This document proposes a modified differential evolution algorithm (ENMDE) to optimize the operation of hydrothermal power systems while considering constraints. ENMDE improves on conventional differential evolution (CDE) with two modifications: 1) a self-tuned mutation operation to expand the local search area based on solution quality, and 2) a leading group selection technique to maintain a set of dominant solutions. The paper investigates how each modification improves ENMDE over CDE and compares ENMDE to other optimization methods on test cases.
