2. PROJECT PURPOSE
1- PROBLEM BACKGROUND
As social media sites continue to grow in popularity, it is our premise that technology is a vital
part in today’s student success equation. With the nature of the cyber world around us today,
there is growing concern on how it affects them. The internet is more than just a means of
seeking information. People discovered that the internet could be used to concern with other
people, whether for business or commercial purpose, make new friends, reawaken old friends
and long lost relatives. The emergence of social networking sites simplifies the whole process as
they are easier to use and navigate.
2- RESEARCH QUESTION
College students have great interest in social media. For the purpose of this study, social media
was defined as Facebook, WhatApp, YouTube, Blogs, Twitter, My space or LinkedIn. Although,
providing a detailed perspective on social media use among university students and
underscoring that such use can produce both positive and negative consequences, according to a
Nielsen Media Research study, in June 2010, almost 25 percent of students’ time on the Internet
is now spent on social networking websites.
3. RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
• To explore the advantages and disadvantages of students ‘use of social
networking for study
• To find out the positive or negative impact of using social networking sites
on college students
• To discover how frequent students, use social networking sites for
information
• To determine how social networking sites can be used for educational
purposes
• To know whether these sites are helping students in their learning process
4. PRIMARY HYPOTHESIS
As the topic for the research is the effect of social networking sites on college
students so the hypothesis would be-
H0- Time invested by students on social media is affecting their learning?
H1- Time invested by students on social media is not affecting their learning
Another hypothesis which could be taken into consideration is—
Ho- Social networking has positive impact on college students learning
H1- Social networking sites have negative impact on college students learning
5. QUESTIONNAIRE DESIGN
1-OVERVIEW
Do you use social network sites? Why?
How many social networking sites communities groups are you a member?
On average, how much time do you spend daily you been using social networking sites?
How long have you been using social networking site?
How does online networking affect your studies?
Do you think social networks are important?
Are you using social networking technology for learning in schools/ colleges?
Do you think privacy policies are effective in social networking sites
2- SAMPLE SIZE
We selected college students as the population. This population in the colleges is more than 500 college going
students. So we selected 40-50 students as the sample by applying random sampling method. This sample
covered all the faculties selecting a similar number of students.

7. INTERPRETATION
A low p value indicates that you can reject the null hypothesis as the p value (in anova
table) is than 0.5
So we will accept the alternate hypothesis
Conclusion: regression model is significant
HYPOTHESIS:
H0: Learning depends on time whether person using internet in studies depends on time
invested over internet
H1: Learning do not depends on time whether person using internet in studies depends
on time invested over internet
8. CONCLUSION AND LEARNING’S
RECOMMENDATIONS
Our research has revealed that college students were likely to be affected by social
media. Social media is attractive; it not only provides college students another world to
make friends, also provides a good way to release pressure. To some degree, it
absolutely affects the lives of college students including the grades. This research also
indicates that an approach is needed to better balance the relationship between social
media and academic study. Therefore, college students should think more about the
balancing equation of social media and academics.
