- True or False: Emily Dickinson was a devout churchgoer for the majority of her life.
- Dickinson was raised in a Puritan culture, though she only regularly attended religious services for a few years. At Mount Holyoke she was deemed among the worst, labeled un-savable. Religion and spirituality, however, were major themes in her work; many of the ideas she expresses would be viewed as blasphemous in her community--- this is perhaps a reason why she hid the majority of her work.

- ED briefly studied botany from a young age and helped tender the Homestead’s gardens. She found pleasure in the creation of an herbarium. - False: While it is true that from the age of forty until her death at 55, Dickinson was never declared to be mentally insane. Myths were essentially created by her brother’s mistress Mabel Loomis Todd and her brother’s wife, Susan Dickinson, who managed her letters after her death, likely as a way to stir up interest in Emily’s work. Todd promoted a “mad woman in the attic” image, driven to insanity by Susan, whereas Susan determined Dickinson’s work to be the result of unrequited love. These characterizations remained until they were questioned by the discovery, collection , and analysis of the 1000+ letters written over the course of her life. Many biographers do, however, consider her to have been agoraphobic…

- False: Very few of ED’s poems were published in her lifetime… Her verse was highly unconventional for the time (use of rhyme, odd punctuation and capitalization…). Her work was described as “spasmodic.” The scope of her work was unknown until after her death; her poems almost didn’t survive. On her deathbed she made her sister and made swear that they would burn her chest of ‘fascicles’ (informally bound poetry series), a promise that was not fulfilled.

- The question of epilipsy is one raised only recently by biographer Lyndall Gordon From NPR/ The Guardian: Gordon says that several of those unaltered poems offer clues about why Dickinson rarely left her home: She may have had epilepsy. Several of her poems touch on a handicap — and, Gordon says, certain lines within those poems indicate that Dickinson may have had spells. "I think that we have no way of knowing for certain," Gordon says. "But if it's true, it would explain everything. If there was this stigma associated with epilepsy, the best solution for her would have been for her to remain in what she called 'my father's house.' ... She was protected by her father and by her sister Lavinia. She had a comfortable room. She had the time and space to write poetry. If she had married, she would have had babies every year and many more domestic duties.“ "Her handicap or whatever we want to call it was connected with her visionary life. And that was an exultant life. She often suggests that she might have some handicap. She says in one of her poems 'My lost by sickness — Was it Loss? / Or that Etherial Gain — / One earns by measuring the Grave / Then — measuring the Sun.' She's being ambivalent and truthful about what she calls her sickness because she both suffers [and] she feels a certain kind of death, but at the same time, there are spiritual gains."
