Market Overview

2.1 Background
 Egypt is the most populous country in the Middle East and the third most populous country in Africa. Fertility levels are the
main determinant of population growth.
 In 1965, Egypt became the first country in the Arab world to launch an official family planning program.
 Family planning in Egypt was supported by large international investments, particularly from the U.S. Agency for International
Development (USAID), which became the program’s largest foreign donor.
 Despite the program’s early establishment, political support was inconsistent and fertility remained high until the 1980s. In 2014,
Egypt’s Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) documented an increase in the total fertility rate (TFR) to 3.5, up from a low of
3.0 recorded by the 2008 EDHS, reversing a 25-year trend of fertility decline.
 Between 2008 and 2014 the level of contraceptive use dropped slightly, from 60% to 58%. The proportion of IUD users
declined from 36% to 30%, and the proportion of pill users increased from 12% to 16%.
 While all are considered effective modern methods, there is evidence that women using the pill and other short-acting
modern methods have shorter birth intervals, by choice or by contraceptive failure, compared to those using IUDs

2.2 Introduction
 Contraceptive methods have a range of benefits other than their primary purpose of
pregnancy prevention. Contraception reduces pregnancy-related morbidity and
mortality, reduces the risk of developing certain reproductive cancers, and can be
used to treat many menstrual related symptoms and disorders.
 11% of women (15-49 years) are pregnant or have had a live birth in Egypt.
 One fifth of non-first births were born within 24 months of a prior birth interval.
 Contraceptive prevalence rate is 59% and desired fertility among ever-married
women (15-49) is still at three children.
 The Strategic National Population Plan 2015-2030 in Egypt has called for
accelerated efforts to reduce the TFR to 2.4 births per woman by the year 2030. In
order to achieve this target, the family planning program must maintain good quality
of family planning service provision and ensure that attitudes favorable to the use
and acceptance of contraception are maintained. However, this target should be
viewed as ambitious, considering the rising cost of ensuring contraceptive security
