Effortless weight loss
1. Over 60% of Canadians are carrying more weight than they want or need. No one wants to be overweight,
yet in most regions of the western world two out of three of us are. And judging by the amount of money
and effort put in to weight loss - a billion dollar industry - it's not for lack of trying. It is due to trying to
achieve a goal with the wrong set of rules in a world that is set up to guarantee the opposite result.
I have seen people who claim that they are fat and loving it. Kudos to you, I guess. I believe excess
weight severely limits a person's experience of themselves and the world around them. You can't be
completely present and enjoying your life if you are trying to find an angle to stand in that makes you look
the least fat, or you can't wear the cute clothes you see in the stores, or you avoid anything that involves
a bikini or pass on adventures like rock climbing because your butt will look too big in a harness.
Of course, excess weight also goes far beyond appearances. It is a major risk factor for the laundry list of
current health epidemics - heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc. You can't carry excess fat and be healthy
and happy - no matter what you tell yourself.
The diet industry has a 95%+ failure rate. Despite this close to 0% success rate, we continue to pour
billions of dollars into the books, pills and programs that this industry puts out. The fact that Oprah - the
queen of dieting, who even has the convenience of a chef and personal trainer at her disposal - is once
again living large should be the final testament to the fact that dieting just does not work.
Why Dieting Can't Work
Dieting equals anything that restricts portions, calories, or nutrients. These are the three basic quotas
that the body uses to make sure its physical needs are being met. The body will not let itself be
short-changed. If any one of them is missing regularly - the body is going to eventually use guerrilla
tactics (i.e. hunger, cravings, bingeing, etc.) to make sure it gets them.
Portions
Stretch receptors in your stomach are an important part of regulating hunger and controlling appetite.
When you are trying to survive on sample-sized servings of foods your body will never get the signal that
it is full, leaving you feeling like you are always hungry.
Monitoring portion sizes tends to only be necessary for foods that need to be limited for health reasons
and for altered foods that have lost their built-in safety mechanisms of fiber and nutrients. And seriously,
who can eat just 10 potato chips?
Calories
Calories are simply the measure of energy available in a food.
Traditional dieting techniques tend to focus on calories as the be all and end all, but they are only part of
the picture. Many cultures consume more calories, yet weigh less than we do.
2. It's true that if you really go overboard on the calories you will end up with extra fuel that's going to get
stored around your derriere. But eating extra calories is dang near impossible when you are eating real
food.
If your basic energy requirements are not being met - i.e. you are attempting to survive on less calories
than you really need - your body will eventually demand that you make up the difference.
Nutrients
Calories are important - but it's what is in your calories that really counts. Vitamins, minerals and
phytochemicals are what makes everything tick. Without them nothing gets done.
I think the consumption of empty foods - i.e. foods that provide only calories (ex. oils, sugars, flours and
ironically most "diet" foods) - is the number one reason we have the weight issues we do today. When
your food is nutritionally empty you are constantly left wanting more, causing you to eat far more than you
need in a desperate attempt to fill the nutrient quota.
Most traditional diet programs and foods restrict all three variables, making the 95%+ failure rate seem
about right. These approaches just cannot be physiologically maintained. A lot of us beat ourselves up for
lacking the "willpower" to stop eating. But more often than not there is genuinely something missing in
your food and your body will keep sending you the signal to go back to the fridge until you find it.
