                      junior Juliana Ivey

on her desk and watches the hands on
the clock slowly drag along, waiting for
the sound of salvation that signals the end
of the period. However, unlike most Paly
students suffering from self-inflicted sleep
deprivation, Ivey suffers from the real deal:
insomnia.
Ivey is one of many students who must
face and struggle with the daily battle of
sleep disorders. In a recent survey conducted
by Verde, results revealed that 74.7 percent of
the 379 Paly students polled are unsatisfied
with the average amount of sleep that they
receive per night, signaling a serious sleep
deprivation problem at Paly.
Ivey has suffered from mild insomnia
all of her life, but since entering high
school, her insomnia has become more
serious. Last year, after visiting numerous
doctors, Ivey discovered that she actually
has obstructive sleep apnea, a condition in
which her airway becomes blocked during
the night and she stops breathing. She also
found out that this was the cause of her
insomnia.
Palo Alto sleep specialist Allison Chan
has many pediatric patients who suffer, as
Ivey does, from obstructive sleep apnea.
     “Sleep apnea presents itself very
differently in children than in adults,” Chan
says. “In the pediatric population, usually it’s
the reason for a number of symptoms. With
teens and adults, they usually constantly
feel tired, and sometimes depressed.”
     In addition, obstructive sleep apnea
prevents Ivey from getting Delta Sleep,
the deepest stage of sleep, where real rest is TRYING TO STAY AWAKE A Verde survey found that Paly seniors receive an average

and are consistent with style selected.
     •  Story leads are concise, capture the
        reader s attention, and feature
important facts or an unusual angle.
     •  When writing a summary lead, each of
the 5 W s and H angle is analyzed for
        importance. Generally, the writer
begins the lead with the most

She wearily rests her head on her desk and watches the hands on the clock slowly drag along, waiting for the sound of salvation that signals the end of the period. However, unlike most Paly students suffering from self-inflicted sleep deprivation, Ivey suffers from the real deal: insomnia. Ivey is one of many students who must face and struggle with the daily battle of sleep disorders. In a recent survey conducted by Verde, results revealed that 74.7 percent of the 379 Paly students polled are unsatisfied with the average amount of sleep that they receive per night, signaling a serious sleep deprivation problem at Paly. Ivey has suffered from mild insomnia all of her life, but since entering high school, her insomnia has become more serious. Last year, after visiting numerous doctors, Ivey discovered that she actually has obstructive sleep apnea, a condition in which her airway becomes blocked during the night and she stops breathing. She also found out that this was the cause of her insomnia. Palo Alto sleep specialist Allison Chan has many pediatric patients who suffer, as Ivey does, from obstructive sleep apnea. “Sleep apnea presents itself very differently in children than in adults,” Chan says. “In the pediatric population, usually it’s the reason for a number of symptoms. With teens and adults, they usually constantly feel tired, and sometimes depressed.” In addition, obstructive sleep apnea prevents Ivey from getting Delta Sleep, the deepest stage of sleep, where real rest is TRYING TO STAY AWAKE A Verde survey found that Paly seniors receive an average gained.
