Edusim is a 3D virtual world platform built using Croquet/Cobalt software that allows lessons to be taught directly on an interactive whiteboard. It has been in development for 9 months with pilot tests involving over 50 students and 5 teachers. The software platform and 3D lessons are the core components, with a focus currently on biology and earth science lessons. Teacher training and support is provided to help educators learn to use and extend the virtual lessons.

DevOps practice in nonprofit and how we develop and deploy software to resource-constrained device Web and commercial space is overrated, there are many other computation that also make a good cause become possible. In this talk I will talk about how we work at nonprofit organization with distributed team consist of developer, volunteer, intern, leaders. This is taken from my background as volunteer in the team. Then we will have a biggest part of the talk discussing about how we employ docker to package our application to resource-constrained and low power device to be deploy in our field (remote area with limited electricity and internet). We create our own linux distro which has some tools embedded for Raspberry Pi. Infrastructure-as-code is somewhat unique in this arena. In this talk we will close our talk with some lesson learned that commercial space can learn from nonprofit like us. How we appreciate contribution accross project. How to attract people to automagically contribute. And many other stuffs. Hope you enjoy.

SUNY Purchase and SUNY Delhi have begun a shared services project, where Purchase College provide Mahara ePortfolios to Delhi faculty and students through their Moodle LMS, while Delhi provides OpenMeetings and Big Blue Button meeting services to Purchase faculty and students through their Moodle system. This presentation reports on our work so far, focusing on the web meetings integration. The DEEP solution is based on Docker containers packaging already all the tools needed to deploy and run the Deep Learning models in the most transparent way. No need to worry about compatibility problems. Everything has already been tested and encapsulated so that the user has a fully working model in just a few minutes. To make things even easier, we have developed an API allowing the user to interact with the model directly from the web browser.

Given at EDUCUASE ELI16 In 2012, Duke University's Center for Instructional Technology (CIT) began experimenting with MOOCs with an interest in both open education and campus impact. Today, faculty are increasingly interested in content mashups and technology integrations that go far beyond the average course site. Presenters share how CIT evaluates technology tools and platforms to meet faculty needs, maps the Duke learning technology ecosystem, and tests new technologies for fit. In this presentation I discuss the methods and applications used, the results of Canvas and Open edX testing (summer 2015) and an Open edX pilot (spring 2016), and the values shaping the ecosystem moving forward. OUTCOMES: -Compare learning ecosystems, needs, and aspirations among session participants -Identify strategies for visualizing a learning ecosystem -Assess methods and applications for evaluating technology platforms

Open Source and GitHub for Teaching with Software Development Projects

Experiences in using GitHub for collaborative software development in project seminars using and creating open source software. Authors: Daniel Nüst (d.nuest@52north.org, 52°North Initiative for Geospatial Open Source Software GmbH) Thomas Bartoschek (bartoschek@uni-muenster.de, Institute for Geoinformatics Münster) Open source software is particularly suitable for teaching and organisations like Teaching Open Source (http://teachingopensource.org) present actively advertise this. In this talk we want to present some practical benefits that open source programming and publishing software on an open online platform has for teaching project-oriented software engineering seminars at university level. In these courses students together develop a new system for a specific task in form of a group project. For project groups, we suggest to use an adjusted variant of Scrum for project management (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrum_%28software_development%29), git as source code management system (http://git-scm.com/), and GitHub as a collaboration platform (http://github.com/, https://education.github.com/). Thanks to GitHub’s collaboration models such as “fork & pull”, each student’s work, may they be in lines of code or contributions to a discussion, can be tracked. Students fulfil different tasks in a project setting: some develop, some spend their time issuing bugs or improving documentation. But for all of them GitHub allows to quantify contributions and set concrete goals, e.g. two pull requests created, one merged, and five issues written. GitHub also offers graphical overviews of project activities. The goal is of course not to expose the student but to create a transparent environment for evaluation and grading. Teachers can even weigh in on discussions and make suggestions on the same platform as the students. In our experience, students estimate very well their performance in comparison with their colleagues. However, using Scrum as a development model is challenging for them. We adopted the classic Scrum schedule and defined two week long sprints. Students sometimes quarrel with the role of supervising other students and delegating tasks among their peers. But in the end, the clear schedule and the focus on the iterative and communicative aspects of project management are a key to ensure success. Teachers should be ready to step in a Scrum masters and to support the product owners and must be open to adjust plans and expectations in the same way that the students have to. We think this approach can considerably increase quality of a course from both a teaching and a learning perspective.

This document is the proposal for the TRACKOER project that is supported by the JISC Open Educational Resources Rapid Innovation programme (OERRI). In TRACKOER we are developing potential solutions to how to keep track of content in the open. We are looking both at ways to follow content as it moves from one server to another and then gets reused, and at how to capture other changes that people may make with cut and paste editing. The rationale for the project is to understand whether content gets reused but it also offers a model that could help track other activity around shared content. Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”. All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
