Are thousands of teachers leaving
their jobs because of low wages?
EducationVN- In order to retain teachers, not only should they increase their income
by reforming wages, but the educational environment in each school must also
change.
RELATED NEWS
● Quit, not a pink choice for all teachers
● Nearly 9,300 teachers quit in the school year 2022-2023
● Summer break, principals and teachers still have a lot of professional work to do
The wave of teachers leaving their jobs in recent years has not shown any signs
of "cooling down". According to statistics from the education industry database
system, in the 2021-2022 school year, 16,265 teachers quit their jobs and moved
out of the education industry. In the school year 2022 - 2023, the number of
teachers leaving is 9,295 people. [first]
This has had a significant impact on teaching and learning activities, especially
when the education sector is trying to implement the 2018 general education
program.
Are teachers leaving due to low wages?
One of the identified reasons, teachers leave a lot of work due to low income. This
is obvious, no one denies
(Artwork: Pham Linh)
In fact, if a teacher graduated from university, if he applied for a contract teaching job
at a school, then he was lucky enough to pass the civil service exam (called smooth
sailing), his salary per month would be more than 4 million dong.
However, this amount is not fully received, but quite a lot has to be deducted. In
addition to the fixed deductions such as union fees, party fees (if party members),
teachers have many donations on behalf of volunteers. Every few months, there will
be many deductions such as deduction of a day's salary for gratitude, study
promotion, natural disasters, for the poor...
Although the funds were donated at the school, at home, organizations and
neighborhoods continued to collect the above amounts. If you don't support with the
reason of deduction at school, at the end of the year in the neighborhood comment,
there will be the words "less participation in residential activities", but if you
contribute, only one job will support up to 2 times. .
Thus, the salary is more than 4 million VND/month, but teachers are employed less
than this number.
With teachers far from home, teachers with families, such meager salaries, the love of
the job sometimes can't win.
Many families, both husband and wife are teachers, have to choose the solution that
one person stays with the profession and the other quits to focus on the family
economy.
In addition to low income, the working environment also affects the decision
to quit the profession of teachers
By chance, I met an old colleague who was applying for a transfer. This colleague said:
"Miss! We can't stand the principal! This time, if I can't transfer schools, I'll quit."
Quit, not a pink choice For all Teachers
After that, the teacher said that when he went to school to teach, he was tired, but
seeing the principal was even more tired. In council meetings, almost teachers only
bowed their heads to listen to the teachings and criticisms of the leaders.
The plans the principal gave were almost imperative. Teachers who want to be safe
can only obey. If there are any teachers with conflicting opinions, this teacher will be
able to attend irregular hours, comment on the style of "picking up the hair", and the
records will also be criticized up and down.
There have been outspoken and outspoken teachers who had to leave the profession
because they themselves refused to compromise for students to go to class at all costs,
despite the principal's "green light". Determined to report dropouts rather than
transfers to legitimize educational effectiveness.
In some units, as a result, the school was demoted, and teachers were put in the
category of “opposing” by the principal. For many years like that, many teachers
could not understand and had to leave the profession.
Great pressure from parents and students
Small students, teachers always have to follow every step. There are children who
accidentally fall or are suddenly scratched by a friend, which is also tiring for parents.
A kindergarten teacher shared that a preschool child carelessly fell while playing. The
two teachers in charge of the class that day had to bow their heads to apologize to
their parents, then go to the house to apologize so as not to be inconvenienced.
Teacher Hung, a high school teacher in a southern province, told about his resignation
because he couldn't stand pressure from many sides.
Students in the class of the homeroom teacher, some of them are very lazy to study,
and when they are reminded by the teacher, they seek "revenge". Some children
deliberately said disrespectful words to anger teachers, others had their phones ready
to record as evidence.
Students cut out the parts that messed with the teacher, leaving only the parts where
the teacher got angry. In the image of the video, everyone can see the teacher slapping
his ears and swearing heavily at some students. When parents sue, the school and
superiors do not need to listen to the explanation (or know that the teacher is being
framed) nor dare to side with the teacher. The teacher was forced to apologize to the
students, apologize to the parents in the triumphant look of the students. Dissatisfied,
bored, he resigned.
Some other teachers have been sued by their parents all over the place for shouting at
their children in class. There are parents carrying sticks to school to hit
teachers…Many teachers choose the safest way for themselves is not to be strict with
students, to compromise with students' mistakes. Teachers who can't stand the
pressure are asked to leave the profession.
Many teachers think that, even though the salary is not enough to live, but with a
proper educational environment, they still try to stay with the profession. On the
other hand, the income is already low, the environment is full of pressure, which will
easily lead to dissatisfaction and surrender.
From the fact that, to retain teachers not only increase income by reforming wages,
but each school also needs to make adjustments.
Firstly, organize exams for the titles of principal and vice-principal, choose people
who are virtuous, talented and fair in their work to get a proper educational
environment.
Secondly, teachers need the sharing, understanding and educational cooperation
from parents instead of criticism that does not bring effective education to their
children.
