Bishop John Mackey, the Ninth Bishop of Auckland from 1974-1983, passed away peacefully at the Little Sisters in Ponsonby at the age of 91. He had been forced to retire early due to migraines caused by a previous car accident. After falling and injuring his hip in December, his health deteriorated and he was transferred to the Little Sisters home last week where he expressed his desire to go to Heaven. His funeral arrangements include his body being received at the Cathedral on Friday with prayers and memories, lying in state over the weekend, and his Requiem mass on Monday when he will be interred at the Cathedral.
