the power system is not under stress generates benefits for the grid, the environment and all electricity customers.

Peer-to-peer energy trading using blockchainsLeonardo ENERGY
Rapid penetration of distributed generation technologies, combined with grid constraints, and disillusionment with non-consumer centric business models, is leading many to explore radically different configurations of the energy system. One such model, ‘transactive energy’, focuses on peer-to-peer energy trading with the role of the energy company replaced with a trustless transaction layer based on distributed ledger (blockchain) technologies. The proponents of transactive energy argue that it provides social, environmental, economic, and energy systems benefits. This lecture will provide a broad introduction to the field, before discussing the opportunities and limitations of this approach within the energy transition.
Electrification in the energy transition: towards net-zero emissions by 2050Leonardo ENERGY
The European Green Deal envisions a carbon neutral Europe by 2050. Electrification is a powerful tool that can help catapult Europe’s energy transition forward. Accelerated changes are needed in the power, buildings and transport sectors, but they will fail to emerge without robust policies closely aligned with the decarbonisation goal.
In this webinar, Wouter Nijs of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission and David Farnsworth of RAP delve into the role that electrification plays in different scenarios for meeting Europe’s climate goals.
Energy efficiency: a profit center for companies! Leonardo ENERGY
Investments in energy efficiency not only result in a reduction of energy consumption —the ener-gy benefit— but they also entail non-energy benefits such as improved product quality, reduced production time or improved comfort in sales area. Non-energy benefits significantly improve the business case of energy-efficiency investments in the business sector by raising their strategic character.
Within this context, the aim of this webinar is to discuss a methodology to describe and analyze the industrial non-energy benefits of energy efficiency. Linking energy, operational, strategic and fi-nancial aspects, this new conceptual framework enables to move away from the common view of energy as a commodity (where the only goal is to save kilowatt-hours) to adopt a new perspective on energy and energy services as strategic value for businesses.
This methodology will be further developed and documented by Task 26 Multiple Benefits of Ener-gy Efficiency, a project of IEA Demand Side Management Energy Efficiency Technology Collabora-tion Program, in close collaboration with practitioners, academic researchers and public program-mers. People or Institutions interested by Task 26 are most welcome to contact me.
Multiple benefits will also be discussed in-depth with a panel at this year’s IEPPEC June 7-9 Am-sterdam.

CO2 emissions of vehicles: a broad and persistent problemLeonardo ENERGY
The transport sector has not seen the same decline in greenhouse gas emissions as many other sectors. CO2 emissions from passenger cars and trucks form a persistent problem and policymakers struggle to find effective solutions to meet the goals.
First, there is this ongoing race to the bottom among declared CO2 values with a growing gap with the emissions in real-world use. Second, manufacturers are only responsible for the performance of their cars under idealized circumstances, as measured during vehicle emission tests. Third, the economic and life-style aspects of owning and driving heavy and expensive cars are forces in the opposite direction. And last, the European Union has only limited systems in place for the monitoring and verification of the CO2 emissions of vehicles.
In this presentation, Norbert Ligterink (PhD), senior research scientist at TNO, guides you to understanding the complexity behind this broad and persistent problem.
The PowerMatcher - making the electricity grid smarter - Aldo Eismamfrancis
OSGi Community Event 2013 (http://www.osgi.org/CommunityEvent2013/Schedule)
ABSTRACT
Today’s energy market is rapidly changing. The percentage of renewable energy is growing fast, and more and more energy consumers are also generating energy. However, renewable energy sources, like solar and wind are uncontrollable and not always accurately predictable. To avoid black-outs and other problems, the electricity grid must become smarter.
In this talk I will present the PowerMatcher smart grid concept, and how its rapid adoption is enabled by OSGi and Eclipse technologies, as demonstrated in the Couperus field trial in the Netherlands.
The PowerMatcher is an innovative approach for smart coordination in the electricity grid, a scalable multi-agent system that optimizes distributed generation, storage and use of electrical energy.
In 2012, the development of a reference implementation for PowerMatcher on OSGi was started, and the result is now available under a research license from the newly founded Flexiblepower Alliance Network. The OSGi's service, component and configuration model enable rapid development of PowerMatcher solutions, from simulation to assembly and distributed deployment. Messaging between distributed agents is supported with Eclipse Paho, and a simulation toolkit has been developed using the Eclipse Rich Client Platform.
The first field deployment that is using the new reference implementation for PowerMatcher is the Couperus Smart Grid project, a new housing project with 300 energy efficient apartment homes equipped with an individual heat pump for heating and cooling. The PowerMatcher controls the heat pumps in such a way that it compensates generation imbalance of a wind turbine, within the capacity constraints of the local grid.
Please join us in making the electricity grid smarter!

Integrating renewables and enabling flexibility of households and buildingsLeonardo ENERGY
Demand response is seen as measure to increase the power system flexibility. Recent developments from research projects and pilots pave the way to large scale deployment and commercialization. This webinar will present the potentials of different DR technologies and different national and international approaches and discusses how flexibility of demand is making its way into markets and network operation. IEA-DSM Task 17 addresses the current role and potential of flexibility in electricity demand and supply of systems of energy consuming/producing processes in buildings (residential and commercial) equipped with DER (Electric Vehicles, PV, storage, heat pumps, ...) and their impacts on the grid and markets.
Hosted by KTN, this event brought together the projects that were funded as part of the £30 million UK government funding to support and develop vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies - aiming to enable electric cars and other vehicles to deliver electricity back to the smart grid, to light homes and power businesses.
A great opportunity for local councils, fleet owners (looking to go electric) or those in the Energy and Infrastructure sectors.
The event looked at:

Germany is Europe’s biggest energy consumer. As a large and industrial country with moderate natural endowments, it sets an example of what can be done with a progressive energy policy. Germany leads the charge on renewables, has an ambitious energy efficiency policy, is committed to phasing out nuclear power generation and uses ETS revenues fully for the fight against climate change. However, the future of the German energy transition is rather uncertain. Are energy prices sustainable with the current high taxation rates? How to expand the high-voltage grid to integrate wind generation from the North? What will be the future role of coal and gas? This webinar presentation reviews the most important energy statistics for Germany, focussed on a few highlights of its energy policy and concludes with a series of open discussion points.

This session helps you understand the direction the market is taking and how you should plan your future battery policy.
Batteries are the hot topic of the moment, but so far few are being installed and commissioned at scale across the sector. This is not only a technology issue but a finance problem as at present it is often difficult to make the financial case. This session will not only focus on how battery technology is developing but also on how changes in the electricity codes could increase the income generated by batteries.
Batteries installed in medium to large sites across the country could be used to balance the local and national grid. Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.
