Qualitative research focuses on in-depth inquiry within a specific context through participants' perspectives rather than generalization. Samples tend to be small and purposive rather than representative as many potential participants do not want to participate. Different sampling techniques are used including intensity sampling to study different levels of a topic, homogeneous sampling of similar participants, criterion sampling of those meeting a characteristic, snowball sampling through participant referrals, and random purposive sampling of a subset of a larger purposive sample.
