- 1. Analysis of Music Video Productions – Lyrics Analysis Chase & Status ft. Plan B: Essay One Name of Music Video: End Credits Artist Band: Chase & Status Date Released: Released as a single on the 2nd November 2009 Genre: Drum and Bass – Quick Beats and Snare Drums. The music video begins without any lyrics but has a medium paced acoustic guitar that goes against the usual conventions of a drum and bass song, but with most Drum and Bass songs there are drops, where the music starts of slow but suddenly breaks into the Drum and Bass genre in a matter of seconds. With End Credits this is slightly different where the first verse is sung and then the scene cuts match that of the acoustic guitar which only goes on for a maximum of 2 seconds, but now you already know from watching the quick cuts after them comes the drop. Also as the lyrics “I know, I'll be on my way// To heaven's door” are sung and you can see that Saul's body is actually rising, this is a connotation between the lyrics matching what happens in the video. Again we have the cuts matching those of the beat but this time there is a contrast between Saul's face and Michael Caine's face when the cuts switch between each other. Once again we have another connotation between the lyrics and the music video when he sings, “Dragging me away from heavens door” You can see Saul in the background looking as if he has a rope in his hand and he is dragging/pulling it away from the two people at the right of this shot. Also when we associate people going to heaven we think of those who haven't committed crimes or sins but in this shot the mise on scene is very grimy and dull and the looks like the perfect place to commit a crime, the people on the right may suggest a crime taking place such as the woman being raped or possibly selling her body. Saul could be a connotation for being the 'Devil' and dragging these two people away from heaven and closer to hell with his imaginary rope.
- 2. After this shot we hear some digetic sounds from the film Harry Brown , these are the guns being fired from the male and Harry Brown. The digetic sound begins half way through a verse after the lyrics “I hope...” and before “Somebody's there” The shot just shows a heavily wounded man walking out from the darkness and you can't see what’s behind him. The wounded man then shouts “He's got a gun” which then links to the lyric “Somebody's There” and Harry Brown steps out of the darkness and the gun fire starts. There is a constant reminder of the fact that Saul's body is floating and that he is dead, not only is this shown in the video but also in the lyrics. In the video you see a wide angle shot where he is floating in the air and there is a lamp post beaming light down onto his body this is a symbol for the face that he is traveling to heaven, you often hear the cliché line in hospital series when they say “Don't travel to the light” and here you can see Saul is traveling up to the light. Also the lyrics suggest his death, “When the blood dries in my veins And my, heart feels no more pain I know, I'll be on my way To heaven's door” All these suggest the life sapping out from his body and gives a clear powerful message that he is going to heaven. If you weren’t to watch the video then you would easily be able to establish some kind of setting at which he is rising up to heaven. End credits is a very well structured music video, a lot of the beats are in time with cuts in the music video, this all helps to create a sense of tension and as stated before when it was used at the start of the video it helped to amplify the build up of the song. The lyrics are well attuned to what happens in the music video and it does have in most parts a storyline which does keep the audience interested.
