Archer’s modular drilling rig (MDR) solution is a breakthrough in its field; utilising an
innovative, modular state-of-the-art design. It offers operational flexibility and cost
efficiency unrivalled by any other modular offshore drilling rigs on the market.
The MDR package can be tailored to meet well-specific requirements and provide
operators with a cost efficient alternative to both mobile offshore drilling units (MODU) and
traditional platform drilling rigs on both existing and future installations.
Archer currently own and operate two units, Archer Emerald and Topaz respectively.

The VDD400 Series MDR is supplied with 2 x HPU modules as
standard.
The HPU Modules are Electro hydraulic and are rated for
operation within Zone 2 areas. Each HPU has a total of 6 x
hydraulic pumps located within that provide fluid power to the
Hoisting, Drilling, Pipehandling and utility systems on the basic
rig package.
Each HPU is identical and designed so that all operational
functions can be conducted via 1 x HPU, thus providing
redundancy.
Operations are generally conducted utilising both HPU units to
reduce load on HPU pumps. Operation via 1 x HPU will be at a
reduced speed / efficiency when power demands are high.

Statoil extends modular rig deal
Efficiency boost: Heimdal platform
06 January 2015 08:36GMT
Steve Marshall
28 September 2015 09:12 GMT
Statoil has extended its contract with Archer for use of modular drilling rig Archer Topaz
after achieving a significant efficiency gain in plug-and-abandonment work with the unit at
the Heimdal field off Norway.
The state-owned operator now intends to use the platform -based rig to drill a new production well at the North
Sea gas field, which has been shutdown, under the three-month extension to the charter that kicked off lastyear.
A Statoil spokesman told Upstream the time required for the 12-well P&A campaign atthe disused field had been
reduced by 50%,giving it the opportunityto use the rig for the production well that will start drilling in the fourth
quarter and has an estimated duration of90 days.
He said a sidetrack will be drilled in the eleventh hole to be plugged to tap warm gas from the field’s own
reservoir to facilitate accelerated start-up of the platform, which now serves as a processing hub for other fields
including Atla, Huldra,Skirne and Vale after Heimdal reached the end ofits producing life lastyear.
“This will increase recovery from the Heimdal field and also boostthe production efficiencyof the platform by
reducing downtime,” the spokesman said, adding the P&A efficiency gain was in line with Statoil’s so-called Step
(Statoil Technical Efficiency Programme) initiative
Heimdal's HMP1 drilling, production and accommodation platform is meanwhile being upgraded to serve as a
gas processing and distribution hub after Statoil secured a 20-year life extension for the facility from Norway’s
Petroleum Safety Authority to keep it operational until 2034.
Once the production well is drilled, the rig will then carry out plugging ofthe final 12th hole in the P&A programme
in the firsthalf of 2016 before the unit is demobilised for planned maintenance.
An Archer spokesman said plugging and abandonmentofthe 11 wells had been carried out55 days ahead of
schedule.
However, the drilling services contractor - backed by shipping and offshore billionaire John Fredriksen’s Seadrill -
has so far not lined up any further work for the Archer Topaz as contracts have dried up due to a marketslump.
Archer was earlier this year hit by the cancellation ofa $96 million deal for its other modular rig,Archer Emer ald,
by Talisman Sinopec EnergyUK that had intended to use it for drilling work starting in the first quarter of next
year on the Montrose Area redevelopmentscheme in the British sector.
The spokesman stated in an e-mail:“Both rigs are currently being actively marketed.”
The contractor is touting the modular rig conceptas a cost-efficientalternative to mobile offshore rigs and
traditional drilling platforms, stating its compactness reduces the platform size required, the size of the drilling
crew and associated construction costs.
