What is the job outlook like for EMT-Bs?
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for Emergency
Medical Technicians and paramedics have been increasing steadily since 2002, and
employment for these positions is expected to grow faster than the average through 2016. Job
prospects are predicted to be good, particularly in cities such as New York City and with private
ambulance services.
Employment of emergency medical technicians and paramedics is expected to grow by 19
percent between 2006 and 2016, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Full-time
paid EMTs and paramedics will be needed to replace unpaid volunteers, as it is becoming
increasingly difficult for emergency medical services to recruit and retain unpaid volunteers. As
a result, more paid EMTs and paramedics will be needed. Furthermore, as the large baby boom
generation ages and becomes more likely to have medical emergencies, demand will increase for
EMTs and paramedics. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also predicts continued demand for part-time,
volunteer EMTs and paramedics in rural areas and smaller metropolitan areas.
Return to list of Frequently Asked Questions
What do EMT-Bs earn?
An EMT's pay depends on several factors, including the geographical area in which they work,
the agency through which they work, whether they are employed in the private or public sector,
their level of experience, and what level of training they've received.
According to statistics furnished by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, EMT-Bs can
expect to make between $22,000 - $34,000 yearly + overtime and benefits, depending on these
and other factors.
Return to list of Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible to enroll? Do I need a high school diploma/GED/driver's license?
You are eligible to enroll in an EMT-B training course if:
 You are 18 years old, or you will be 18 years old by the end of the month in which you
plan to take the New York State certification exam.
 You can read, write, and communicate in English. All classes and tests are given in
English.
You do NOT need a high school diploma, GED, driver's license, or US citizenship/green card to
enroll in the EMT-B training course and earn your certification. However, these and other
factors may affect your hiring potential.
A candidate with a criminal conviction may attend and complete all of the requirements of the
EMT-B course. However, the candidate will not be permitted to take the NYS certification
exam until the DOH has reviewed the circumstances of the conviction(s) and made a
determination that the candidate does not demonstrate a risk or danger to patients. For more
