NSWB of VCU, modeled after Doctors Without Borders, strives to provide medical assistance worldwide to those affected by crises. In addition to international missions, NSWB fosters local support through initiatives like a mentorship program pairing experienced nurses with new members to help them adjust to the nursing field.
2010 retreat Breast Cancer Update
The Breast Cancer Update began in 1996 as an educational program organized by the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition to provide healthcare professionals and the public with information on the latest topics in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. It started as a panel discussion with regional experts and grew to include keynote speakers on a wide range of topics. Over the years, the Update has expanded from hosting 100 participants to 400, requiring larger venues. While initially planned by an education committee, today the Update Committee explores current issues and themes. Nationally recognized speakers have helped make the Update impactful for raising awareness of the Coalition's services and shaping its programs.

Over the last 22 years Anne Marie has worked on issues related to people in prison in Canada. Her work has been driven from a harm reduction and anti-oppression framework and has had a strong focus on women, street involved people and people living with HIV & HCV. Anne Marie has been working for PASAN (Prisoners’ HIV/AIDS Support Action Network), http://www.pasan.org/, for 19 years and has been their Executive Director for over 11 years.
Anne Marie has presented to the Canadian Human Rights Commission on Women in Prison, at workshops and forums on Criminalization of HIV Non-Discloser and on CBC Radio on Harm Reduction and HIV/AIDS. Anne Marie has a Masters Degree in Social Work and has also written many articles and opinion pieces on HIV/AIDS and prisons. She is the co-author of the study "Unlocking Our Futures: A National Study on Women, prisons, HIV and Hepatitis C (2003) and has worked on preserving the human rights of people in prison for many years. Anne Marie has serviced on the Board of Directors for HALCO (HIV/AIDS Legal Clinic of Ontario) and of APAA (Africans in Partnership Against AIDS).

Gary Kinsman is a long-time queer liberation, AIDS, anti-poverty and anti-capitalist activist. He has been involved in the AIDS Committee Of Toronto, AIDS ACTION NOW!, the Newfoundland AIDS Association the Valley AIDS Concern Group and is currently involved in the AIDS Activist History Project, http://www.aidsactivisthistory.ca/. He is the author of The Regulation of Desire, co-author (with Patrizia Gentile) of The Canadian War on Queer, and editor of Whose National Security?, and Sociology for Changing the World. He is also the author of "Managing AIDS Organizing" and "'Responsibility' as a strategy of governance: Regulating people with AIDS and Lesbians and Gay Men in Ontario." The Problems of Cancer
An estimated 12.7 million new cancer cases were diagnosed worldwide in 2008, with lung, female breast, colorectal and stomach cancers accounting for more than 40% of cases. Worldwide, an estimated 7.6 million deaths from cancer occurred in 2008, with lung, stomach, liver, colorectal and female breast cancers causing over half of cancer deaths. The Singapore Cancer Society provides cancer treatment subsidies, financial aid, hospice and home care services, transportation assistance, rehabilitation support, cancer screening, research, and public education to cancer patients.

Chase After a Cure (CAAC) was started in 2009 by Summerville, S.C., resident Whitney Ringler and her family after her son, Chase, was given a 30 percent chance of survival after being diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma, a cancer of the nerve tissue of the sympathetic nervous system. Chase survived this aggressive form of cancer and now his family works tirelessly on behalf of childhood cancer research.
CAAC raises awareness about childhood cancer, specifically neuroblastoma, and funds childhood cancer research at the Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital.
Cancer is the No. 1 cause of disease-related death among children. About 13,500 children between birth and age 19 are diagnosed with cancer each year. Just at the Medical University of South Carolina, about 70 children are diagnosed with pediatric cancer annually.
Compared to adult cancer, childhood cancers are rare. Even though childhood cancer incidence rates continue to increase slightly each year, they still represent less than 1 percent of all new cancer diagnoses. That means funding for childhood cancer research is limited. In particular, neuroblastoma – which has one of the lowest survival rates – receives very little attention because the population base with this form of cancer isn’t profitable enough for pharmaceutical companies to develop new treatments.

1) New research funded by Cancer Council NSW is investigating why overweight Australians have a higher risk of liver cancer and exploring potential treatments. The research is looking at the role of hormones like adiponectin and sugars in liver cancer development and progression.
2) This research is one of 16 projects receiving over $5.4 million in funding from Cancer Council NSW to support cancer research. The projects will run for three years and involve Australian and international research teams.
3) The research aims to find new ways to prevent and treat liver cancer in order to address rising obesity and liver cancer rates in Australia.

Chase After a Cure (CAAC) was started in 2009 by Summerville, S.C., resident Whitney Ringler and her family after her son, Chase, was given a 30 percent chance of survival after being diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma, a cancer of the nerve tissue of the sympathetic nervous system. Chase survived this aggressive form of cancer and now his family works tirelessly on behalf of childhood cancer research.
CAAC raises awareness about childhood cancer, specifically neuroblastoma, and funds childhood cancer research at the Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital.
Cancer is the No. 1 cause of disease-related death among children. About 13,500 children between birth and age 19 are diagnosed with cancer each year. Just at the Medical University of South Carolina, about 70 children are diagnosed with pediatric cancer annually.
Compared to adult cancer, childhood cancers are rare. Even though childhood cancer incidence rates continue to increase slightly each year, they still represent less than 1 percent of all new cancer diagnoses. That means funding for childhood cancer research is limited. In particular, neuroblastoma – which has one of the lowest survival rates – receives very little attention because the population base with this form of cancer isn’t profitable enough for pharmaceutical companies to develop new treatments.

1) New research funded by Cancer Council NSW is investigating why overweight Australians have a higher risk of liver cancer and exploring potential treatments. The research is looking at the role of hormones like adiponectin and sugars in liver cancer development and progression.
2) This research is one of 16 projects receiving over $5.4 million in funding from Cancer Council NSW to support cancer research. The projects will run for three years and involve Australian and international research teams.
3) The research aims to find new ways to prevent and treat liver cancer in order to address rising obesity and liver cancer rates in Australia.

The Society aims to conquer cancer through research, education, advocacy, and by empowering people to reduce their risk.

The best available, up-to-date information on all fishing and related vessels that appear on the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing vessel lists published by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related organisations. The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.
To date, the following regional organisations maintain or share lists of vessels that have been found to carry out or support IUU fishing within their own or adjacent convention areas and/or species of competence:
Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)
Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)
General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM)
Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)
International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)
Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)
Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO)
North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC)
North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC)
South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO)
South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO)
Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA)
Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)
The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.
