THE WORLD’S 8 OLDEST RELIGIONS
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Hinduism’s teachings and
beliefs are expressed in a vast
textual tradition anchored to
the Veda (“Knowledge”), the
oldest core of Hindu religious
utterance, and organized
through the centuries
primarily by members of the
learned Brahmin class.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
India’s Social Classes
(Caste System)
Caste is an ancient
system of social
hierarchy based on one’s
birth that is tied to
concepts of purity and
social status.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
The Vedas
A. The Rig Veda
It is the oldest and principal of the
Vedas, a collection of 1028 hymns
composed in the 2nd millennium
BC in early Sanskrit. The first and
last books were created later than
the middle books. The Rigveda was
preserved orally before it was
written down about 300 BCE.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
The Vedas
A. The Rig Veda
The text is layered, consisting of
the Samhita, Brahmanas,
Aranyakas and Upanishads.
The Rigveda Samhita is the core
text and is a collection of 10
books (maṇḍalas) with 1,028
hymns (sūktas) in about 10,600
verses.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
The Vedas
A. The Rig Veda
In the eight books – Books 2
through 9 – that were
composed the earliest, the
hymns predominantly discuss
cosmology, rites, and rituals
and praise deities.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
The Vedas
A. The Rig Veda
The more recent books (Books 1
and 10) deal with philosophical
or speculative questions, virtues
such as dāna (charity) in society,
questions about the origin of the
universe and the nature of the
divine, and other metaphysical
issues in their hymns.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
The Vedas
B. The Yajur Veda
The Yajurveda (Sanskrit: यजुर्वेद,
yajurveda, from yajus meaning
"worship", and veda meaning
"knowledge") is the Veda
primarily of prose mantras for
worship rituals.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
The Vedas
B. The Yajur Veda
It is a compilation of ritual-
offering formulas that were
said by a priest while an
individual performed ritual
actions such as those before
the yajna fire.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
The Vedas
B. The Yajur Veda
Yajna (Sanskrit: यज्ञ,
romanized: yajña, lit.
'sacrifice, devotion, worship,
offering') refers in Hinduism to
any ritual done in front of a
sacred fire, often with
mantras.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
The Vedas
C. The Sama Veda
The Samaveda (Sanskrit:
सामर्वेद, romanized: sāmav
eda, from sāman "song"
and veda "knowledge"), is
the Veda of melodies and
chants.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
The Vedas
C. The Sama Veda
It is a liturgical text
which consists of 1,875
verses. All but 75 verses
have been taken from the
Rigveda.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
The Vedas
D. The Atharva Veda
It is the "knowledge
storehouse of atharvāṇas, the
procedures for everyday life".
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
The Vedas
D. The Atharva Veda
Atharvan is a legendary
Vedic sage (rishi) of
Hinduism, who along with
Angiras, is supposed to have
authored ("heard") the
Atharvaveda. He is also said
to have first instituted the
fire-sacrifice or yajna.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Gods
The Trimurti are the most
prominent deities of contemporary
Hinduism. This consists of
Brahma, the Creator, Vishnu, the
Preserver, and Shiva, the
Destroyer. Their feminine
counterparts are Saraswati, the
wife of Brahma, Lakshmi, the wife
of Vishnu, and Parvati (or Durga),
the wife of Shiva.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Beliefs
Hinduism embraces
many religious ideas.
For this reason, it’s
sometimes referred to as
a “way of life” or a
“family of religions,” as
opposed to a single,
organized religion.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Beliefs
Hindus believe in the
doctrines of samsara (the
continuous cycle of life,
death, and reincarnation)
and karma (the universal
law of cause and effect).
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Beliefs
1) Belief in a Trinitarian God:
Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva
(otherwise called the Trimurti)
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Beliefs
2) Belief in the Soul (called “Atma”)
Hinduism believes that each living
creature has a soul, and all these
souls are the parts of a Supreme
Soul called “Parmatma.” Hence,
each animal has the same soul
with human beings. Therefore, the
ultimate aim of human life is to be
one with the Parmatma. This state
is called Nirvana or Moksha.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Beliefs
2) Belief in the Soul (called “Atma”)
Before entering a human body,
the soul travels through 84
million species. After death, our
soul enters a new body
depending on our Karma of past
life. This process continues until
we become one with the
Supreme Soul.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Beliefs
Karma = the force generated by a
person's actions to perpetuate
transmigration and determine the
nature of the person's next
existence
Moksha = release from the cycle of
rebirth impelled by the law of
karma
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Beliefs
Nirvana = the final state of
existence that transcends suffering,
karma, and samsara and is sought
through the extinction of desire and
individual consciousness
Samsara = the indefinitely repeated
cycles of birth, misery, and death
caused by karma
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Beliefs
3) Belief in Karma
The good things we do are called
good Karma and the bad things
we do are called as bad Karma or
sin. Those who do bad Karma,
suffer in their present life as well
as their coming life until they get
punished for their bad Karma.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Beliefs
4) Belief in Reincarnation
Hindus believe that the soul is
immortal and death is that of the
body only. The soul changes the
body as we change our clothes
and is reborn again. It travels
from one body to another body
until it becomes one with the
Supreme Soul.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Beliefs
5) Belief in Multiple Paths to God
Hinduism does not believe in
only one path to reach God. You
can do it in multiple ways. That
is what makes Hinduism a
different religion.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Beliefs
6) Belief in “What we eat is what
we become.”
As told by Lord Krishna, we tend
to become what we eat. The food
is divided into three categories.
Krishna = the incarnation of
God Vishnu.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Beliefs
7) That “Parents, Teachers, and
Food are next to God.”
Parents give us birth, nurture
us, teach us values. Teachers
give us the knowledge to survive
in this world. Food is the thing
by which we all live.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Beliefs
8) In the Incarnation of Vishnu
Lord Vishnu has incarnated
himself 9 times so far. The 10th
reincarnation will come soon or
might have born. It will be called
“Kalki Avatar.”
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Beliefs
9) In Horoscope
Hindus believe that our destiny
is decided at the time of our
birth only. We can know what
would happen in a person’s life
by making his horoscope. Hindu
marriages are arranged by
matching the horoscopes of the
bride and groom.
HINDUISM ELEMENT
#1: Creed; What do Hindus believe?
Main Beliefs
10) That The World is an Illusion
What we see is not real. The
best example is the color of the
sky. The sky appears blue to our
eyes but actually, it is not. In
the same way, this world is
different than what it appears to
us.
