P I X T U R • 1 9
grew up. I played baseball, foot-
ball, & hockey pretty much my
whole life and I think when I was
10 I had planned on being a foot-
ball player at Florida State Univer-
sity by the time I was 20. We see
how that worked out..
WHAT’S THE MOST INTERESTING ASPECT OF MUSIC
PHOTOGRAPHY FOR YOU?
The most interesting aspect of
music photography is going into
a different venue and finding the
great shots. I love exploring dif-
ferent venues and finding great
spots to take photos. The best
photos are not always just from
the photo pit or being on stage.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THIS JOB?
WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART OF IT?
What I enjoy most about the
job is traveling around with all
my friends. We get to go to a
lot of cool places that I probably
wouldn’t make it to if I wasn’t
traveling with them. The hardest
part is probably being away from
family and my girlfriend. My fam-
ily is really close and being away
can really suck sometimes.
WHEN SHOOTING A SHOW, DO YOU PROCESS TO A
SPECIFIC ‘MENTAL’ PREPARATION BEFOREHAND?
DO YOU HAVE PARTICULAR PLANS IN MIND BEFORE
ACTUALLY GETTING THERE?
Most of the time I have checked
out the venue and have a good
idea of where I want to try to
shoot from during the show. But
once the room is packed with
people situations change and
you have to be able to go with it.
I normally have shots in mind that
I look to take and if I miss it that
night I’ll try again the next night.
I like to think of my job as getting
the shots that no one else has.
HOW DO YOU WORK ON THE WHOLE EDITING PART
OF YOUR PHOTOS BEFORE ANY PUBLICATION?
For most of the images I take
on tour I briefly edit them and
send them to all the guys. I don’t
spend too much time editing
each individual image. If I do
plan on spending a bit more time
editing if its a bit more important
I will edit, then leave it for a few
hours or a day and come back
to look it. Sometimes when you
stare at an image too long you
will come back and be like “that’s
too blue or too red.”
NOW THAT YOU STARTED TOURING QUITE EXTEN-
SIVELY, HOW DO YOU GET READY FOR SUCH A TRIP?
WHAT DO YOU BRING WITH YOU?
To get ready for a trip I mostly
just throw all my gear in my big
Pelican case, pack a few clothes
and I’m off. Nothing really crazy.
Sometimes I’ll rent a lens to bring
with me. Ya know, the usual stuff.
IT MUST ALSO REQUIRE A LOT OF ORGANIZATION
DURING THE PROCESS, HOW DOES YOUR DAILY
ROUTINE ON TOUR LOOKS LIKE? HOW WOULD YOU
DESCRIBE A TYPICAL VINCE DWYER DAY ON TOUR?
My daily routine with The Word
Alive is wake up and get a Star-
bucks with Tony Pizzuti cause
we’re some basic bitches. Then
help our crew load in all the
gear for the band. Setup merch
because I also do merch for The
Word Alive. Then try to find
some cool spots to do a shoot
with some of the guys from the
tour package. This is one of my
favorite times of the day. I basi-
cally find a spot inside or around
the venue and grab who ever is
around to take some portraits.
By this time doors are normally
opening so I’ll man the merch
table and edit as many photos as
I can until The Word Alive plays.
After they’re done playing and
everyone is gone we load every-
thing up, go grab a couple beers
then take off for the next show.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING PHOTOG-
RAPHERS WILLING TO MAKE A CAREER AS MUSIC
PHOTOGRAPHERS? HOW TO GET STARTED?
For aspiring music photographers
my advice is shoot as many shows
as you can and make friends. If
you need a photo pass email, fb,
instagram message whoever you
can asking for a pass. You having
nothing to lose by asking, I prom-
ise you of that....
DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECTS
OUTSIDE OF MUSIC?
I work closely with a clothing
company called Overthrow
Clothing. A good friend of mine
started this clothing company
and I learned a lot by doing pho-
tographing his products and
events. A lot of projects while I’m
home revolve around this com-
pany. You can find my photos for
1 8 • P I X T U R
HOW DID YOU END UP IN MUSIC PHOTOGRAPHY?
CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR STORY?
I bought my first DSLR when I
was 21 years old. A good friend
of mine was getting really into
photography and I thought it was
cool so I went out and bought
a Canon 7D. My friend started
shooting ASU football games for
the school newspaper so he got
me a job doing basically the same
thing. We would go shoot foot-
ball games and split time using a
300mm 2.8 lens he rented on the
newspapers budget and just run
around the field looking for great
shots. At first I was terrible and
honestly didn’t belong on the
field. But, over time I got pretty
good at it and start pumping out
some quality photos.
I love shooting action sports.
You get a whole different feel
for the game when you’re down
on the sidelines and can feel
the emotion and physicality of
it all. I am also a huge college
football fan so that was the best
job I could ask for at the time.
Although I never wanted to, I
shit together and making sure
my work was cool with me leav-
ing. When the tour came through
Phoenix I met the guys there and
the rest is sort of history.
WHERE DID YOUR 10 YEAR-OLD SELF SEE VINCE
DWYER 10 YEARS LATER?
My ten year old self definitely saw
myself as being an athlete when I
started shooting some different
stories for the newspaper the fol-
lowing year. This is what sort of
made me learn to go into a situ-
ation and find good images. Be-
ing thrown in different situations
I believe is the best way to learn
photography. Constantly shoot-
ing different situations makes
you think differently and learn on
the fly. Like with anything if you
don’t push yourself and get out
of your comfort zone you don’t
learn anything new.
A little over two years after get-
ting my first job as a photogra-
pher I was approached by Daniel
Shapiro about possibly coming
out for a week on Warped Tour
2014 to shoot his band The Word
Alive. I said “Hell Yeah” what an
opportunity to tour with a ba-
dass band and take some photos.
So I think the next day I went to
their practice space and hung
out while they practiced their
set. I hadn’t really known anyone
in the band except Daniel who I
have known since we were like
13-14 years old and Tony who I
had done a couple quick photo-
shoots with for Overthrow Cloth-
ing. Like one day before Warped
Tour started I get another call
from Daniel asking if I would want
to come out for the entire tour.
Of course I said yeah… Travel
around and take photos for a liv-
ing I think is any photographers
dream. I didn’t want to quit my
job so I stayed home for the first
week of the tour getting all my

Constitution’s ability to evolve along with
the nation’s consciousness. In that service,
the court itself “has recognized that new
insights and societal understandings can
reveal unjustified inequality within our
most fundamental institutions that once
passed unnoticed and unchallenged.”
For gays and lesbians who have waited
so long for the court to recognize their
relationships as equal to opposite-sex
relationships, it was a remember-where-
you-were-when-it-happened mo-
ment.
Addressing what he called “the
transcendent importance of mar-
riage,” Justice Kennedy wrote that
“through its enduring bond, two
persons together can find other
freedoms, such as expression,
intimacy, and spirituality. This is
true for all persons, whatever their
sexual orientation. There is dignity
in the bond between two men or
two women who seek to marry
and in their autonomy to make
such profound choices.”
Justice Kennedy’s focus on dignity and
equality has been central to his majority
opinion in each of the court’s three earlier
gay rights cases. In 1996, the court held
that states cannot deny gays, lesbians
and bisexual people legal protection from
discrimination. In 2003, it held that states
cannot ban consensual sexual relations
between people of the same sex. And in
2013, it struck down the heart of a federal
law defining marriage as between one
man and one woman.
In Friday’s ruling, Justice Kennedy empha-
sized the dignity and equality not only of
same-sex couples, but of their families and
children. “Without the recognition, stabil-
ity, and predictability marriage offers,” he
wrote, the children of these couples “suf-
fer the stigma of knowing their families
are somehow lesser.”
President Obama, who opposed same-
sex marriage in his first presidential cam-
paign but announced in 2012 that he had
changed his mind, said the decision “af-
firms what millions of Americans already
believe in their hearts:When all Americans
are treated as equal, we are all more free.”
And yet, in the midst of all the hard-earned
jubilation surrounding the decision, it was
difficult not to think of the people who
did not live to see this day.
People like John Arthur, who died in Oc-
tober 2013, only months after he married
his partner of more than 20 years, Jim
Obergefell, on the tarmac of Baltimore-
Washington International Airport. They
lived in Cincinnati, but Ohio would not
let them marry; voters there had passed a
constitutional ban on same-sex marriage
in 2004. As Mr. Arthur lay on a stretcher,
dying of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, he
and Mr. Obergefell took a private medical
jet to Maryland, where same-sex marriage
is legal. They were married in a brief cer-
emony and then flew home.
When Ohio officials refused to put Mr.
Obergefell’s name on his husband’s death
certificate, he sued. Last November, the
United States Court of Appeals for the
Sixth Circuit ruled against him and other
couples challenging bans in Michigan,
Kentucky and Tennessee. Same-sex mar-
riage, the court said, is a “social issue” for
voters, and not the courts, to decide. Fri-
day’s decision reversed that ruling.
The humane grandeur of the majority’s
opinion stands out all the more starkly
in contrast to the bitter, mocking small-
mindedness of the dissents, one each by
Chief Justice John Roberts Jr., and Justices
Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito Jr. and An-
tonin Scalia. The chief justice compared
the ruling to some of the most notorious
decisions in the court’s history, includ-
ing Dred Scott v. Sandford, the 1857 rul-
ing holding that black people could not
be American citizens and that Congress
could not outlaw slavery in the territories;
and Lochner v. New York, a 1905 case that
is widely rejected today as an example of
justices imposing their own preferences
in place of the law.
He invoked the traditional understanding
of marriage, which he ascribed to, among
others, Kalahari bushmen, the Carthagin-
ians and the Aztecs. But Justice Kennedy
had a ready reply: “The limitation of mar-
riage to opposite-sex couples may long
have seemed natural and just, but its in-
consistency with the central meaning of
the fundamental right to marry is
now manifest.”
Justice Scalia mocked the ruling
as a “judicial Putsch” and a threat
to American democracy. “This is
a naked judicial claim to legisla-
tive — indeed, super-legislative
— power,” he wrote. “A system of
government that makes the peo-
ple subordinate to a committee of
nine unelected lawyers does not
deserve to be called a democracy.”
But that rant is wholly wrong. In
American democracy, the judi-
cial branch is the great bulwark
against a majority’s refusal to recognize
a minority’s fundamental constitutional
rights. As Justice Kennedy wrote, “An indi-
vidual can invoke a right to constitutional
protection when he or she is harmed,
even if the broader public disagrees and
even if the legislature refuses to act.”
As gratifying as Friday’s ruling is, remem-
ber that equality won by a single vote.
And within a matter of minutes after the
ruling, there was resistance by some offi-
cials around the country. Louisiana’s attor-
ney general, James Caldwell, said his state,
one of 13 that still bans same-sex
(continued on page 32)
“As gratifying as
Friday’s ruling is,
remember that
equality was won
by a single vote.

A Profound Ruling Delivers Justice
on Gay Marriage
T
o the list of landmark Supreme
Court decisions reaffirming
the power and the scope of
the Constitution’s guarantee
of equal protection under the law — from
Brown v. Board of Education to Loving v.
Virginia to United States v. Windsor — we
can now add Obergefell v. Hodges.
In a profound and inspiring opinion ex-
panding human rights across America,
and bridging the nation’s past to its pres-
ent, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote:“The
right to marry is a fundamental right in-
herent in the liberty of the person,
and under the Due Process and
Equal Protection Clauses of
the Fourteenth Amend-
ment it states couples of
the same sex may not
be deprived of that
right and that liberty.”
As news of the ruling came out on
Friday morning, opponents of same-sex
marriage struggled to fathom how the
country they thought they understood
could so rapidly pass them by. But, in fact,
the court’s decision fits comfortably with-
in the arc of American legal history.
As Justice Kennedy explained, the Consti-
tution’s power and endurance rest in the

A Tribute to Two Sisters
Inniswood Metro Gardens was once the 37-
acre estate of sisters Grace and Mary Innis,
who enjoyed gardening and wildlife obser-
vation respectively. The Innis sisters’ desire
to preserve and enhance their gardens and
woodlands for the enjoyment of all people re-
sulted in the generous donation of their home
and property to Franklin County Metro Parks
in 1972.
To honor the memory of Grace and Mary In-
nis, Metro Parks opened the 2.8-acre Sisters’
Garden in 2002. Designed to celebrate the
complexity of nature and the inquisitiveness
of childhood, The Sisters’ Garden aspires “to
nurture the nature of the child in everyone”.
Inniswood Garden Society
Inniswood Metro Gardens is a facility of the
Franklin County Metro Parks. Operation and
maintenance funds are provided by the District,
however, continued growth and development
are contingent upon gifts from private citizens
and philanthropic organizations.
The Inniswood Garden Society was created in
1984 to assist the Franklin County Metro Parks in
the growth and development of Inniswood Met-
ro Gardens in a manner that is consistent with
the goals and philosophies of the park district.
Additionally, the Inniswood Garden Society as-
sists with the promotion of Inniswood by spon-
soring horticultural programs for its members
and the public.
Society members receive an Inniswood Garden
Society newsletter, a vote at the annual meet-
ing and information on the activities and special
events at Inniswood. Membership in the Society
helps to assure the success of Inniswood and
brings a deep sense of involvement in knowing
that your membership is helping support this
excellent horticultural facility. Your membership
helps the Gardens grow!
Inniswood Volunteers
The purpose of the Inniswood Volunteer Program is
to promote the development of Inniswood Metro
Gardens. All funds raised through projects are used
to operate and promote Inniswood and its educa-
tional and volunteer programs.
Membership is open to anyone wishing to volun-
teer a minimum of 40 hours per year at Inniswood
and willing to pay annual dues of $10.00. Member-
ship in the Inniswood Garden Society is a benefit
for volunteers who volunteer 40 hours or more per
year at Inniswood. The volunteer training program,
held each March, consists of four sessions, which
prepare participants to perform various services
at Inniswood. These services include garden tours
and maintenance, interpretation and assistance
in the library and educational programs. It also in-
cludes a variety of special interest groups support-
ing the Gardens’interest in fern propagation, theme
gardens, container gardening, and wildflowers to
name a few.
Approximately 300 dedicated volunteers help the
Inniswood staff conduct tours and programs, tend
the gardens and participate in an array of activities.
IVI sponsors the annual perennial plant sale the first
weekend of May. All volunteers are encouraged to
attend quarterly meetings held at Innis House that
include a short business meeting and horticultural
program.
Learning and Appreciation
Inniswood offers education in horticulture and
the natural sciences for children and adults.
Dramatic displays of natural and cultivated
gardens, seasonal celebrations and a variety of
programs provide a wealth of information and
enjoyment. The sister’s former home is the site
for education programs, a horticultural refer-
ence collection and staff offices.

Society, or how to become a volunteer,

Original (fruit) Skittles were the first line of
Skittles, produced in 1974. The original fruit
Skittles contained such flavors as strawberry,
orange, lemon, grape, and lime. In 2001, lime was
replaced with green apple as a promotion. In 2013, lime
was moved to the Darkside and permanently replaced
with green apple.
Skittles is a brand of fruit-flavored candies that is produced by
TheWrigleyJr.Company,adivisionofMarsIncoprorated(Inc).It
wasoriginallycreatedcommericallyinEuropein1974.Itbegan
to be imported to the United States during 1979, and in 1982
it become domestically produced in the U.S. Skittles come in
a vast variety of flavors, colors, and even limited editions. In
fact, there are about 30 different types, ranging from fruit,
chocolate, ice cream, smoothie, and even mint. It is the most
popularcandyamongstyouthandthesecondchewycandy,
Starbustsbeingfirst,amongstallpeopleintheUnitedStates.
Around 1994, New York ad agency D’Arcy Masius Benton
& Bowles created the signature Skittles theme, “Taste
the rainbow.” On March 2, 2009, Skittles launched a web-
based marketing campaign where their official website
became a small overlay with options to view different social
media sites in the main area, including its official YouTube
channel, a Facebook profile, and a Twitter account. The move
was debated by people interested in social media. Skittles
has one of the most-”liked” brand pages on Facebook, with
over 25 million followers. The page’s success may be due to its
eccentric posts, such as: “Most cacti are just looking for hugs.”

Introduced with Tropical, Wild Berry was released
in 1989. With flavors like berry punch, melon
berry, raspberry, strawberry, and wild cherry,
Wild Berry was and is still a huge hit. A variant with
fizzy powder (Fizzl’d Fruits*) was released around
2010, but was discontinued due to low sales.
The next variety of Skittles to be introduced
was Tropical, released in 1989. Tropical took us
somewhere warm and sunny with a mixture of two flavors
in one such as pinapple passionfruit, kiwi lime, banana
berry, mango tangelo, and strawberry starfruit.

“CHRISTINA AND CHER,
A STOKE OF genius!”
-The Hollywood Reporter
Ali Rose (Christina Aguilera) is a waitress in her small hometown in Iowa,
with big dreams of being a singer. Being fed up with her job, she quits and
decides to pursue her dream so she moves to L.A. Immediately, she is
capitvated by the fascinating burlesque club ran by Tess (Cher) and her
ex-husband Vince (Peter Gallagher). She is turned away at first, but accepts a
job as a waitress at the club. She develops a friendship with the bartender Jack
(Cam Gigandet), and after some time they begin to kindle a little romance. Ali
eventually replaces both Nikki, an extremely self-centered and jealous
performer (KristenBell), and pregnant Georgia (JulianneHough). The club is in
financial trouble, and is in danger of the very manipulative Marcus (Eric Dane),
though Tess refused to sell to him. When it seems like all hope is lost, they get
the money to pay off the club and remodel it.

I played baseball, foot- ball, & hockey pretty much my whole life and I think when I was 10 I had planned on being a foot- ball player at Florida State Univer- sity by the time I was 20. We see how that worked out.. WHAT’S THE MOST INTERESTING ASPECT OF MUSIC PHOTOGRAPHY FOR YOU? The most interesting aspect of music photography is going into a different venue and finding the great shots. I love exploring dif- ferent venues and finding great spots to take photos. The best photos are not always just from the photo pit or being on stage. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THIS JOB? WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART OF IT? What I enjoy most about the job is traveling around with all my friends. We get to go to a lot of cool places that I probably wouldn’t make it to if I wasn’t traveling with them. The hardest part is probably being away from family and my girlfriend. My fam- ily is really close and being away can really suck sometimes. WHEN SHOOTING A SHOW, DO YOU PROCESS TO A SPECIFIC ‘MENTAL’ PREPARATION BEFOREHAND? DO YOU HAVE PARTICULAR PLANS IN MIND BEFORE ACTUALLY GETTING THERE? Most of the time I have checked out the venue and have a good idea of where I want to try to shoot from during the show. But once the room is packed with people situations change and you have to be able to go with it. I normally have shots in mind that I look to take and if I miss it that night I’ll try again the next night. I like to think of my job as getting the shots that no one else has. HOW DO YOU WORK ON THE WHOLE EDITING PART OF YOUR PHOTOS BEFORE ANY PUBLICATION? For most of the images I take on tour I briefly edit them and send them to all the guys. I don’t spend too much time editing each individual image. If I do plan on spending a bit more time editing if its a bit more important I will edit, then leave it for a few hours or a day and come back to look it. Sometimes when you stare at an image too long you will come back and be like “that’s too blue or too red.” NOW THAT YOU STARTED TOURING QUITE EXTEN- SIVELY, HOW DO YOU GET READY FOR SUCH A TRIP? WHAT DO YOU BRING WITH YOU? To get ready for a trip I mostly just throw all my gear in my big Pelican case, pack a few clothes and I’m off. Nothing really crazy. Sometimes I’ll rent a lens to bring with me. Ya know, the usual stuff. IT MUST ALSO REQUIRE A LOT OF ORGANIZATION DURING THE PROCESS, HOW DOES YOUR DAILY ROUTINE ON TOUR LOOKS LIKE? HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE A TYPICAL VINCE DWYER DAY ON TOUR? My daily routine with The Word Alive is wake up and get a Star- bucks with Tony Pizzuti cause we’re some basic bitches. Then help our crew load in all the gear for the band. Setup merch because I also do merch for The Word Alive. Then try to find some cool spots to do a shoot with some of the guys from the tour package. This is one of my favorite times of the day. I basi- cally find a spot inside or around the venue and grab who ever is around to take some portraits. By this time doors are normally opening so I’ll man the merch table and edit as many photos as I can until The Word Alive plays. After they’re done playing and everyone is gone we load every- thing up, go grab a couple beers then take off for the next show. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING PHOTOG- RAPHERS WILLING TO MAKE A CAREER AS MUSIC PHOTOGRAPHERS? HOW TO GET STARTED? For aspiring music photographers my advice is shoot as many shows as you can and make friends. If you need a photo pass email, fb, instagram message whoever you can asking for a pass. You having nothing to lose by asking, I prom- ise you of that.... DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECTS OUTSIDE OF MUSIC? I work closely with a clothing company called Overthrow Clothing. A good friend of mine started this clothing company and I learned a lot by doing pho- tographing his products and events. A lot of projects while I’m home revolve around this com- pany. You can find my photos for 1 8 • P I X T U R HOW DID YOU END UP IN MUSIC PHOTOGRAPHY? CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR STORY? I bought my first DSLR when I was 21 years old. A good friend of mine was getting really into photography and I thought it was cool so I went out and bought a Canon 7D. My friend started shooting ASU football games for the school newspaper so he got me a job doing basically the same thing. We would go shoot foot- ball games and split time using a 300mm 2.8 lens he rented on the newspapers budget and just run around the field looking for great shots. At first I was terrible and honestly didn’t belong on the field. But, over time I got pretty good at it and start pumping out some quality photos. I love shooting action sports. You get a whole different feel for the game when you’re down on the sidelines and can feel the emotion and physicality of it all. I am also a huge college football fan so that was the best job I could ask for at the time. Although I never wanted to, I shit together and making sure my work was cool with me leav- ing. When the tour came through Phoenix I met the guys there and the rest is sort of history. WHERE DID YOUR 10 YEAR-OLD SELF SEE VINCE DWYER 10 YEARS LATER? My ten year old self definitely saw myself as being an athlete when I started shooting some different stories for the newspaper the fol- lowing year. This is what sort of made me learn to go into a situ- ation and find good images. Be- ing thrown in different situations I believe is the best way to learn photography. Constantly shoot- ing different situations makes you think differently and learn on the fly. Like with anything if you don’t push yourself and get out of your comfort zone you don’t learn anything new. A little over two years after get- ting my first job as a photogra- pher I was approached by Daniel Shapiro about possibly coming out for a week on Warped Tour 2014 to shoot his band The Word Alive. I said “Hell Yeah” what an opportunity to tour with a ba- dass band and take some photos. So I think the next day I went to their practice space and hung out while they practiced their set. I hadn’t really known anyone in the band except Daniel who I have known since we were like 13-14 years old and Tony who I had done a couple quick photo- shoots with for Overthrow Cloth- ing. Like one day before Warped Tour started I get another call from Daniel asking if I would want to come out for the entire tour. Of course I said yeah… Travel around and take photos for a liv- ing I think is any photographers dream. I didn’t want to quit my job so I stayed home for the first week of the tour getting all my P H O T O G R A P H YAT THE TRUMAN GALLERY VINCENT D W Y E R Two-Page Spread Pixtur Magazine Id Ps

In that service, the court itself “has recognized that new insights and societal understandings can reveal unjustified inequality within our most fundamental institutions that once passed unnoticed and unchallenged.” For gays and lesbians who have waited so long for the court to recognize their relationships as equal to opposite-sex relationships, it was a remember-where- you-were-when-it-happened mo- ment. Addressing what he called “the transcendent importance of mar- riage,” Justice Kennedy wrote that “through its enduring bond, two persons together can find other freedoms, such as expression, intimacy, and spirituality. This is true for all persons, whatever their sexual orientation. There is dignity in the bond between two men or two women who seek to marry and in their autonomy to make such profound choices.” Justice Kennedy’s focus on dignity and equality has been central to his majority opinion in each of the court’s three earlier gay rights cases. In 1996, the court held that states cannot deny gays, lesbians and bisexual people legal protection from discrimination. In 2003, it held that states cannot ban consensual sexual relations between people of the same sex. And in 2013, it struck down the heart of a federal law defining marriage as between one man and one woman. In Friday’s ruling, Justice Kennedy empha- sized the dignity and equality not only of same-sex couples, but of their families and children. “Without the recognition, stabil- ity, and predictability marriage offers,” he wrote, the children of these couples “suf- fer the stigma of knowing their families are somehow lesser.” President Obama, who opposed same- sex marriage in his first presidential cam- paign but announced in 2012 that he had changed his mind, said the decision “af- firms what millions of Americans already believe in their hearts:When all Americans are treated as equal, we are all more free.” And yet, in the midst of all the hard-earned jubilation surrounding the decision, it was difficult not to think of the people who did not live to see this day. People like John Arthur, who died in Oc- tober 2013, only months after he married his partner of more than 20 years, Jim Obergefell, on the tarmac of Baltimore- Washington International Airport. They lived in Cincinnati, but Ohio would not let them marry; voters there had passed a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in 2004. As Mr. Arthur lay on a stretcher, dying of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, he and Mr. Obergefell took a private medical jet to Maryland, where same-sex marriage is legal. They were married in a brief cer- emony and then flew home. When Ohio officials refused to put Mr. Obergefell’s name on his husband’s death certificate, he sued. Last November, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ruled against him and other couples challenging bans in Michigan, Kentucky and Tennessee. Same-sex mar- riage, the court said, is a “social issue” for voters, and not the courts, to decide. Fri- day’s decision reversed that ruling. The humane grandeur of the majority’s opinion stands out all the more starkly in contrast to the bitter, mocking small- mindedness of the dissents, one each by Chief Justice John Roberts Jr., and Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito Jr. and An- tonin Scalia. The chief justice compared the ruling to some of the most notorious decisions in the court’s history, includ- ing Dred Scott v. Sandford, the 1857 rul- ing holding that black people could not be American citizens and that Congress could not outlaw slavery in the territories; and Lochner v. New York, a 1905 case that is widely rejected today as an example of justices imposing their own preferences in place of the law. He invoked the traditional understanding of marriage, which he ascribed to, among others, Kalahari bushmen, the Carthagin- ians and the Aztecs. But Justice Kennedy had a ready reply: “The limitation of mar- riage to opposite-sex couples may long have seemed natural and just, but its in- consistency with the central meaning of the fundamental right to marry is now manifest.” Justice Scalia mocked the ruling as a “judicial Putsch” and a threat to American democracy. “This is a naked judicial claim to legisla- tive — indeed, super-legislative — power,” he wrote. “A system of government that makes the peo- ple subordinate to a committee of nine unelected lawyers does not deserve to be called a democracy.” But that rant is wholly wrong. In American democracy, the judi- cial branch is the great bulwark against a majority’s refusal to recognize a minority’s fundamental constitutional rights. As Justice Kennedy wrote, “An indi- vidual can invoke a right to constitutional protection when he or she is harmed, even if the broader public disagrees and even if the legislature refuses to act.” As gratifying as Friday’s ruling is, remem- ber that equality won by a single vote. And within a matter of minutes after the ruling, there was resistance by some offi- cials around the country. Louisiana’s attor- ney general, James Caldwell, said his state, one of 13 that still bans same-sex (continued on page 32) “As gratifying as Friday’s ruling is, remember that equality was won by a single vote. ” Jim Obergefell holding a picture of his late husband, John Arthur (Maddie McGarvey/Washington Post) 25 CURRENT TIMES | JUNE, 2015 A Profound Ruling Delivers Justice on Gay Marriage T o the list of landmark Supreme Court decisions reaffirming the power and the scope of the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection under the law — from Brown v. Board of Education to Loving v. Virginia to United States v. Windsor — we can now add Obergefell v. Hodges. In a profound and inspiring opinion ex- panding human rights across America, and bridging the nation’s past to its pres- ent, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote:“The right to marry is a fundamental right in- herent in the liberty of the person, and under the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amend- ment it states couples of the same sex may not be deprived of that right and that liberty.” As news of the ruling came out on Friday morning, opponents of same-sex marriage struggled to fathom how the country they thought they understood could so rapidly pass them by. But, in fact, the court’s decision fits comfortably with- in the arc of American legal history. The Innis sisters’ desire to preserve and enhance their gardens and woodlands for the enjoyment of all people re- sulted in the generous donation of their home and property to Franklin County Metro Parks in 1972. To honor the memory of Grace and Mary In- nis, Metro Parks opened the 2.8-acre Sisters’ Garden in 2002. Designed to celebrate the complexity of nature and the inquisitiveness of childhood, The Sisters’ Garden aspires “to nurture the nature of the child in everyone”. Inniswood Garden Society Inniswood Metro Gardens is a facility of the Franklin County Metro Parks. Operation and maintenance funds are provided by the District, however, continued growth and development are contingent upon gifts from private citizens and philanthropic organizations. The Inniswood Garden Society was created in 1984 to assist the Franklin County Metro Parks in the growth and development of Inniswood Met- ro Gardens in a manner that is consistent with the goals and philosophies of the park district. Additionally, the Inniswood Garden Society as- sists with the promotion of Inniswood by spon- soring horticultural programs for its members and the public. Society members receive an Inniswood Garden Society newsletter, a vote at the annual meet- ing and information on the activities and special events at Inniswood. Membership in the Society helps to assure the success of Inniswood and brings a deep sense of involvement in knowing that your membership is helping support this excellent horticultural facility. Your membership helps the Gardens grow! Inniswood Volunteers The purpose of the Inniswood Volunteer Program is to promote the development of Inniswood Metro Gardens. All funds raised through projects are used to operate and promote Inniswood and its educa- tional and volunteer programs. Membership is open to anyone wishing to volun- teer a minimum of 40 hours per year at Inniswood and willing to pay annual dues of $10.00. Member- ship in the Inniswood Garden Society is a benefit for volunteers who volunteer 40 hours or more per year at Inniswood. The volunteer training program, held each March, consists of four sessions, which prepare participants to perform various services at Inniswood. These services include garden tours and maintenance, interpretation and assistance in the library and educational programs. It also in- cludes a variety of special interest groups support- ing the Gardens’interest in fern propagation, theme gardens, container gardening, and wildflowers to name a few. Approximately 300 dedicated volunteers help the Inniswood staff conduct tours and programs, tend the gardens and participate in an array of activities. IVI sponsors the annual perennial plant sale the first weekend of May. All volunteers are encouraged to attend quarterly meetings held at Innis House that include a short business meeting and horticultural program. Learning and Appreciation Inniswood offers education in horticulture and the natural sciences for children and adults. Dramatic displays of natural and cultivated gardens, seasonal celebrations and a variety of programs provide a wealth of information and enjoyment. The sister’s former home is the site for education programs, a horticultural refer- ence collection and staff offices. The page’s success may be due to its eccentric posts, such as: “Most cacti are just looking for hugs.” WiLd Berry TrOpicAL Skittles Skittles Skittles Skittles S Ra spberry S Melo n Berr y Nutrition Facts Amount/Serving %DV* Amount/Serving %DV* Total Fat 2.5g 4% Total Carb 56g 19% Serv Size 1 Package (61.5g) Sat Fat 2.5g 13% Fiber 0g 0% Trans Fat 0g Sugars 45g Calories 250 Fat Cal 20 Cholest 0mg 0% Protein 0g Sodium 20mg 1% * Percent Daily Values (DV) are based on a 2,000 calorie diet.
