The state-of-the-art in image classification has skyrocketed thanks to the development of deep convolutional neural networks and increases in the amount of data and computing power available to train them. The top-5 error rate in the international ImageNet competition to predict which of 1000 classes an image belongs to has plummeted from 28% error in 2010 before deep learning to just 2.25% in 2017 (human level error is around 5%).
In addition to being able to classify objects in images (including not hotdogs), deep learning can be used to automatically generate captions for images, convert photos into paintings, detect cancer in pathology slide images, and help self-driving cars ‘see’.
The talk will give an overview of the cutting edge in the field and some of the core mathematical concepts behind the models. It will also include a short code-first tutorial to show how easy it is to get started using deep learning for computer vision in python…

Variable neighborhood Prediction of temporal collective profiles by Keun-Woo ...
Temporal collective profiles generated by mobile network users can be used to predict network usage, which in turn can be used to improve the performance of the network to meet user demands. This presentation will talk about a prediction method of temporal collective profiles which is suitable for online network management. Using weighted graph representation, the target sample is observed during a given period to determine a set of neighboring profiles that are considered to behave similarly enough. The prediction of the target profile is based on the weighted average of its neighbors, where the optimal number of neighbors are selected through a form of variable neighborhood search. This method is applied to two datasets, one provided by a mobile network service provider and the other from a Wi-Fi service provider. The proposed prediction method can conveniently characterize user behavior via graph representation, while outperforming existing prediction methods. Also, unlike existing methods that utilize categorization, it has a low computational complexity, which makes it suitable for online network analysis.

This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
