A small Greek IT company offers a unique product to the Muslim community.
The product is a SIM card which enables every mobile phone to provide the
Muslim community with information about their religious duties. The product has
been recognised and awarded as one of the best applications for mobile phones
in 2010. The Greek company is looking for mobile network operators willing to
offer this service through licence agreement.

image 1In an era of globalization, new and promising market segments often
arise. A Greek company has developed a product for the global Muslim
community, estimated to be 1.5 billion people, of which several hundred million
use GSM mobile phones. However, a great number have low-end phones, with
no GPS, mobile compass hardware or even J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro
Edition). The project, realized by the Greek company, proposes the instant
transformation of the most basic SIM mobile phone into a new one which helps
Muslim persons to perform their religious duties. The project leverages the
existing SIM hardware inside the handset. The service provided can be
supported by mobile advertising tools.
This SIM card project began as a technology experiment in early 2009, in an
effort to introduce functions found in Islamic smart-phones into entry level GSM
phones, using nothing more than the phones' SIM card. This meant that even an
entry level mobile phone could be instantly turned into a fully functioning Islamic
handset based on the SIM card and allow their users to receive, among several
things, reliable orientation directions towards Mecca, even if the mobile handset
is deprived of compass hardware or GPS. The phone can also inform the owner
with audible prayer alarms globally in a more effective way than any other
solution offered by the network operators. The product is extremely easy to use,
and working on practically every GSM handset in the market.
This service can reach the end-user by using a new SIM with this technology or
could be downloaded onto their SIM card wirelessly using an on-the-air service.
This project has already received a significant award as a new application in
2010.
Innovative Aspects:
By just using the SIM card, one can turn a basic mobile phone into a specialized
tool for the Muslim community. The product is extremely easy to use. Among the
requirements and opportunities, is the fact that a mobile network operator (MNO
or VMNO) provides the service and in this way can benefit from the service.
There are potentially millions of users to benefit from such an innovation.
