3. For almost every writer a different definition of development exists
Important to first distinguish between:
a. Development as a state or condition-static (motionless,
showing little changes, stationary)
b. Development as a process or course of change-
dynamic (always active, changing, energetic)
3
4. refers to progressive or positive societal
transformation and advancement (social aspect)
refers to activities and processes where useful
materials, devices, gadgets, systems or methods are
derived or produced from the findings of researches
(technological aspect which is directly linked to research)
4
5. Development is not purely an economic phenomenon but rather a multi-
dimensional process involving reorganization and reorientation of entire
economic AND social system
Development is a process of improving the quality of all human lives
with three equally important aspects. These are:
5
6. 1. Raising peoples’ living levels, i.e. incomes and consumption, levels
of food, medical services, education through relevant growth processes
2. Creating conditions conducive to the growth of peoples’
through the establishment of social, political and economic systems
and institutions which promote human dignity and respect
3. Increasing peoples’ freedom to choose by enlarging the range of
their choice variables, e.g. varieties of goods and services
6
7. Extension refers to the activities
performed which includes:
short-term non-degree courses
refresher or review classes
seminars
conferences
special training or continuing
education programs
demonstration
techno-forum
exhibits
seed and animal dispersal
experts pool services
special development
projects.
7
8. Extension program is an activity where an individual can experience a
different (from their usual) way of learning
More of interaction with people in a community showing kindness and
caring or to help out those who are less fortunate
helps in cultivating hidden personality of an individual, like, leadership
skills, public speaking, self-confidence, etc.
The development of community is a dynamic process involving all segments of the
locality, e.g. youth population.
8
9. The key component to this process is found in the creation and
maintenance of channels of interaction and communication among diverse
local groups that are otherwise directed toward their more individual
interests
Developing a community with greatest necessity to get some assistance
from different agencies like academic institutions is an act of fulfilling the
mission of helping people to uplift not only the standards of living of those
deprived but it would also provide greater impact to the character and
values of the students and employees who take part on all worthy
undertakings
Since ISPSC is a learning institution which has an integrated educational
institution, may we all take part in pursuing its goal – to extend
development to the community 9
10. Different kinds of activities in different areas
coastal clean-up
environmental clean-up
donations and feeding program
micro financing to elevate the economic status of the beneficiaries
This community extension helps community their needs to become more
productive and capable of making intelligent decisions for the improvement
and development of their socio-economic well-being
10
11. works through self-support, self-reliance and self-sustaining
principles. There should be intended efforts to plan programs and services
that are community based through people‟s participation, taking into
consideration the changing needs of the society and the individual
to lend a hand to the needy and to make a change in their lives through the
help of the community extension volunteers
11
12. Gonzales and Maghamil noted that the extension service
in the Philippine has been implemented during Spanish
era, though it was organized into national system in 1952.
Israel, Harder and Brodeur defined community extension
program as “comprehensive set of activities that are
intended to bring about a sequence of outcomes among
targeted clients”.
112
13. They clarify that a program is more than a single
workshop or activity. Among other things, Extension
programs are characterized by:
1. a focus on the needs of the target audience,
2. the intent to affect participant learning and behavior
outcomes,
3. multiple activities that are comprehensive in nature, and
4. presence of a formal evaluation.

25. “An IEC materials cannot be effective alone”. It needs to have
interaction to the recipients.
Need assessment before developing an IEC
Provides important information about your target populations and the
kind of materials people will respond to
e.g. ethnically diverse in context, or where people are less literate, you
will want to use highly visualize materials to reduce the need for text
253
26. Some materials are developed within a particulalr community
context
they may find ready acceptance in another community if
introduced
engaging the right members of the community in identifying
materials will work and save time and money
hence, most effective materials are those that are created in
collaboration with target population
263
27. use range of materials, activities, and approaches as part of an IEC
campaign
include posters and other visuals in public places to promote social
awareness and community change
some approaches include:
Printed materials
Mass media
Giveaways
Community awareness events
Innovative ideas
273
28. printed materials include:
brochures
Posters
Wall calendars
Billboards
Advertisements (posted on public transport vehicles, etc)
Murals
Desktop flip charts (for small group and one-on-one education)
Other materials
